The April 3, 1836, journal entry became known as Section 110. Section 110 serves as a foundation for the current practices and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, involving temple building and temple ordinances. Thus it is important to understand the history of this Section from journal entry to canonization because it is an example of recovering revelation.

His parents were married in the temple, but now they have decided to get a divorce. Robert has always had a testimony of eternal families, but he wonders, “Who will I be sealed to in eternity?” As Robert seeks answers to his question, he finds a statement in an article by President Henry B. Eyring that helps bring him peace: “The Savior sent the Prophet Elijah to Joseph Smith to restore the keys of the priesthood (see D&C 110). With those keys came the sealing power, offering God’s greatest gift to His children—eternal life in families bound to- gether forever. “For some, that eternal joy may seem a faint or even a fading hope. Parents, children, brothers, and sisters may have made choices that seem to disqualify them from eternal life. You may even wonder whether you have yet been qualified through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. “A prophet of God once offered me counsel that gives me peace. I was worried that the choices of others might make it impossible for our family to be together forever. He said, ‘You are worrying about the wrong problem. You just live worthy of the celestial kingdom, and the family arrangements will be more wonderful than you can imagine.’ “To all of those whose personal experience or whose marriage and children—or absence thereof—cast a shadow over their hopes, I offer my witness: Heavenly Father knows and loves you as His spirit child.

Lesson Time The Hearts of the Children Lesson Summary: When Joseph Smith was 17 year old, he was visited by the angel Moroni. Moroni told Joseph Smith about an ancient record written on gold plates. The record contained the fullness of the gospel as delivered by the Savior to ancient inhabitants of the Americas. He also told Joseph that there were tools buried with the plates that were prepared to help him translate. Moroni also quoted scriptures and taught Joseph many things before he left. One of the scriptures Moroni quoted was from the book of Malachi, although Moroni quoted it slightly diﬀerently than it reads in our Bibles. The scripture said that Elijah the prophet would be sent to restore the priesthood and "plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers (Doctrine & Covenants 2:2)." The priesthood keys Elijah would restore are the sealing keys that allow us to be sealed with our families.

The Kirtland Temple Is Dedicated
The Kirtland Temple Lesson Is Dedicated 26 Purpose To help the children understand that priesthood keys giving authority to do missionary and temple work were restored in the Kirtland Temple. Preparation 1. Prayerfully study Doctrine and Covenants 109:1–16 (part of the dedicatory prayer given at the Kirtland Temple); Doctrine and Covenants 110; and the historical account given in this lesson. Then study the lesson and decide how you want to teach the children the scriptural and historical accounts. (See “Preparing Your Lessons,” pp. vi–vii, and “Teaching the Scriptural and Historical Accounts,” pp. vii–ix.) 2. Additional reading: The rest of Doctrine and Covenants 109 and Gospel Principles (31110), chapter 14. 3. Select the discussion questions and enrichment activities that will involve the children and best help them achieve the purpose of the lesson. 4. Materials needed: a. This priesthood holds the keys of binding and sealing on earth and in heaven of all the ordinances and principles pertaining to the salvation of man.” From the Life of Joseph Fielding Smith In 1902 Joseph Fielding Smith traveled to the state of Massachu- setts, where he was able to find information about his Smith ances- tors. While he was there, he met a genealogist named Sidney Perley. Mr. Perley told him, “It is my ambition, if I can do it, to search out the records of every individual who came to Essex County before the year 1700.” President Smith later recounted: “I said to him, ‘Mr. Perley, you have cut out for yourself a big work, haven’t you?’ He replied, ‘Yes, and I am afraid I’ll never finish it.’ Then I said to him, ‘Why are you doing this work?’ He thought a moment and looked rather puz- zled and then replied, ‘I do not know why, but I got started, and I cannot stop.’ I said, ‘I can tell you why you are doing this and why you cannot stop, but if I did, you would not believe me and would laugh at me.’ “‘Oh,’ he said, ‘I don’t know. We can bring the fulness of the blessings of the priesthood into our families. Elijah Restored the Fulness of the Power of the Priesthood When the angel Moroni first visited Joseph Smith in 1823, he promised that Elijah would come (see Joseph Smith —History 1:38-39). Elijah did come —to the Kirtland Temple in 1836 (see D&C 110:13-16). At this time he restored the keys that priesthood holders had to have before they could use the full power of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery had received the Melchizedek Priesthood in 1829, but until the coming of Elijah, they could not make its full blessings available to mankind. In the following statement, President Joseph Fielding Smith explained the authority that Elijah restored to the earth: "Elijah came to restore to the earth, by conferring on mortal prophets duly commissioned of the Lord, the fulness of the power of priesthood. This priesthood holds the keys of binding and sealing on earth and in heaven of all the ordinances and principles pertaining to the salvation of man, that they may thus become valid in the celestial kingdom of God. "It is by virtue of this authority that ordinances are performed in the temples for both the living and the dead. It is the power which unites for eternity husbands and wives, when they enter into marriage according to the eternal plan.

Sealing and the Book of Mormon
Seals, Symbols, and Sacred Texts: Sealing and the Book of Mormon Julie Frederick Second Nephi 27:7 tells us: “And it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall bring forth unto you the words of a book, and they shall be the words of them which have slumbered. And behold the book shall be sealed.” When we picture the gold plates we may think of Arnold Friberg’s painting of Moroni praying before burying the plates, or perhaps of one of several portrayals of Joseph Smith receiving the plates from Moroni. These images would perhaps remind us of Moroni’s statement that he would “seal up” the plates (Moroni 10:2). Second Nephi 27:6–22 offers a prophecy of the coming forth of this sealed book. I would like to discuss in some detail what 2 Nephi 27 says about that seal, to evaluate what type of seal can t Nephi’s description, and to consider if and how that seal has any meaning for readers of the text of the Book of Mormon today. As other papers in this volume make clear, 2 Nephi 27 is a prophecy written by Nephi in which he draws heavily on the text of Isaiah 29. In fact, most of Isaiah 29 is present in chapters 26 and 27 of Second Nephi, though Nephi adds signicantly to the text and rearranges some of the verses from Isaiah 29.1 Within this larger prophecy, 2 Nephi 27:6–22 contains Nephi’s specic prophecy of the coming forth of a book in the last days.
