Dharmapuri Region was created on 01.10.2012 as per the G.O.(Ms). No.131 Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (FS-2) Department, Dated: 02.08.2012, by establishing an Office of The Deputy Director of Fisheries (Regional), Dharmapuri.

Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem and Districts are part of Dharmapuri Region. Fishery management of these Districts are carried out by the Assistant Director of Fisheries, , Dharmapuri and Dam.

This Region is endowed with 14 Reservoirs (One Major, One Medium and Twelve Minor). Fish seed stocking and exploitation are undertaken by the fisheries Department.

There are also 2517 Small and Large Tanks in Dharmapuri Region. The Tanks are mainly rain water dependent. The tanks are maintained and managed by the Public works Department, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Forest Department .

The average annual rain fall of the four Districts are less than 1000 mm. The water is mainly used for irrigation purposes. In addition to that, Fish Culture and Capture are carried out by the respective Departments, by leasing out tanks, subject to availablity of Water.

Fixation of upset price for leasing and technical guidence is provided by the District Officials of the Fisheries Department. Though water availiablity is limited, Fisheries Department plays a major role in enhancing fish production by fish stocking and conserving the fishery resources.

Two Government Fish Seed Production Centers and Seven Fish Seed Rearing Centers are also functioning in this Region and under the control of the Fisheries Department.

The Dharmapuri district was given a separate district status on 02-10- 1965. Later Dharmapuri district was bifurcated into Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts on 09-02-2004. Dharmapuri is situated in western part of . The major towns in the district are , Morappur, Palacode, Karimangalam, and . The forest cover of the district is 30%.

RIVERS: Rivers Cauvery, Thenpennai, Sanathkumara and Thoppaiyar run through this district. River Cauvery runs through the district having a water spread length of around 90 Kms and forms a waterfall at Hogenakkal and joins Mettur Dam flowing from Ootamalai to Nagamari of Pennagaram block.

RESERVOIRS: The reservoirs of Dharmapuri district are Chinnar, Thumbalahalli, Nagavathi, Vaniyar, Thoppaiyar and Kesarikulihalla. They have a total water spread area of 831.10 ha.Out of six Reservoirs, Nagavathi,Vaniyar and Kesarikulihalla are leased out to the public, the remaining Thumbalahalli, Thoppaiyar and Chinnar Reservoirs are fully dried out.

FISHERIES The office of the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Dharmapuri was established in the year 1981-1982 under the drought prone area program vide G.O. Ms. No. 2037, Agriculture Department (DPAP) dated: 03.09.1981. The various sub-offices include Chinnar Fish Seed Farm, Hogenakkal Fish Seed Farm, Nagavathy, Thumbalahalli, Kesarikulihalla, Thoppaiyar and Vaniyar offices. Total water spread area of the district is 14,000 ha. During 2017-18 and 2018-19 fish production was 3411 tons and 525 tons respectively. Names of the two fish seed rearing centers: 1. Chinnar Fish Seed Farm at Panchapallichinnar, 2. Hogenakkal Fish Seed Farm at Hogenakkal, 3. Seed Rearing in cage at Thoppaiyar.

FISHERIES SCHEMES IMPLEMENTED IN THE DISTRICT 1. To increase fishing efforts, fishing nets and coracles were given to the members of Fishermen Cooperative Societies at a 50% subsidy. 2. Subsidies were given to the farmers to develop a Multi Purpose Farm Pond. The dimension of the ponds was 2500 m2 per pond. 3. A Skill Development Training program was conducted for fishermen and fish farmers. 4. Under the CSS- Blue Revolution 2016-17 scheme, a 50% subsidy was given to the farmers to create new fish culture ponds, renovation of existing ponds and purchase of fish feed and seed. 5. Fishermen free Housing scheme was implemented.
