Post-Game Notes No. 15 Notre Dame at Duke November 9, 2019 ● DL Julian Okwara (a product of North Carolina) and DL Khalid Kareem represented the Irish as captains for the opening coin toss. Notre Dame won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. ● With the win: ○ Notre Dame improves to 7-2 on the season, and 3-3 all-time vs. Duke. ○ Brian Kelly posts his first career win over the Blue Devils. ● With another scoreless first quarter from the Notre Dame defense (fourth of the season), the Irish are allowing just 3.78 points/game in the opening stanza this season. ● In the first quarter, the Irish held the Blue Devils to 26 yards of offense to Notre Dame’s 180. Notre Dame totaled eight first downs in the quarter while limiting Duke to just one. Duke did not post their second first down until halfway through the second quarter. ● In the first half, Notre Dame outgained Duke, 273-123. The Irish racked up 175 rushing yards to the Blue Devils’ 44. ● Through the end of the third quarter, the Irish defense limited Duke to just two third-down conversions of 13 opportunities. A four-year starter on the offensive line for the Crimson Tide, Jones has been selected as the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I football. A graduate student at Alabama working on his Master’s degree in accounting with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Jones is the first-ever four-time Capital One Academic All-America® selection. In 2009, he was named to the second team. He earned first team honors in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Jones has played all five positions on the offensive line for the Crimson Tide during his career. The winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding interior offensive lineman in 2011, he was Alabama’s starting left tackle as a junior. Alabama’s starter at right guard in 2009 and 2010, he has been the Crimson Tide’s starting offensive center this season, helping the Crimson Tide earn a spot in the BCS national championship game for the third time in the last four years. WHEREAS, Steve Davis was a beloved Oklahoma athlete, minister, broadcaster and entrepreneur who tragically passed from this life in a plane crash on March 17, 2013; and WHEREAS, Davis grew up in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, where he dreamed of playing football for the Oklahoma Sooners; and WHEREAS, after having been awarded the University of Oklahoma's last football scholarship of the season in 1971, Davis steadily improved until he earned the title of starting quarterback in 1973 and led the Sooners to their first undefeated season since 1956; and WHEREAS, in the two seasons that followed, Davis led the Sooners to national championships in 1974 and 1975; and finished his three seasons as starting quarterback with an extraordinary record of 32- 1-1; and WHEREAS, Davis' record established a new benchmark for starting quarterbacks at the University of Oklahoma, and stood until his total of 32 career wins was finally surpassed -

Georgia Southern University Athletics Werts Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List Award factors in on- and off-field excellence Football Posted: 7/24/2020 2:52:00 PM FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - The Wuerffel Trophy announced its Watch List today of 114 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The number is a record for the award since it first began releasing a watch list in 2015. Included on the list is Georgia Southern senior quarterback Shai Werts. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world. "It is so inspiring to see this record number of athletes being submitted for the award," said Wuerffel.
