Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds.

  • Opera 101 – an Introduction to Opera
OPERA 101 – AN INTRODUCTION TO OPERA A Syllabus for March-April 2021 Loving Opera Thursdays, March 11, 18, 25, and April 1; 10:00 - 11:30am Opera has always been intended as a glorious entertainment - one that beguiles all the senses. If you’ve ever been tempted to find out what opera’s attractions are, but have been put off by seemingly incomprehensible conventions, then this is the course for you. Focusing on the operas of the late 18th, the 19th, and the early 20th centuries, members will discover together those elements that continue to attract opera audiences who love a great tale well told, thrilling sound, the dance, passions on display, and the arts working together to move the heart and lift the spirit. I, Steve Dubrow ([email protected]), have been a devotee of opera since my childhood, attending, over the years, many hundreds of opera and vocal recital performances in the U.S. and Europe and maintaining an extensive CD collection focused on the classical vocal arts. Having graduated summa cum laude from Columbia, I did graduate work in Romance Languages and Literatures at Princeton and taught French at Brown University. A specialist in press and cultural affairs, I served for 25 years as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, worKing in Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Congo, Poland, Belgium, France, Austria, and – of course – in Washington, DC. I retired in 1998 as a member of the Senior Foreign Service. From 2000 until 2019, I taught world languages (French, Latin, Spanish, Italian) in high school in Montgomery County, MD, where I became a National Board Certified Teacher.

EFFECTS OF THE MET: LIVE IN HD ON THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF OPERA IN AMERICA by Anna K. Wigtil A THESIS Presented to the Faculty of The Graduate College at the University of Nebraska In Partial Fulfillment of Requirements For the Degree of Master of Music Major: Music Under the Supervision of Professor Pamela Starr Lincoln, Nebraska December, 2020 EFFECTS OF THE MET: LIVE IN HD ON THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF OPERA IN AMERICA Anna K. Wigtil, M.M. University of Nebraska, 2020 Advisor: Pamela Starr The Met: Live in HD satellite broadcasts of live opera performances began in 2006 and have since become popular with audiences around the world. While this could be an excellent avenue to democratize opera and make it available to new audiences, the available data indicates that most Live in HD viewers are already opera enthusiasts and have previously attended live opera performances. This thesis examines the history of the Metropolitan Opera’s broadcasting efforts, the demographics of American opera audiences, trends in Live in HD’s repertoire, and strategies to increase Live in HD’s appeal to a broader, more diverse audience that can revitalize opera’s popularity in the United States.
