Introduction Although may be covered within the Science curriculum, many young people with learning do not receive this lesson. It is important that students not only understand how human life begins but also about their own sexuality and that of others. These lesson plans include factual explanations of sexual intercourse alongside reasons to have , different relationships and . The ‘Sexual Intercourse’ section should be followed by ‘Sexual Behaviour.’

Where Do Babies Come From? An introduction to reproduction and sex. You will need pictures of parents and babies, and kittens, dogs and pups, and cubs etc  Look at pictures of parents and babies, cats and kittens, dogs and pups, lions and cubs etc  (Students could match up parent to as extra activity)  Ask group if they know how new life is born? How do people and animals reproduce?  Explain that it all started out with Sexual Intercourse.  Stress that sexual intercourse is nothing to be embarrassed about  Without sexual intercourse, new life would not be born  People and animals have to have sex in order to produce babies and kittens and puppies etc (move on to Human Reproduction lessons below)

What is Sex? There are different ways to explain Sexual Intercourse. These resources may be a good introduction.  All About Us – association CD-Rom . Can use in group but designed for individual use. Good section on ‘Sexual Relationships’ & ‘How Babies Are Made’  Jason’s Private World/ Kylie’s Private World/ You, Your Body and Sex DVD- all cover Sex and  Matt and Jessica Story- Talking Together about Sex and Relationships p62 Don’t forget to explain that sexual intercourse can happen between a man and a , or two men, or two women

HUMAN REPRODUCTION You will need body outlines or Bodyboards (male and )  Remind the group what they have learned from previous lesson- that people and animals need to have sexual intercourse in order to reproduce.  Now we are going to explore exactly what sexual intercourse is.

 Explain that a man produces and in his testicles  And every month a woman produces a tiny in her ovaries.  When a man puts his in to a woman’s , the man ejaculates, which means that the semen and sperm go up in to the woman’s vagina.  If the sperm and egg meet inside the woman’s vagina, they join together to make a foetus.  A foetus is what a baby is called before it is born.

Resources o Bodyboards plus Conception and , Contraception and Making Love packs

SEX IN MORE DETAIL There is a factual lesson plan in the Resource for Young People with Autism Spectrum Disorder ; (page 137) http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/resources/r/genericresource_tcm4587661.asp When a man and woman have a special relationship they may want to kiss, cuddle and have sex. Both people in the relationship must want to do this. Both people should be over 16 years old. The man and woman will talk about sex before they do it. This will make sure that they are both happy to have sex. The couple will find a place where it is okay to have sex. If they decide to have sex they will take their clothes off. This will be somewhere that only the two of them will be- a private place. Most people will choose their bedroom. When the couple are alone they will kiss and cuddle each other. (Some people will only want to kiss and cuddle. They will not want to do anything else. This is okay. They can enjoy kissing and cuddling. They do not have to have sex) If they decided they want to have sex they will take all their clothes off and kiss and cuddle. They might use their fingers to rub each other’s sexual organs (masturbate each other) They might kiss and lick each others sexual organs. This is called . The man’s penis becomes hard. He places it inside the woman’s vagina and gently moves it in and out. This creates friction which both the man and woman enjoy. After a while, this friction will usually cause the man to have an and ejaculate. It may also cause the woman to have an orgasm. You can have sex in lots of different positions, but one of the most common and intimate ways is for the man to lie on top of the woman, so that they can kiss and cuddle whilst having sex.

(Also a detailed explanation of sex between two men and two women) TERMINOLOGY  Recap on correct terminology for sexual parts of the body.  Explain to the group that this lesson is about the correct terminology for Sexual Intercourse.  What words do the group know?  Ask group and write on flipchart, or student come up and write on paper.  Agree which words are acceptable to use in the classroom.  Discuss which words you should use at home, with your partner etc

If their knowledge is quite good, can differentiate between vaginal, anal, oral sex.

 Could extend activity by looking at some slang words and asking if any are offensive?

SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS You will need pictures of individual people. Include people of different ages (e.g. elderly), ethnicity, etc Pictures can be copied from a resource (such as I Have The Right to Know picture cards) or cut out of magazines by teacher or students.

 Pair up the pictures/cards (or ask students to do this) in to couples (boyfriends/ girlfriends)  Look at the pairings  Do students think this couple may be having a sexual relationship?  Ask ‘’why?’ or ‘why not?’  Mix up pairings and include couples of the same sex, different ages, mixed race, mixed ability etc  Discuss answers, stressing different relationships exist. In particular that elderly people have sex, people with disabilities have sex, same sex couples exist etc

Resources  I Have The Right to Know book- picture cards of individuals at the back

WHY PEOPLE HAVE SEX Use the pairings from the pictures cards, or other pictures of couple from magazines  Think about different couple and different relationships  Can the students think of reasons why these people might decide to have sex?  Write up on flipchart (They love each other, it feels nice, they want to please each other…)  Explore if these are good reasons to have sex  Can students think of reasons not to have sex?  Stress that you should only have sex if you both want to.  Not everybody in a relationship will choose to have sex. This is OK and normal

Extend this activity with lesson plan below Resources  I Have The Right to Know book- picture cards of individuals at the back

SEX- YES OR NO?  What do the group think is a good reason to have/ not have sex?  Recap on last activity and their answers  Now read out these statements to the group, or write on to cards and hold up. Because they are over 16, they are not married, they fancy one another, they love one another, they have only been going out together for a short time, all their friends are having sex, they are in a private place, everyone on TV does it, they trust one another, they both want to have sex, they haven’t got a , their parents wouldn’t want them to  Students decide which is a ‘good reason’ and which is ‘not a good reason’  Discuss different opinions.  Stress that even people who love one another and people who are married might choose not to have sex. This is normal and OK.

 It is NOT OK to have sex; - With someone in your family, or somebody you are related to If you are under 16. This is against the Law. With someone else who is under 16. This is also against the Law. Unless you both want to

RECAP ON WHAT IS SEX?  Tell the students that a Martian has landed on Earth. (or teacher can pretend to be Martian).  The Martian has heard someone talking about sex- but what its it?  The Martian thinks that the students in Class…., ……School can tell him all about it.  Ask the students what they remember. Write a list  Can put in to list of questions like Who has sex? What happens during sex? Why do people have sex? Can anybody have sex?
