A influência da temperatura sobre a duração do período de ovo-a-adulto e nas épocas de florescimento de plantas fornecedoras de alimento (néctar) sugere que esse seja um dos fatores que determinam a distribuição da abundância dos machos ao longo do gradiente altitudinal. Os resultados ressaltam a importância de se obter amostras estratificadas em função da altitude quando populações de Euglossini são estudadas, especialmente em localidades com grande variação topográfica. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Distribuição altitudinal, Euglossini, Floresta Atlântica ABSTRACT - Eufriesea violacea (Blanchard) males were sampled in a small-scale elevational gradient in Southeastern Brazil and showed sequential peaks of abundance from lowest (700 m) to highest (1,100 m) altitudes during the sampling period. The influence of the temperature on the length of the egg-to-adult period and flowering dates of plants producing food (nectar) suggests that it may be one of the factors determining the distribution of male abundance along the altitudinal gradient. -

In agroecosystems, pollination and control of crop pests provide benefits worth billions of dollars annually. Effective sampling and monitoring of these beneficial arthropods is essential for ensuring their short- and long-term viability and effectiveness. There are numerous methods available for sampling beneficial arthropods in a variety of habitats, and these methods can vary in efficiency and effectiveness. In this paper I review active and passive sampling methods for non-Apis bees and arthropod natural enemies of agricultural pests, including methods for sampling flying insects, arthropods on vegetation and in soil and litter environments, and estimation of predation and parasitism rates. Sample sizes, lethal sampling, and the potential usefulness of bycatch are also discussed. Introduction To sustainably use the Earth’s resources for our benefit, it is essential that we understand the ecology of human-altered systems and the organisms that inhabit them. Beneficial arthropods, such as pollinators of crops and natural enemies of arthropod pests and weeds, play important roles in the economic and ecological success of agroecosystems. -

In general, areas with more vegetation cover have greater abundance and diversity of these bees. This study investigated the effects of forest fragmentation on assemblages of the euglossine bees in the region of Rio Branco municipality, State of Acre, and surrounding areas. Ten forest fragments with varying sizes were selected for the study and were classified as urban or rural. The bees were sampled between December 2005 and August 2006. A total of 3,675 bees in 36 species and 4 genera were collected. In general abundance and richness of bees did not differ statistically between urban and rural fragments. The index of edge in fragments was a predictor of richness and diversity of bees. The connectivity estimated was also an adequate predictor for richness. Fragments with greater similarity in relation to their landscape structure were also more similar in relation to faunal composition. -

The orchid-bee faunas (Hymenoptera: Apidae) of two Atlantic Forest remnants in southern Bahia, eastern Brazil Nemésio, A.* Instituto de Biologia, Universidade Federal de Uberlândia – UFU, Rua Ceará, s/n, Campus Umuarama, CEP 38400-902, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil *e-mail: [email protected] Received March 2, 2012 – Accepted May 2, 2012 – Distributed May 31, 2013 (With 2 figures) Abstract The orchid-bee faunas of the ‘Parque Nacional do Pau Brasil’ (8,500 ha) and ‘RPPN Estação Veracel’ (6,000 ha), two Atlantic Forest remnants in the southern state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil, were surveyed. Seventeen chemical compounds were used as scent baits to attract orchid-bee males. Seven hundred and twelve males belonging to 20 species were actively collected with insect nets during 80 hours in February and April, 2009. Euglossa marianae Nemésio, 2011, the most sensitive orchid-bee species of the Atlantic Forest, was recorded at both preserves, though in low abundance. ‘RPPN Estação Veracel’ is the smallest forest patch where Euglossa marianae has ever been recorded. Engel Date approved: November 22, 2010 ii ABSTRACT Orchid bees (tribe Euglossini) are conspicuous members of the corbiculate bees owing to their metallic coloration, long labiomaxillary complex, and the fragrance-collecting behavior of the males, more prominently (but not restricted) from orchid flowers (hence the name of the group). They are the only corbiculate tribe that is exclusively Neotropical and without eusocial members. Of the five genera in the tribe, Euglossa Latreille is the most diverse with around 120 species. Taxonomic work on this genus has been linked historically to the noteworthy secondary sexual characters of the males, which combined with the other notable external features, served as a basis for the subgeneric classification commonly employed. The six subgenera Dasystilbe Dressler, Euglossa sensu stricto, Euglossella Moure, Glossura Cockerell, Glossurella Dressler and Glossuropoda Moure, although functional for the most part, showed some intergradations (especially the last three), and no phylogenetic evaluation of their validity has been produced. -

Nates-Parra: First record of Eufriesea bare González & Gaiani and notes on the distribution of three species of orchid bees pertaining to the genus Euglossa Latreille (Apidae: Euglossini) in Colombia Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. 31(120): 415-423, 2007. ISSN 0370-3908. Knowledge on the geographical distribution of orchid bee species in Colombia and most of the Neotropics depends on monitoring and sample methodologies implemented and facilities to access diverse natural regions. In addition, for research on distribution of species, the taxonomic impediment is a problem for the identification and confirmation of some species, although the tribe Euglossini presents a relatively well developed taxonomy. Herein is presented the first record of Eufriesea bare in Colombia, an orchid bee species known only the Venezuelan Amazonian region; as well as the distribution of three euglossine species of the genus Euglossa. Entre ellos, las abejas constituyen un eslabón esencial en la polinización de angiospermas que durante millones de años desarrollaron estrategias cada vez más específicas para atraerlas. De esta forma se establece una relación muy fuerte entre am- bos, planta-polinizador, y cuanto mayor es la especialización, tal como sucede en un gran número de especies de orquídeas y cactáceas entre otros grupos, ésta se torna más vulnerable ante cambios ambientales naturales o producidos por el hombre. De esta forma, el estudio de este tipo de interacciones resulta cada vez más importante en vista del incremento de áreas perturbadas o modificadas de manera antrópica en las cuales la fauna y flora queda expuesta a adaptarse a las nuevas condiciones o desaparecer. -

Three nests of Euglossa (Glossura) annectans Dressler, 1982 were obtained from trap nests at Serra do Japi, Jundiai, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The bees nested in bamboo cane (one nest) and in wooden-boxes (two nests). Sol italY (two cases) and pleometrotic (one case) foundations were observed. Two nests were re-used once by two females working in each of them. Re-using females that shared the nests were of the same generation and each built, provisioned and oviposited in her own cells, characterizing a communal association. The brood development period was related to climatic conditions. Natural enemies included Anthrax oedipus oedipus Fabricius, 1805 (Bombyliidae), Coelioxys sp. (Megachilidae) and Meli/lobia sp. (Eulophidae). KEY WORDS. Apidae, Euglossini, Euglossa annectans, nesting biology, nest re-use Very little is known about the nest structure and nesting habits of the Euglossini. Nests ofonly eight species of ELifriesea Cockerell, 1908, three species ofEulaema Lepeletier, 1841 and 21 species ofEuglossa Latreille, 1802 have been described; these figures correspond to 18.1 % ofthe species ofthree genera (GARO FALO 1994). The little information available on such aspects is due to the fact that the nests of these bees are not easily found (MICHENER 1974; DRESSLER 1982; KIMSEY 1987). Utilizing the trap nest technique, GAROFALO et al. (1993) obtained 16 nests of four species of Euglossa and 10 nests of Eufriesea auriceps (Friese, 1899).
