Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr
Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr. Charu C Mishra Assoc. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times. -

Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies*
Asian Women March 2017, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 73-98 Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies* Premalatha Karupiah Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia 1 Abstract Scholars have argued that sound in films has not been given much theoretical attention. Without understanding the use of sound in films, a comprehensive knowledge of the meaning and ideology of movies is not possible. This paper explores how heroines’ voices are presented in Tamil movies and provides empirical evidence about gender inequality in the aural practices of Tamil movies. The data for this study came from a content analysis of 40 Tamil movies produced in India (1961–2012), 8 websites related to voice dubbing in Tamil movies, and 4 YouTube videos. The term “dubbed voice” refers to the practice of using a voice-actor or dubbing artist to deliver the dialogue while someone else acts in the movie. In Tamil movies, this trend has been common since the 1980s among female actors in lead roles but not among lead male actors. Even though the inability to speak Tamil is one of the reasons for this practice, it does not explain why female stars mostly use a dubbed voice. The male actors–including non-native speakers–often use their own voice. The use of a few select dubbing artists to lend their voices to heroines limits the type of female voices heard (from lead roles) in Tamil movies and narrowly defines the types of women’s voices that are associated with someone who is attractive or good. Therefore, Tamil movies are limiting not only the looks that are showcased on the screen but also the female voices heard in these movies. -
Who Is the Centre of the Movie Universe? Using Python and Networkx to Analyse the Social Network of Movie Stars
Who is the Centre of the Movie Universe? Using Python and NetworkX to Analyse the Social Network of Movie Stars Rhyd Lewis School of Mathematics, Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales. [email protected], http://www.rhydlewis.eu February 27, 2020 Abstract This paper provides the technical details of an article originally published in The Conversation in February 2020 [11]. The purpose is to use centrality measures to analyse the social network of movie stars and thereby identify the most “important” actors in the movie business. The analysis is presented in a step-by-step, tutorial- like fashion and makes use of the Python programming language together with the NetworkX library. It reveals that the most central actors in the network are those with lengthy acting careers, such as Christopher Lee, Nassar, Sukumari, Michael Caine, Om Puri, Jackie Chan, and Robert De Niro. We also present similar results for the movie releases of each decade. These indicate that the most central actors since the turn of the millennium include people like Angelina Jolie, Brahmanandam, Samuel L. Jackson, Nassar, and Ben Kingsley. 1 Introduction Social network analysis is a branch of data science that allows the investigation of social structures using networks and graph theory. It can help to reveal patterns in voting preferences, aid the understanding of how ideas spread, and even help to model the spread of diseases [7, 12, 14]. A social network is made up of a set of nodes (usually people) that have links, or edges between them that describe their relationships. In this article we analyse the social network formed by movie actors. -

Rajinikanth and the “Regional Blockbuster”
Rajinikanth and the “Regional Blockbuster” * S. V. Srinivas Introduction In the recent past, Tamil and Telugu films have managed to find aud- iences beyond the southern region and have also competed with the biggest Hindi films in Hindi cinema’s traditional markets in northern and western India. A subset of these films are big-budget spectaculars, which I would like to call regional blockbusters. This term flags the critical import- ance of developments in the south Indian region and film industries for the emergence of relatively new production and narrative regimes which raise interesting questions of value—of films as commodities and stars alike.1 In the pages that follow, I trace the evolution of this form to argue that it is symptomatic of a fundamental transformation of industrial- political logics of south Indian cinemas, whose most visible manifest- ations so far have been the star politician and fan clubs. I propose that Rajinikanth is a useful point of entry into the discussion of the regional blockbuster because he belongs to a small number of Indian superstars who were a part of the very problem that the blockbuster attempts to overcome and, at the same time, a valuable asset for it. By tracking the career of Rajinikanth, I propose to show how crucial this star in par- ticular, but also the south Indian star vehicle known as the “mass film,” is the condition of possibility for a form that may or may not use major stars. The paper is divided into two parts. The first elaborates on the blockbuster as a descriptive-analytical category and shows why it is use- fully seen not just as a global form but also a regional phenomenon, pred- icated on locally specific historical contingencies as well industrial-aes- thetic practices. -
