  • The Transformational Symbolism of the Skeleton As a Meaning of Rebirth
상징과모래놀이치료, 제6권 제1호 Journal of Symbols & Sandplay Therapy 2015, 12, Vol. 6, No. 1, 1-24. The Transformational Symbolism of the Skeleton as a Meaning of Rebirth Mee-ra Kowen*
In this study, the researcher considered the symbolic meanings of the skeleton in Korean folk tales, and analyzed how the skeleton has been developed into a symbol of rebirth in art, heritage, and religion. Also, the researcher interpreted the symbolic meaning of the skeleton, which appeared in the client’s sand-picture, through the lens of analytical psychology. Mankind, from ancient times, has connected the death of unconsciousness as a cooperator of salvation in moments of exhaustion, crisis, and desire in the conscious life. The appearance of the skeleton in tales and rituals represents not the end of life but rather coexistence with death, which cannot be detached from life. Through sandplay therapy, the researcher desired that the client solve the fear of meeting the unconsciousness that represents death, and encounter the archetypal meaning of the skeleton that exists in the client’s soul. Keywords : symbol, skeleton, transformation, rebirth, sandplay therapy * Corresponding Author: Mee-ra Kowen, Sandplay therapist & Psychotherapist, Mind Forest & Art Tree Counseling Center ([email protected]) - 1 - Journal of Symbols & Sandplay Therapy, Vol.6 No.1. Ⅰ. Introduction For modern men and women, who enjoy highly advanced conveniences, death is something to be dreaded. It is something they want to avoid. This may be due to their innate predisposition to fear death, and the struggle to escape it. The fact that death is inevitable and that no one can ever “experience” it beforehand exacerbates the fear.

This study was aimed at evaluating the plant’s effect against Naja nigricollis venom. Crude methanol extract (CME) and n-butanol fraction (NBF) of the extract were used. Mixtures of CME and minimum 0 lethal dose (LD99) of N. nigricollis venom were pre-incubated at 37 C for 15 minutes. Twenty mice were allocated into four equal groups. Group I was given LD99 of the venom only. Mice in groups II, III and IV were respectively given 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg of the extract incubated each with LD99 (9.70 mg/kg) of the venom. The same procedure was adopted using NBF. However, NBF was evaluated at 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg. All administrations were intraperitoneal. Animals were observed over 24 hours. All animals died in group I. For the CME treated groups, one death was recorded in group II while mice in groups III and IV all survived.

  • Cartoons/Comics
Delaware Winter Invitational, 2010 Cartoon and Comics packet by Mark Pellegrini, Rob Poirier, and Nick Lacock Tossups 1) Tim Curry provided the voice for this series' main antagonist, an ancient warrior- sorcerer who captured Atlantean souls in the Crystal of Souls. Each episode ended with the protagonist giving an educational fact pertaining to the events in the episode. The main character's pet iguana Thor was once devolved into a dinosaur by Dr. Zygote. The titular character, accompanied by bodyguards Norman and Virgil, travels through portals in time and space using his red cap. This show is, for ten points, what cartoon based on the Polly Pocket toy line? ANSWER: Mighty Max 2) In this character's original appearance he was killed by an evil snowman. This character has taken on many roles, including a tooth fairy, a sumo wrestler, a pimp, a member of Osama Bin Laden's harem, a Vietnamese prostitute named Ming Li, and General Robert E. Lee. This character is given to frequent bouts of racism, such as his insistence that Jews can't be pirates, gingers have no souls, and all black people know how to play the bass guitar. He once made chili out of Scott Tenorman's parents. He frequently sings that his friend's mom is a big fat bitch, and demands that people respect his "authoritah." This is, for ten points, what fat character on South Park? ANSWER: Eric Cartman (Accept either) 3) This comic has spawned a number of TV specials, featuring the titular character in the Rough, on the Town, in Paradise, and going to Hollywood.

  • Ezekiel Lesson 54 – Part 2 Who Is Like Our God (Part 2) (Or Is This Any Way to Run a Railroad?)
Ezekiel Lesson 54 – Part 2 Who Is Like Our God (Part 2) (or Is This Any Way to Run a Railroad?) True confessions: I love comic strips. In the midst of a crazy and busy life, I find time daily to read and keep up with eight different comic strips. There is a wonderful comic strip page on the Houston Chronicle website that comes up on my computer and gives me the latest comics each morning. If you do not follow comic strips, then you may not be aware of the current travails of Spiderman. Let me catch you up. Spiderman’s wife, Mary Jane (“MJ” to Spidey fans), was subjected to a spell by Loki! Now, you are no doubt saying, “Loki? But he was a Norse god of evil, the brother of Thor. What is Loki doing in a Spiderman Comic strip?” Well, Loki has been working on getting Thor out of Asgard (the Norse home of the gods in Norse mythology) so Loki can reign supreme. In the meantime, Odin, the father of both Thor and Loki, is engaged in “Odin sleep” and not able to reign. Before going into Odin sleep, Odin decreed that should anyone leave Asgard, they would not be allowed to return. This prompted Loki to cast a spell on MJ, making her look like Thor’s long lost love. Thor saw MJ through some otherworldly equivalent of a Hubble telescope, and then left Asgard to go get MJ! Of course, MJ is not really Thor’s lost love, so Spiderman would not let her go without a fight.

MacDonald’s Crystal Palace: Diamonds and Rubies, Coal and Salt in At the Back of the North Wind Lesley Willis Smith “What is your name, little boy?” [the voice] asked. “Diamond,” answered Diamond, under the bed-clothes. “What a funny name!” 1 And it is, in any ordinary sense. But Diamond’s name is as multi- faceted as the jewel itself, for the central figure inAt the Back of the North Wind is both a boy with a distinctive and developing character and a mandala, or universal symbol of total integration and wholeness2—at least in process, for, as MacDonald says in The Hope of the Gospel,” “we are not yet, we are only becoming.”3 George MacDonald believes that individuality must develop in the context of the collective, and that consciousness and the unconscious need to be integrated in both areas. The work of Carl Jung is illuminating with regard to both,4 and his fascination with alchemy is of particular interest as MacDonald sometimes appears, principally in At the Back of the North Wind, to be writing almost to an alchemical prescription (Jung is not, of course, concerned with the defunct “royal art” per se, but with what he describes in Psychology and Alchemy as “the signal connection between our modern psychology of the unconscious and alchemical symbolism”).5 The diamond is the lapis, or stone, “whose prism contains all the hues of the rainbow” 6 and is therefore the ultimate symbol of completeness; in Unspoken Sermons MacDonald even says that “every human being is like a facet cut in the great diamond” which is God himself.7 The depiction of Diamond in At the Back of the North Wind involves three layers of authorial input.
