Tyneside writer and stand-up comedian Jason Cook is moving house – but only after he and his girlfriend Claire achieved their prime search condition. It had to have a decent pub nearby. Pubs are important to the creator of BBC2 hit series Hebburn, from socialising in to developing situations around and perfecting lines. there can be up to 24 beers on the bar at one time, 18 of them British, and three ciders. “Ours is a really popular pub, people stand in line for a table,” says Alex. “We have 120 seats but can accommodate 200 for sports occasions and do 500-600 services a day. “Everyone is a Manchester United supporter – we like classic football and my idea of Manchester United is they are the traditional classic British football club. He’s even planning a British beer festival in October. But the basics remain rooted in international friendship – something that politicians of all shades should take to heart. When it comes to pubs and beer there are no such things as borders and language di culties. Yuri Shulakov says: “We like to go o the beaten track. 15.18 Shops in Haltwhistle are as local as local gets and its pubs are equally so. First impression of e Black Bull is beige upholstery throughout. Here is a pub with massive potential that could make more of its attributes. Granted, the four ales on show are impressive and our York Brewery Guzzler is damn  ne, but it wouldn’t take a lot to return it to its former award-winning ways. e food o er impresses though – a good choice of burgers and locally caught trout plus a cross-section of sandwiches. 17.08 Bardon Mill’s sole pub, e Bowes Hotel, is just a short walk from the station and it’s one to capture the imagination. Country pubs have to cater for every taste – they have to exist through rain, hail and shine while we townies can pick and choose depending on our mood. e Bowes has a good feel to it, it’s a friendly little bar and probably merits more than an hour’s sojourn. Geltsdale Cold Fell, the permanent ale, is bright, light and hoppily refreshing, while Hadrian Border Farne Island – today’s visitor – is surely one of the best pints in the region.
