The analysis begins with dramatic concerns, where musico-dramatic intensity analysis graphs show the relationship between music and drama, and how one may affect the interpretation of events in the other. These graphs also show hierarchical recursion in both music and drama. The focus of the analysis then switches to how Sondheim uses traditional accompaniment schemata, but also stretches the schemata into patterns that are distinctly of his voice; particularly in the use of the waltz in four, developing accompaniment, and emerging meter. Sondheim shows his harmonic voice in how he juxtaposes treble and bass lines, creating diagonal dissonances.

  • Blanton Presents First Touring Museum Exhibition of Works by Nina Katchadourian April 18, 2017
Nina Katchadourian Blanton presents first touring museum exhibition of works by Nina Katchadourian April 18, 2017 Installation view of Nina Katchadourian: Curiouser, March 12 – June 11, 2017. Courtesy of the Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin. Photo by Colin Doyle. AUSTIN, TX.- The Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin presents Nina Katchadourian: Curiouser. This mid-career survey explores approximately ten major bodies of work by celebrated Brooklyn-based artist Nina Katchadourian (b. 1968), including video, photography, sculpture, sound art, and a live performance. Nina Katchadourian: Curiouser is organized by Blanton curator of modern and contemporary art, Veronica Roberts, and is the first touring museum exhibition of Katchadourian’s work. Accompanying the exhibition is the first substantial catalogue devoted to the artist’s career, published in partnership with UT Press. Katchadourian’s practice is at once conceptually rigorous and alluringly accessible. Her work reveals the creative potential, to use the artist’s words, that “lurks within the mundane” and underscores the remarkable freedom and productivity that can come from working within limitations. Using ingenuity and humor, her work encourages us to reinvigorate our own sense of curiosity and creativity, and to see our everyday surroundings as a site of discovery and possibility. “It is an honor for the Blanton to present the work of one of the most inventive artists working today,” remarks Blanton Director Simone Wicha. “Katchadourian’s innovative practice provides insightful, and often witty, commentary on the world around us. We are thrilled to share Nina Katchadourian: Curiouser with Austin and the UT community and to tour the show nationally following its presentation at the Blanton, allowing others to discover Katchadourian’s unique artistic vision.” Katchadourian’s expansive practice takes place largely outside of her Brooklyn studio.

  • The Rhythm, Style, and Meaning of Jokes
The Rhythm, Style, and Meaning of Jokes Ralph G. Allen [The first Roger L. Stevens Address was delivered by Ralph G. Allen at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington DC, on April 23, 2000.] I want to tell you how I happen to be here today. Fellow Carole Brandt called me up and said, “Ralph, do you believe in free speech?” I said, “Of course I do.” She said, “Well, come down to Washington and give one.” As I slip into senescence my memory fades, so maybe it didn’t happen exactly like that, and in fact, of course, I am very honored to be giving the First Annual Roger L. Stevens Address because I spent the better part of four years working for Roger in this very building. I have known any number of famous men and women, but I have known only one great man, and that great man of course was Roger. On Christopher Wren’s tomb in St. Paul’s Cathedral is a Latin sentence that can be translated as follows, “If you want to see his monument, look around you.” That phrase should be etched into the marble of this building after Roger’s name. He was a great man, but bewildering. And since this is a lecture about jokes I can’t resist telling you about the frightful time that I had to tell Roger jokes for forty minutes. The producer of my second Broadway play, which failed of course, unfortunately was looking for money for a workshop of the property, and Roger, a potential backer, invited me to read the script to him.
