    RICHARD MARLES MP DEPUTY LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE MEMBER FOR CORIO AFL GRAND FINAL I was born in July 1967 at the Epworth Richmond Hospital. Despite the fact we lived in Geelong, Mum’s first baby, my sister Vic, was born in Melbourne and so that dictated the delivery for the rest of us. Three days later I was in the backseat headed down the freeway to Geelong. That connection between Richmond and Geelong was cemented ten weeks later when both teams played in the Grand Final. It was a game for the ages. Sam Newman, my boyhood hero famously had to sit the game out after a bruising clash in the first Semi-Final against Collingwood which saw him undergo partial removal of a kidney. Geelong was leading at the 18-minute mark of the final quarter before two late goals to Richmond saw them sneak home by 9 points. On 11 May 1974, I went to my first game. It was a profound experience that I still treasure. Geelong was taking on the reigning premiers Richmond at the MCG. Sam Newman played and picked up 14 possessions as the Cats fought their way to a ten-point victory. Yet it turned out to be a mere hiccup for the Tigers as they went back-to-back. Those who played in that 1974 game were the giants of my childhood. Along with Sam, there was David Clarke whose silky skills carried with them the feeling that he had been gifted divine power. The Nankervis brothers were the backbone of the team who, together, brought to bear a busy and reliable sense of industry.

Well, the answer to his question was a definite NO, especially after half time. What a match reversal ! Parade were rightly pretty pleased with their first quarter holding Ormond who had first use of the breeze. And, Parade followed this with a 6 goal second quarter, 5 of the goals coming from the boot of Parade forward Michael Skerritt, in just 17 minutes ! Centre half back Dale McCann, rover Frank Gleeson and forward Ted Flynn had all given Parade a good start . But after half-time it was a different story. The Ormond coach made a number of moves but possibly the most significant being Paul Sutherland to the forward line and Brad Nash on the ball - each kicked 3 goals Make the most of your money, in the second half and Paul Schuhkraft got 6 in the second half for a total of 8 for the day and a season tally of 87.

    Australian rules football: Australian Football League ‘Football brings together people from all cultural backgrounds and all walks of life. Everyone is equal – united by their love of the game’.1 ustralian football is a strange paradox – for a game that is played almost exclusively in one part of the globe it is able to transcend cultural barriers and ethnic divides and Abring communities together. Australian Football League (AFL) CEO Andrew Demetriou said: “The game invites us all to be involved. We estimate we have more than 20 nationalities represented on our current playing lists and we are certain that this will continue to rise into the future as we welcome more people from more communities to the AFL.”2 The fact is more people are flocking to participate in Australian football than any other football code in Australia. A total of 539,526 registered participants played football in 2005 (a 4.6 % rise from 2004), and membership of the 16 AFL clubs reached a record 506,509 in 2005, the first time the 500,000 mark has been surpassed.3 Spectator support at games is also at record highs – the attendance record for the Toyota AFL premiership season of 6.28 million was set in 2005, up six per cent on 2004 figures. In addition, total attendances for the Wizard Home Loans Cup, Toyota AFL premiership season and Toyota AFL finals series passed seven million for the first time.4 On average, 4.02 million people watched AFL matches on television in 2005 (up 1.2 per cent on 2004), and the 2005 AFL grand final between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles was the most-watched television program in Australia that year, with an average audience in the five mainland capital cities of 3.386 million people.5 Like the spectacular marks which signify the game – Australian football is flying high.
