FROM THE AREA MANAGER This note is written as most of the practical steps of a major endeavour are nearing completion; called Pathway for Growth it aims to bring the Royal British Legion and its work closer to the public. Over the rest of 2013 in particular, the implementation of the new structure, changes to both the volunteer organisation and welfare procedures will become more evident in our activities covering the Four Pillars: Welfare, Representation, Remembrance and Comradeship. The restructuring has seen the formation of the Northern Area; many of the administrative non membership support activities once conducted at offices in Kendal and Hebburn have been combined and centred on the current Area Office in Hebburn. Work has now commenced in identifying a permanent Area Office in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, although it is likely to be another year or so before a move can take place. Some familiar names are retiring whilst new posts are created. Mrs Una Bell has taken over as County Secretary for Cumberland and Westmorland County and as Membership Administrator for the Isle of Man. Also taking up new appointments are Sarah Fitzpatrick as Case Officer Cumbria South, Danielle Warwick as Case Officer for Cumbria North and Kerry Newham as Advice and Information Officer in Cumbria. Elaine Marston becomes Case Officer Tees Valley and Mary Douglas Advice and Information Officer Newcastle. Joining us in the near future will be Ian McGreal and Suzanne Guthrie-Gower, both Case Officers in Newcastle, Amy Clifford Case Officer County Durham and Rosi Thornton Advice and Information Officer Tees Valley. All the new welfare staff will require training in the new roles and new systems. Our voluntary Caseworkers will be offered a role change and training to suit their wishes. Whilst most of the changes mentioned are internal, the major change for members of the Armed Forces Community seeking our assistance from this Autumn will be the change in the method of contacting us; in the future this will be either via a free advice line phone number or on-line. All this takes place at a time when the need for our support is as great as ever, but these changes will enable us to provide a more rounded service to those who need our help, allowing them more involvement in the assistance that is provided, whilst working more closely with our partners. Change is a difficult time for those involved and we have many challenges ahead but I do believe that when all is in place we will certainly be able to provide much better support and guidance for our beneficiaries, ensuring that we maintain welfare provision at the heart of all our activities. Andrew HS Drake MBE

THE COUNTY CHAIRMAN This is our 92nd year delivering welfare help and support to our serving and ex-service family and their dependents; we say “family” for the simple reason that when serving within the armed forces, your fellow servicemen and women become your family and always stay your family whatever the future holds. The Royal British Legion is the largest service and ex-service welfare provider; we are very proud of what we do and what we achieve for our very big family, but its all thanks to you for your support by donating to the Poppy Appeal throughout the year. I have been the County Chairman for Cumberland and Westmorland County for the past 11 years and have enjoyed every minute representing our County throughout the country. I’ve met some really wonderfully generous people on my travels who don’t just give money but their precious time to help deliver our services to those in need. If you would like to help the Legion in any way, do contact us; we will be only too happy to have a chat to see how you could help – we are always looking for volunteers. Contact Telephone number 08457 725 725 – this is a free phone number if you are able to help in any way. In July this year, I had the great honour to meet our Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Her Royal Highness Princess Anne during their visit to Kendal – a great honour indeed. Ten Representatives of the Legion were presented to the Royal Party including Mr Neville Howard, the County President, County Vice Chairman Mr Eddy Dixon, the County Secretary Mr Tony Crane, Mrs Sarah Fitzpatrick our Welfare Officer and Mrs Nora Bowman and Mrs Thelma Richardson who represented the Women’s Section. Our group also included a Branch Chairman and two Poppy Appeal Organisers to ensure that all aspects of the Legion’s work in Cumbria were represented. It was truly a very great honour and a day never to forget. My County Committee Members are a great support as are all our Members within the County; They all work so hard for the Legion in so many ways and I take this opportunity to thank them for their services to me and the Legion. We also have our staff in the County Office at Kendal; these are the backbone of the welfare support within Cumbria and they are one of the biggest County Offices providing welfare within the Legion – well done to all of them. This is my last year as County Chairman as I’ve decided to retire in December 2013 because of an increasing workload in my civilian job. I must admit I will miss the work as County Chairman, but its time to let someone else take the reins. Many thanks once again for all the support over the years and here’s to another 92 years of brilliant service to our Serving and ex-Service Family. Phyll Boulton County Chairman Cumberland and Westmorland County TRBL

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION VERSUS THE STIGMA By Jack Paton, County Recruiting Officer

I address this article particularly to younger readers. For too many years the general consensus has been that The Royal British Legion is a group of Boer War veterans, sitting around a table, bragging about their exploits and setting the world to rights. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Legion has embraced the 21st century and is trying to get the message across that it is about now and today’s young people. There are men and women as young as 18 serving on operations overseas, some of whom will come home traumatised, others with severe injuries; the worst case scenario is the ones that don’t reach home alive. This is where the Royal British Legion comes into action; we are here for all service personnel and their families to help them or to give aid in some form or another. We can even send them on holiday if they meet the criteria. But let us remember one very important fact - the Royal British Legion, looks after all members of the armed forces, their predecessors and dependents, not just a select few. No matter where or when they served - during the Second World War, the Falklands, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Aden and the most recent conflicts in the Middle East, some may have not been on active duty, as long as they served, the Royal British Legion is there to help them and their families for as long as required. This is where the younger generation comes into play. Some of you will have family or friends who are serving at this moment in time. You can support us by spreading the word about the Royal British Legion and help us to get the message across so that we will always be in a position to give aid to those who need it most. You may be asking “what can I do?” There are many things you can do to help us; collect for the Poppy Appeal, organise an event taken from the list on page 17 or use your own ingenuity to raise funds. You might like to think about joining the Royal British Legion and having your own ideas put forward to change the way that things are done in future. We need people like you to assist during the Poppy Appeal and at other times. This is your chance to HELP US HELP THEM to enjoy life once again. How do I join? We have a straightforward system and you don’t have to have been in the forces to join. If you are between the ages of 12 and 16, all you have to do is fill out a small membership form with your name, address and pay a one- off fee of just £5 which will cover your membership until you can become a full member when you reach 17 years of age, join a local Branch and help us move forward to meet the future needs of the “Military Family”.

YOUTH MEMBERSHIP OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION By Myles Ripley, Senior Tutor, Sedbergh School

In this era of a much higher profile of the Armed Forces, it seems logical for the members of the Combined Cadet Force at Sedbergh School to affiliate to the Royal British Legion, especially in the 90th year of the Sedbergh Branch’s existence. Youth Membership is financially worthwhile, only costing a one-off £5 fee for membership up to the age of 17. It’s therefore our intention to “sign-up” all our Year 9 pupils as Youth Members of the Legion as soon as they join the CCF. Affiliation to a local branch is something we should have done years ago, since we are both involved in the work of the Services and we should both show solidarity and support for the work of all the Armed Services. Liaison with the Sedbergh Branch has been happening for some time in the shape of the Poppy Appeal collections being carried out in the School and our participation in the Remembrance Parade each year. Staff from the school are also members of the Legion and are actively involved in the work of the local RBL Branch. I would encourage leaders of various Youth Groups, Cadet Units and Legion Branches to follow our lead. CADET INVOLVEMENT IN THE POPPY APPEAL Cadets of all formations (Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and Air Cadets) take part in the Poppy Appeal every year. Their assistance in “showing the flag” for the Armed Forces is vital in a County where the serving element of our Armed Forces is thin on the ground. In all our major towns and the City of Carlisle, our Cadets Forces will be seen collecting in aid of the welfare of all the heroes and their families who served in such campaigns as Bosnia, The Falklands, Aden, Malaya, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. Please support our Cadet Forces who serve the Poppy Appeal so well.

CUMBRIA POPPY APPEAL SOME FACTS AND FIGURES “Of all the things I have ever volunteered to do, this has been the most rewarding” A quote from one of our new volunteers after they had taken part in the Poppy Appeal 2012. There are many opportunities to support our service and ex-service community here in Cumbria. The telephone lines in our Welfare office ‘never stop ringing’ for help! In 2012-13, £410,000 was raised in Cumbria and we are so grateful to all of our volunteers without whom the Poppy Appeal just would not happen. Collectively they oversee over 1400 volunteer collectors of all ages and backgrounds and from organisations such as the RBL Women’s Section, Cadet Units, Rotary, the WI, Lions and the Mother’s Union. As well as street and house to house collections there are over 1600 static collection points in retail outlets and shops, pubs and clubs, post offices, schools, garages/filling stations, hotels, banks and building societies, supermarkets, motorway services, one power station and one shipyard! We need YOUR help to continue to raise funds so that we can continue to answer as many of these requests for support as possible. GREAT CUMBRIAN POPPY RIDE 2012 The launch of the Poppy Appeal 2012 in Cumbria was supported by 71 members of the British Legion Riders Branch who visited 11 locations throughout Cumbria over the weekend of 27th and 28th October. Over 30 Councillors, Mayors, Leaders and MPs plus 3 brass bands to help launch the appeal along the way with many hundreds of people enjoying the spectacle along the route. There was full Press and Media coverage with features on ITV Border/TyneTees, whilst BBC Radio Cumbria included updates of progress throughout the weekend. Interviews were included in the news on the hour throughout the event and culminated in a major feature once again in Sally Moon’s Radio Cumbria Show on Sunday evening. Bay Digital Radio Station laid on a crew to cover the event and a number of Riders were interviewed. In addition there were over 20 reports and editorials in local newspapers. Carlisle provided the overnight stop, but not before a welcome from the Mayor of Carlisle, Eddie Stobart’s Truck “Poppy 90” and a Pipe Band in the city centre. It is estimated that the over 100 motorbikes arrived in Carlisle! In the evening English Heritage laid on a reception which saw the launch of the Poppy Logos and Messaging beamed onto Carlisle Castle. This continued throughout Remembrance tide from 6 - 11.30pm every evening and was seen by thousands of people every evening. Over £3000 was raised by the Rider’s endeavours over the weekend and credited to each location’s local Poppy Appeal collection. The event concluded in Bowness on Windermere, where Sir James Cropper, the RBL County Patron and Lord Lieutenant together with Mr Joe Stephenson leader of South Lakeland District Council and our own Area Manager Andrew Drake declared the Cumbria Poppy Appeal officially open! THE KARRIMOR CHALLENGE 2013 The Royal British Legion was chosen as the beneficiary charity for the 2013 Karrimor Trail which started and finished at Keswick on Sunday 9th June. On one of the hottest days of the year, Charles Byrne, RBL Director of Fundraising, and a team of 14 colleagues braved the heat to complete alongside more than 1,000 runners, including 2 Army teams, to run either 11km or 22km through the Cumbrian countryside. Team Legion and 100 other runners wore their Legion vests and t-shirts with pride to unite in support of the charity’s work helping the whole Armed Forces community past and present and their families. Every competitor was timed up and down a huge hill – going up was called ‘King of the Hill’ and coming down was the ‘Demon Descent’! One Legion runner ran the entire race carrying a flag which read ‘Lest We Forget’. Charles Byrne, Director Fundraising, completed the 11km distance in 58 minutes. He said afterwards, “The challenge was fantastic and it was great to see so many people supporting the Legion, including some very impressive Service personnel running with full kit. I’m very proud of Team Legion – everyone had a great time, despite the scorching heat – and we certainly want to be back again next year. Feedback from other runners was very positive – it was great to see everyone united in their support of our work helping the whole Armed Forces community.” POPPY SEEDS CAMPAIGN FOR CENTENARY COMMEMORATIONS The Legion is delighted to announce the Centenary Poppy Campaign is being rolled out nationally in partnership with B&Q. The national campaign will see the Legion asking the public and local authorities to purchase Flanders poppy seeds from B&Q to plant on their own land. The funds raised by the campaign will go towards the £1.6million the Legion spends each week on vital care and support to the Armed Forces community. The campaign, which will be officially launched in October 2013 in the hope that the UK awash with poppies during the centenary period in commemoration of all those who lost their lives in the First World War. We want to see members of the public making this campaign their own in their local communities, working in collaboration with local government, schools and community groups to engrain this campaign in the centenary commemorations.

WISHES COME TRUE FOR ARCTIC CONVOY VETERAN After a long period caring for his wife, Ronny Fisher ended up seriously ill in hospital after a routine operation went wrong. His daughter Carol promised him that if he pulled through, she would make any of his wishes come true. Fantastically, he pulled through and the family started work to fulfill his dreams. The first wish required him to apply for his first passport at the age of 88 so that he could relive his Navy Days in Italy and France. He had served as a Radar Operator. His first ship HMS Fox oversaw the Norwegian Straits seeking German intrusion around the Fair Isle. He then transferred to HMS Suffolk as part of the Arctic Convoy. His ship was the first to be fitted with radar and was the ship that located the Bismark and then called in HMS Hood to eventually sink the Bismark. Ronny also wanted to attend the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall and take part in the Cenotaph Parade in Whitehall. As he was a member of the British Legion, his local branch successfully applied for tickets for both events. Although he had previously carried the Branch Standard at the Festival of Remembrance, this time he would be wearing his white beret and his newly acquired Arctic Medal and would get VIP treatment with a front seat in a box with a fantastic view, two tiers above the Royal Box. An early start the next morning, with his daughter Carol ready to push his wheelchair, they assembled alongside 10,000 others in Horse Guards Parade, with other Arctic Convoy Medal holders ready for the parade. To great cheers and clapping, their turn came; “At the end of the parade back in Horse Guards, they were so proud at what they had achieved for Ronny” said Carol. Since then Ronny has found former colleagues through the HMS Suffolk Association and seen the laying up of the ship’s standard at the Naval Chapel at Chatham. Hopefully Ronny Fisher will be able take part in the Cenotaph Parade again in 2013 and we will be able to fulfil his wish to ravel on a London red double-decker bus and to visit the Imperial War Museum proudly wearing that white beret and his Arctic Star.

LEGION AND THE ARMY WALK SIDE-BY-SIDE IN CUMBRIA To raise awareness of the 2012 Poppy Appeal, Brampton (Cumbria) Branch Standard Bearer, 77 year old Brian Pease and local resident and serving officer Major Graeme Hynds RTR walked to every church and War Memorial in their collection area. Their journey started in a field on the edge of Brampton where in 1943 a Lancaster bomber of 50 Squadron RAF crashed after being diverted to RAF Crosby on Eden airfield (now Carlisle Airport) from Germany because of bad weather. Five crosses were placed in the field to commemorate the five airmen who lost their lives that day. The 35 mile route took Brian and Graeme through Lanercost Abbey to remote St Cuthbert’s in Nether Denton where they were met by the Church Warden who had prepared a beautiful display of commemoration in this small church. On to Gilsland and six other stopping points before arriving at Brampton’s own memorial: the Brampton and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital built in 1923, and where, in 1943, the survivors of the aforementioned Lancaster tragedy were treated. One young airman was hospitalised for several weeks and enjoyed the admiration and attention of the locals. Finally they reached Brampton’s Moot Hall where the ladies of the branch were organising their regular Poppy Appeal fundraising coffee morning. Major Hynds presented long service awards to several of our Poppy Collectors. Local support was found forthcoming throughout their walk by many people coming out of their houses to donate and Brian and Graeme’s walk raised an additional £143. Brampton Branch is most grateful to Major Hynds and his colleagues from the Carlisle Recruiting office for their support. This year, Brian (now promoted to Chairman!) aims to visit the all war graves in Brampton’s collection area. A list will be available soon on our Facebook page: The oldest and the youngest! www.facebook.com/BramptonBranchRoyalBritishLegion. Major Jim Penton, President of Brampton Branch, Should you wish a cross to be placed on your behalf, and Mena – collecting in Brampton, please contact Brian at [email protected] November 2012.
