MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings of the Year 2018 This
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2018 This is the fifteenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2017-November 2018). The 130 selections have come from 25 members of the team and 70 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources - I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, 8 have received two nominations: Mahler and Strauss with Sergiu Celibidache on the Munich Phil choral music by Pavel Chesnokov on Reference Recordings Shostakovich symphonies with Andris Nelsons on DG The Gluepot Connection from the Londinium Choir on Somm The John Adams Edition on the Berlin Phil’s own label Historic recordings of Carlo Zecchi on APR Pärt symphonies on ECM works for two pianos by Stravinsky on Hyperion Chandos was this year’s leading label with 11 nominations, significantly more than any other label. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR In this twelve month period, we published more than 2400 reviews. There is no easy or entirely satisfactory way of choosing one above all others as our Recording of the Year, but this year the choice was a little easier than usual. Pavel CHESNOKOV Teach Me Thy Statutes - PaTRAM Institute Male Choir/Vladimir Gorbik rec. 2016 REFERENCE RECORDINGS FR-727 SACD The most significant anniversary of 2018 was that of the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy, and while there were fine recordings of his music, none stood as deserving of this accolade as much as the choral works of Pavel Chesnokov. -

EN Bad Schussenried, 02-2021 Met Stars Live In
SONYA YONCHEVA Press Review – EN Bad Schussenried, 02-2021 Met Stars Live in Concert “Bad Schussenried. It is a ballroom of knowledge: the magnificently decorated and stuccoed library hall of the Premonstratensian monastery in Bad Schussenried. Very catholic, very rococo, wonderful bookcases and a ceiling fresco of the colorfully transfigured divine wisdom. Which is why here a few years ago the great writer Martin Walser presented his novel “Muttersohn” in an original reading for television. The “Swabian Spring” festival used to play here, and the concert by the legendary Guarneri Quartet from New York has never been forgotten. But now you can experience great opera there - which is no empty phrase and has a lot to do with New York. The Metropolitan Opera, which is closed during the pandemic, has launched the online series "Met Stars Live in Concert": concerts from special locations, broadcast worldwide as live stream, and in HD quality. At the beginning of February, for example, Anna Netrebko sang at the Vienna Riding School. And on Saturday, soprano Sonya Yoncheva appeared in the superbly illuminated library of the Schussenried monastery. The performance of the Bulgarian soprano can be watched for two weeks for 20 Dollars on the metopera.org website. The great aria “Ritorna vincitor!” From Aida, Rusalka's “Song to the Moon”, “Habanera” from Carmen - it's a one and a half hour best-of program. It is of course not very grand opera, because it is only accompanied by a piano (pianist: Julien Quentin). The Met itself makes the painful absence of the orchestra aware: During the stream, two scenes with Yoncheva from original productions are being faded in, Desdemona's Ave Maria and the duet Tosca / Scarpia. -

La Couleur Du Temps – the Colour of Time Salzburg Whitsun Festival 29 May – 1 June 2020
SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli La couleur du temps – The Colour of Time Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821 – 1910) Photo: Uli Weber - Decca Salzburg Whitsun Festival 29 May – 1 June 2020 (SF, 30 December 2019) The life of Pauline Viardot-Garcia – singer, musical ambassador of Europe, outstanding pianist and composer – is the focus of the 2020 programme of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. “The uncanny instinct Cecilia Bartoli has for the themes of our times is proven once again by her programme for the 2020 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which focuses on Pauline Viardot. Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds. -

OPERAFASHION: OLTRE LO STILE DEL CANTO (Operafashion.Blog)
OPERAFASHION: OLTRE LO STILE DEL CANTO (Operafashion.blog) AN UNUSUAL INTERVIEW WITH ELENA MOSUC Elena Mosuc is considered by international critics among the most expressive and versatile sopranos of Belcanto. She will be Mimì in “La Boheme” at Puccini Festival 2018 in the new production directed by Alfonso Signorini and the conduction of Alberto Veronesi. The Primadonna granted an interview to Operafashion with a lot of music, memories and fashion! What have been the key steps of your artistic career? ©Paulo César First of all, the year 1990, when I won the international singing competition ARD-Wettbewerb in Munich, which completely changed my life. I had been studying singing privately for 10 years and at that point I was already very well prepared from a vocal point of view. Winning this competition has opened the doors to a new beautiful world, which has offered me so much but has also asked a lot of work, a lot of preparation, many sacrifices. Let’s say that this was the key to my musical life. I haven’t got anything because I have beautiful blue eyes! Even though I was already very well prepared, I had to work to grow in my profession. What all my colleagues and I do is a job where you never stop working. As my dear maestro in Zurich – Ion Buzea, a great tenor with a great career – says, “the job of the singer continues even after retirement!”. Of course it is true for those who really want to achieve something in life and have great respect for the public and for the stage, which I consider a temple.
