They would have been - and can still be - heard by anybody who watched it. Like many of the choices the attacker made, these songs were deliberately chosen as memetic references to 8chan culture. In the days after the attack, Moonshot CVE analysed views of the five tracks on YouTube. Using video analysis software, we were able to identify a dramatic spike in views that began in the immediate aftermath; the aggregate age and gender of those viewers who had liked, shared or commented on the videos; and the breakdown of the countries in which those likes, comments and shares were performed. RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS’ TERRORISM Karolina Wojtasik1 ABSTRACT The article deals with three terrorist attacks of right-wing extremists: in Norway (2011), New Zealand (2019) and Germany (2019). First, the modus operandi of perpetrators was shown and the course of each attack was analyzed. It was indicated what tactics the attackers used and why it was or was not effective. Secondly, the ideological background and motivations of the perpetrators were shown. It was possible to analyze the manifestos that the perpetrators left, and thus their way of thinking, their ideologies, and the purposes of organizing the attacks. Thirdly, issues related to the publicizing of the attacks by the perpetrators were shown. The goal of the article is to show that radical ideology of right-wing extremists (expressed in manifestos) leads to tragedies. In analyzed cases radical appointment of the perpetrators caused three deadly attacks. The article shows that the radical actions are preceded by radical speech, expressions, manifestos. We are engaged in policy development across hate crime & vilification laws, online safety, disinformation and democracy. Through using a combination of media, law, research, and direct engagement with decision making parties such as government and digital platforms, we are in a constant process of generating and testing constructive proposals. We also test existing civil and criminal laws to push back against the mainstreaming of hate, and examine whether those laws are fit for purpose. Most recently, we are finalising significant research into how anti-Muslim dehumanising discourse operates on Facebook and Twitter, and the assessment framework that could be used to competently and consistently assess hate actors. Recent events have only reaffirmed the centrality of Southeast European stability within the broader continental security paradigm. Both de- mocratization and socio-economic justice are intrinsic aspects of a larger progressive peace policy in the region, but so too are consistent threat assessments and efforts to prevent conflict before it erupts. Dialogue SOE aims to broaden the discourse on peace and stability in southeastern Europe and to counter the securitization of prevalent narratives by providing regular analysis that involves a comprehensive understanding of human security, including structural sources of conflict. Since it came to prominence during the 2014 Gamergate controversy,1 this loosely- defined, puzzling movement has achieved mainstream recognition and has been the subject of discussion by journalists and scholars alike. Alt-right was mainstreamed in 2016, and it is growing fast in the post-truth environment. Alt-right fights with stigmatisation that usually far-right movement face with the ironic and subtler language, rejection of the political correctness and use of jokes, sarcastic and nihilist approach and dark humour memes to spread their ideology. Alt-right members seem young, smart and exciting. They are gathering in board-based websites and/or forums that have little or no freedom of speech control. Lack of regulation and anonymity give them the opportunity to say what they mean, to spread the message and radicalise more. Alt-right online subculture was somewhat connected with rising of white supremacy’s violence globally in the past couple of years. Alt-right online subculture was especially compared with the four mass shootings or attempted mass shootings in the past six months – In Australia, Norway and the US. There is a danger that this trend of rising alt-right violence will continue. The public is not very- well informed about the alt-right community and its language, and it is essential to educate, especially youth, because of the danger of radicalisation.

Dissecting Myths of a Great Replacement A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Christchurch Terror Attack Manifesto by Kevin Hayder Shakir A Bachelor Thesis Communication Studies & Cultural Encounters Global Humanities at Roskilde University Number of Characters: 87.727 [email protected] June 2019 Abstract This paper analyses the manifesto “The Great Replacement – Towards a New Society We March Ever Forwards”, written by Brenton Tarrant, who carried out the anti-Muslim terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand the 15th of March 2019. It employs Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis along with Sara Ahmed’s writings of imagined communities as collective and emotional bodies. The paper reveals how the manifesto idealizes a “hard” “European” nation as a transnational, racial, cultural and political homogenous white, nation. It visualizes how the author of the manifesto, is constructed as a hero and martyr throughout the text. This paper discusses how the manifesto draws on online “chan” culture discourse and employs so-called “shitposting” tactics. It shows how the manifesto produces discourses that construct the perceived “Other” as a dehumanized and killable subject. This paper argues that the narratives of The Great Replacement manifesto have social implications, as seen with the synagogue attack the 27th of April in Poway, California, USA, which cloned the methods and language of the Christchurch terror attack. The paper implies that the struggle in the manifesto of whether the “European” community should be a “soft” or “hard” nation, is prevalent in the political landscape of several Global North countries. Yet, we lack tools and techniques to effectively track the propagation of information across the multiple diverse communities, and to capture and model the interplay and influence between them. Further- more, we lack a basic understanding of what the role and impact of some emerging communities and services on the Web information ecosystem are, and how such communities are exploited by bad actors (e.g., state-sponsored trolls) that spread false and weaponized information. In this thesis, we shed some light on the complexity and diversity of the information ecosystem on the Web by presenting a typology that includes the various types of false information, the involved actors as well as their possible motives. Then, we follow a data-driven cross-platform quantitative approach to analyze billions of posts from Twitter, Reddit, 4chan’s Politically Incorrect board (/pol/), and Gab, to shed light on: 1) how news and image-based memes travel from one Web community to another and how we can model and quantify the influence between the various Web communities; 2) characterizing the role of emerging Web communities and services on the information ecosystem, by studying Gab and two popular Web archiving services, namely the Wayback Machine and archive.is; and 3) how popular Web communities are exploited by state-sponsored actors for the purpose of spreading disinformation and sowing public discord.
