  • Landscape Evolution in Cebu, Central Philippines: the Impact of Sea Level, Social History, and Tectonism on Archaeological Landscapes
Landscape Evolution in Cebu, Central Philippines: The Impact of Sea Level, Social History, and Tectonism on Archaeological Landscapes JOHN A. PETERSON introduction Over seventy years ago, H. Otley Beyer (1947) sketched the archaeology of the Philippines. Occasional dramatic discoveries have been made since then, but there continue to be enormous gaps in settlement history, and some periods have gone entirely missing. The volume of archaeological investigations in the Philippines, espe- cially in the last decade, has been extensive and steady, although sites or terrains with long, continuous histories in Philippine landscapes have so far eluded discovery. This has frustrated chronology building in the archipelago (Table 1). Beyer’s vague and derivative chronology, divided into the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Iron or Metal Age, Porcelain Age, and Spanish periods, thus remains the best heuristic fit to the data. Physical changes in the landscape stemming from tectonism, sea level changes, and the aggradation and degradation of ground surfaces both destroy and preserve frag- ments of the human history of the landscape. Cultural choices and human history itself impact the landscape. Changes in subsistence patterns and foreign contact intro- duce new practices, with new effects on landscape formation and transformation. This article summarizes an effort to read the Visayan landscape in hopes of learning why archaeological landscapes from throughout more than 60,000 years of settlement in the Philippines have been so elusive (Fig. 1). Fred Eggan, the American anthropologist who sponsored and supported Philippines studies for several decades in the mid- twentieth century, recommended to his students to find a home research terrain that they could return to from time to time, always seeking lessons and learning from increasing familiarity.

  • A Preliminary Study of Ceiling Murals from Five Southeastern Cebu Churches
79 A Preliminary Study of Ceiling Murals from Five Southeastern Cebu Churches Reuben Ramas CAÑETE Associate Professor, Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman Abstract This is a preliminary study on the iconography, spatial distribution, and stylistic pattern of church ceiling painting based on case studies of five colonial-era Southeastern Cebu churches, done during the early decades of the 20th century. Each display comprehensive ceiling decoration programs executed by various Cebu-based painters, three of whom have dominated the available literature: Canuto Avila (Carcar and Dalaguete), Raymundo Francia (Sibonga and Argao), and Miguel Villareal (Boljoon). Utilizing concepts in iconography and visual culture, these ceiling paintings are analyzed and evaluated based on an understanding of Catholic catechism and the role that the church’s interiors played in the teachings of Church doctrine. There is also a need to explicate a preliminary realization of the conditions and contexts of artistic production and reception of these paintings, a process that was determined by each parish’s capacity to imagine, fund, and execute these elaborate visual decoration schemes. The paintings are integrated into a complex system of parochial art patronage, in which empowered parishioners, ambitious parish priests, and a visually literate public interact and intersect their common ideological and political aesthetic interests to fulfill a commonly felt, but differently interpreted project: to ennoble the town’s chief religious space with their expression of faith and secular power, as well as their indexical assertion of social and economic ascendancy during the American Colonial Period. Key words: southeastern Cebu, church ceiling murals, political economy, modernity, patron-client relations Volume 49:169 (2013) 7080 R.

  • 96 Some Pertinent Facts About Cebu and Its Leprosy Problem. CEBU Is
96 LEPROSY REVIEW. Some Pertinent Facts about Cebu and its Leprosy Problem. JOSE RODRIGUEZ, Geography. EBU is an elongated island barely 36 kilometres at Cits widest portion, with a length of 223 kilometres, and a total area of 4,836 square kilometres. The province comprises a considerable number of minor islands, of which only 14 have an area of one square mile or more. The main land lies between 123°-17'-34/1 and 124°-4'-4/1 East Longi tude, 9°-24'-46/1 and IP-17'-ll/l North Latitude. The highest peak is Mt. Uling, 1,013 metres, located at the central part of the island. From this peak, the land falls gradually on all sides to form the central plateau. The coastal plains are very narrow, widening only around the capital, Cebu, and at the towns of Tuburan and Bogo. The soil is porous and so thin that the coral subsoil crops out of the surface even in the most fertile regions. According to the 1918 census, there are 252,316 hectares of agricultural land of which only 51 per cent. were cultivated. The principal crops are corn, coconuts, sugar-cane, peanuts, bananas, pineapples, camotes, maguey, and kapok. The island is rich in minerals, the most important being coal and gold. The government cement plant at Naga turns out good cement, and the supply of the crude material is unlimited. Good fishingis to be had along the coast. The estimated population of Cebu province as at December 31st, 1929, was 994,365. Climate. There is one first-class meteorological station located at the capital, and five rain stations distributed throughout the province.
