The awards "honor books of merit that celebrate New England and its culture," according to the New England Society. "Bunker Hill" chronicles the pivotal Boston battle that ignited the American Revolution. Philbrick won the 2000 National Book Award for non-fiction for "In the Heart of the Sea," about the whaleship Essex , struck by a whale in the South Pacific in 1819 It is currently in production as a major motion picture with Ron Howard as director. "Bunker Hill" is up against Jill Lepore's "Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin," and Kevin Cullen and Shelly Murphy's "Whitey Bulger: America's Most Wanted Gangster and the Manhunt that Brought Him to Justice." The winners will be announced in mid-March. Brown; historian Obed Macy; and journalist J. Ross Browne, among others. In my Introduction, I argue that these whaling narratives helped to further develop and perpetuate an already existing fantasy of masculine physical labor which imagines the United States’ working class men to be ideal, heroic Americans. This fantasy was so compelling and palpable that, surprisingly enough, the New England whalemen could be persistently claimed as characteristically and emblematically American, even though they worked on hierarchically-stratified floating factories, were frequently denied their Constitutional rights by maritime law, and hardly ever spent any time on American soil.

LIFE after the WRECK of the ESSEX Frank Vining Smith (1879- 1967) was a prolific artist from Massachusetts who specialized in marine painting. His impressionistic style made his paintings especially beautiful. This image depicts one of his works—a whaleship, like the Essex, sailing “Out of New Bedford.” Leaving Nantucket Island, in August of 1819, the Essex had a crew of 20 men and one fourteen-year-old boy. The ship’s captain was 29-year-old George Pollard, a Nantucket man, who had previously—and successfully—sailed on the Essex as First Mate. This was his first command aboard a whaling ship. Because so many whalers were sailing from Nantucket, by 1819, Pollard and the Essex’s owners had to find crew members who were from Cape Cod and the mainland. In Nantucket parlance, these off-island chaps were called “coofs.” There were numerous coofs aboard the Essex when she left the harbor on August 12, 1819. Viewed as outsiders, by native Natucketers, coofs were not part of the island’s “family.” Even so, working on a whaler—which, by 1819, was both a ship and a factory—African-American crewmen experienced the relative equality of shipboard life.

Morgan, as she sailed through the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off Provincetown. As he saw whales spouting all around him, Philbrick must have imagined himself a crewmember aboard the ill-fated Essex, the subject of his best-selling book and winner of the 2000 American National Book Award, “In the Heart of the Sea.” The Essex, a Nantucket whaling ship, was rammed and sunk by a sperm whale in the South Pacific in 1819. Crewmembers survived for more than 90 days aboard the ship’s tiny whaleboats, and their tale inspired Herman Melville to write “Moby Dick.” But fans of Philbrick’s book won’t have to sail into Cape Cod Bay aboard a 19th century bark to conjure up images of this epic story of survival at sea, as Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard will bring it to them on big screens across the country on Dec. 11. In advance of that, on Wednesday, December 2, Philbrick will give a talk and sign books at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. (Tickets are sold out.) Philbrick promised to provide the audience with a “glimpse behind the curtain,” at the making of the movie, for which he also served as a consultant.

George Pollard - Captain of the Essex George Pollard, Jr. was captain of the Essex when she was “stove by a whale” on November 20, 1820. From Nantucket, Pollard was 28 years old at the time he was given his first command (the Essex). At times when he had to make difficult decisions, he allowed his junior officers to influence him. At sea, the captain is in charge of the ship, and it is the captain who makes the decisions - even if those decisions are unpopular. Just a few days out of Nantucket, the Essex was damaged by a sudden squall. Pollard wanted to return to home base, for repairs. Owen Chase (the First Mate) and Matthew Joy (the Second Mate) talked him out of it. With a damaged ship and missing whaleboats (which the storm had swept away), the Essex crew continued on their whale-hunting journey. They never did replace the smaller boats with vessels of equal value. After the horrific events of November 20, 1820 - when the Essex was twice-rammed by a massive sperm whale - Pollard wanted his men to set-out for the nearby Society Islands (which include Tahiti and Bora Bora). It would have taken them about ten days to reach that destination. Instead of listening to their captain, Chase and Joy expressed a different opinion. They wanted to sail toward the coast of South America - a journey, given the small boats they had, of several months. Weighing the opinions of his officers against his own judgment, Pollard changed his mind. The men would do their best to reach the southern coast of South America.

Interviews with Nathaniel Philbrick The Last Stand 1. You’re known for books about the ocean and seafaring—why the departure? Long before I moved to Nantucket Island and began to write about the sea, I was a teenager in landlocked Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who was fascinated by Custer and the West. It was the movie “Little Big Man” that really did it for me, and from the moment I saw that film as a high school freshman, I was hooked. After finishing Mayflower in 2006, which ends with the horrifying Native-English conflict of King Philip’s War, I decided it was finally time to tackle the battle I’d been thinking about for more than thirty-five years. And besides, I was curious to compare the watery wilderness of the sea with that other wilderness, the West. After four years of research and writing, I’ve been struck by the remarkable continuities between our country’s expansion across the continent and the process by which American sailing vessels ventured out across the oceans of the world. The method by which the Nantucketers of In the Heart of the Sea hunted sperm whales was amazingly similar to how the Plains Indians hunted the buffalo; the clashes that occurred between the U.S. Navy’s Exploring Expedition of 1838-42 and the Native peoples of Fiji, which I chronicled in Sea of Glory, followed pretty much the same pattern as what unfolded between the Seventh Cavalry and Sitting Bull’s village of Lakota and Cheyenne. Instead of a departure, this book has felt more like a culmination.

In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival. Why you'll like it: Chilling. Rich. Well-paced. Meticulously researched. About the Author: Nathaniel Philbrick is a leading authority on the history of Nantucket. He is director of the Egan Institute of Maritime Studies and a research fellow at the Nantucket Historical Association. His other books include Away Off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People, 1602-1890 and Abram's Eyes: The Native American Legacy on Nantucket Island. He is a champion sailboat racer and lives in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Questions for Discussion 1. In 1820, Nantucket was a Quaker town. What do Quakers believe? This new musical, written and composed by Dave Malloy and directed by Rachel Chavkin, is an adaptation of Herman Melville’s classic American novel. After publishing Moby-Dick in 1851, Melville went from reputed author to one facing a great deal of criticism from the literary community. However, over 150 years later, his book is considered one of the great American novels. This production of Moby-Dick uplifts the genius of Melville’s novel while also bringing contemporary conversations to the story through music, dance, puppetry, and more.
