Spencer Gulf Bioregion Coastline (median high water) Kms DEH MapID: 2008-952 Bioregions and South Australia’s marine parks network Eight biologically distinct regions have been identified off South Australia’s coastline. The State’s marine parks have been carefully designed to include parts of each bioregion and the various habitats within them. By including examples of the marine biodiversity typical of the Eyre, Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent Bioregions, the Southern Spencer Gulf Marine Park contributes to the marine parks network’s goal of representing and protecting examples of the full diversity of South Australia’s marine life. The great variety of marine life, habitats and natural processes typical of this region include the low energy north-facing coast of the foot of Yorke Peninsula, contrasting with the open, high energy coasts exposed to southerly winds and oceanic swells along the toe of Yorke Peninsula. Also featured are the habitats of Investigator Strait, with its deep waters and strong currents, and the distinctive sheltered northern coast of Kangaroo Island, backed by high cliffs and interspersed by small, sandy beaches. The 14 marine park Design Principles To guide the initial identification and final selection of South Australia’s multiple-use marine parks, 14 Design Principles – including seven Biophysical Principles and seven Community Principles – were defined and adopted by the Government. These Principles help ensure the marine parks network meets the objects of the Marine Parks Act 2007 as well as South Australia’s national and international obligations for marine protection. The Biophysical Design Principles guided the identification of proposed marine park sites. Email address: [email protected] SUMMARY Thirteen sites on southern Yorke Peninsula were surveyed in order to estimate the abundance of the western blue groper, Achoerodus gouldii. Juveniles (<20 cm) were sporadically common at shallow, moderately sheltered sites in creviced rocky areas. Sub-adults (20-60 cm) occurred at depths of 2-6 m and their abundance was correlated with that of juveniles, suggesting local recruitment of juveniles to adjacent reefs. Sub-adults > 30 cm were rare and adults (> 60 cm) even rarer. Anecdotal evidence from the 1960s to the 1980s was that adult groper were once common off headlands of SW Yorke Pen. Using the mean size of adult blue-throated wrasse as an index of fishing intensity, we found a correlation between this index and the mean size of sub-adults. The correlation implies that, despite formal protection of the blue groper, fishing mortality may be a contributing factor to the rarity of sub-adults in in-shore waters. Measures such as no-take reserves would give better protection to this species on open coasts.

Asset Sand Islands and Shoals Description A crest of sand which rises above water level from a broad marine sand bank, forming an unstable sand island - Troubridge Island - which changes shape and size over time. The island is about 5m high at high tide, and about 2 hectares in area when inundated, but considerable larger at low tide. The island is surrounded by shallow sand embankments (Troubridge Shoals). The oceanographic conditions have led to a long-term build-up of sand in some areas, including the creation of Troubridge Island, a sand island about 7km east of Sultana Point.

Impacts of implementing the draft management plans were assessed against a base case scenario of no management plans. The base case is not static, and requires an understanding of the existing trends in natural resource, economic and social conditions. There are external factors which influence both the ‘with management plan’ and the base case scenarios that were taken into consideration. Marine Park Profile The eastern coastline of the park is dominated by limestone cliff slopes and includes mostly sheltered, low rocky shores, bays and some sandy beaches. Linked offshore are large areas of low profile platform reef interspersed with sandy seafloor and seagrass. Particular features include the high current shoal grounds adjacent to Edithburgh, and the unique mobile sand spit of Troubridge Island. The southern coast bays contain large areas of seagrass scattered with sandy seafloor patches.

NORTHERN AND YORKE REGIONAL OILED WILDLIFE RESPONSE PLAN Chapter 9 – Northern and Yorke regional plan 130 History of this Document This regional plan was developed by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) and the Australian Marine Oil Spill Centre (AMOSC) to be consistent with the Western Australia (WA) Pilbara Regional Oiled Wildlife Response Plan which was produced jointly by the Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife (Parks and Wildlife) and AMOSC on behalf of the Petroleum Industry to set out the minimum standard for an OWR in state waters. The South Australian Oiled Wildlife Response Plan contains the general arrangements which apply across the state and seven chapters which comprise the local plans for each of the coastal regions. This chapter describe those local arrangements in the Northern and Yorke Peninsula Region. The Northern and Yorke Peninsula Regional Oiled Wildlife Response Plan was developed in consultation with Northern and Yorke Peninsula regional staff. The contribution and assistance of AMOSC and the Western Australian Government is both acknowledged and appreciated. The Plan was approved by the Northern and Yorke Peninsula Regional Director and adopted on 5 November 2018. Exercise and Review periods Exercising This plan will be exercised at least annually in accordance with South Australian Marine Oil Pollution Plans and petroleum titleholder oil pollution emergency plans, as required. Review This plan will be reviewed and updated by the Director, Northern and Yorke Peninsula, DEW and AMOSC initially within twelve months of release. Thereafter it will be reviewed following an incident or at least once every two years.
