Racing boats with 15 to 25 rowers line up to a colourful start to compete under various categories for the Mahatma Gandhi Trophy. Started in 1973, the Uttara Malabar Boat Race was the only one of its kind in North Malabar until recently. The event is organized jointly by the a local committee comprising of Nileshwaram Municipality and Cheruvathur Panchayat. Local Over 15,000 RELEVANCE- NO. OF PEOPLE (Local / National / International) PARTICIPATED EVENTS/PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION (How festival is celebrated) Uthara Malabar Jalotsavam is a spectacular boat race conducted every year across the Thejaswini River. The one-day event scheduled from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm Inaugural Function hosts racing competitions under different categories. Neettilirakkal Unlike boat races in the southern districts of Kerala Chadangu usually comprising of Snake boats, here smaller Boat Race traditional boats called Churulan Vallangal are used. The oars used also sport a different shape from the ones used in southern boat races..
