Publicado por: Jaime Gómez Triana Recientemente una campaña de excavación arqueológica se propuso develar los secretos del antiguo sistema defensivo costero que protegió la ensenada y la desembocadura del río Jaruco, principal acceso fluvial a las poblaciones de la ciudad condal de San Juan de Jaruco y San Matías de Río Blanco «el Nuevo» o «de Los Almacenes». Este cauce era considerado la «llave» de las comunicaciones entre la capital y la parte centro oriental de la entonces provincia La Habana. Arqueólogos e investigadores del Gabinete de Arqueología de la Oficina del Historiador de La Habana, los Museos de Santa Cruz del Norte y Madruga, el Departamento de Patrimonio de la Dirección Provincial de Cultura de Mayabeque, juntamente con integrantes de los comités espeleológicos de Artemisa y Mayabeque, pertenecientes a la Sociedad Espeleológica de Cuba, realizaron entre el 31 de julio y el 13 de agosto pasados el primer Taller Nacional de Arqueología Militar San Dionisio, en el poblado Boca de Jaruco, Santa Cruz del Norte. El sistema defensivo San Dionisio se constituyó a partir de 1793, por iniciativa de un grupo de hacendados azucareros y con la participación del Real Consulado de Agricultura y Comercio, como respuesta a los frecuentes ataques procedentes de varias latitudes, los cuales interferían el cotidiano tráfico económico entre los diversos puntos de las zonas costeras habaneras y el principal puerto de la capital de la Isla.

Before looking at the opportunities for investments in Cuba in Real Estate we have to answer three questions: 1. Is the Cuban government actually promoting an economic opening some- what similar to the market opening in Vietnam? The answer is “yes” and the evidence is in the laws already approved, the “lineamientos”, the Party Congress, the lease of land for agricultural development, the commission working on the new laws and regulations, etc. 2. Are the people in Cuba in “tune” with the market opening and the changes taking place? The answer is “yes” at least for those that are part of capitalist Cuba. There are two Cubas: The Socialist Cuba of the Cuban peso, the subsidies, free health-care, free housing, etc., but with various small real income, and a Capitalist Cuba that has U.S. dollars and/or Cuban CUCs, employment by foreign entities, receiving remittances, that have profitable businesses, work in tourism, etc. Socialist Cuba is about 60% of the population and Capitalist Cuba about 40%. 3. Are foreign investors and Cubans living abroad in the United States and other countries in “tune” with the economic changes and opening of the Cuban market? The answer is “yes”. In the case of foreign investors this conclusion is based on meetings and interviews with representatives of the foreign companies proposing residential projects with golf and marinas. In the case of Cubans living abroad the facts are that about 400,000 will visit Cuba this year and last year about 2 billion U.S.

SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE The first number of the SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE series appeared in 1968. SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than the occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series distributes translations, bibliographies, indices, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. We also provide the most recent nomenclature for the species. Resumen Respaldo por 345 especímenes de herbario y más de 25 años de observaciones de campo, se ofrece por primera vez la distribución de Calyptrogyne plumeriana por provincias o departamentos para Cuba, Haití y República Dominicana, así como la distribución biogeográfica por subprovincias, sectores y distritos para Cuba y La Española. Introduction Calyptrogyne plumeriana is a mostly tall, solitary, pinnate-leaved palm occurring in Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Taxonomically, Calyptrogyne is in the Geonomatae tribe of the Arecoid subfamily of palms (Dransfield et al. 2008). Nine species from Mexico to Colombia and an additional three species from the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean comprise the genus. The three species from the Caribbean, of which C. plumeriana is one, were until recently considered to be in their own separate genus Calyptronoma. However, Loiseau et al. (2019) confirmed the previously hypothesized paraphyly of Calyptronoma and consequently advocated that it should be synonymized under Calyptrogyne. Serendipitously, others had already made the formal nomenclatural transfers of Calyptronoma to Calyptrogyne.
