TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 2017 Spa Friday
SPA SPEED BUT NO POLE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Friday 5 May 2017 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing set the fastest lap but missed out on pole position during an incident-packed qualifying for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the second round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). A red flag, traffic and other dramas entertained the fans during the 25-minute session, in which Stéphane Sarrazin recorded the quickest time. However, with the starting grid determined by the average of two drivers’ best laps, the #9 TS050 HYBRID crew of Stéphane, Nicolas Lapierre and Yuji Kunimoto will start third. In the #7 TS050 HYBRID, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi earned another front- row start and they will line up in second, alongside the pole position-winning Porsche #1. World Championship leaders Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima, in the #8 TS050 HYBRID, start from fourth after a qualifying session which saw the first two rows of the grid separated by less than a second. The drama started almost immediately when all cars, including Mike, Kazuki and Stéphane, were forced to abort their first flying laps due to a red flag, caused by an accident for an LMP2 car. When the action resumed, Stéphane delivered a very quick lap to take provisional pole position. After the driver changes, Kamui showed potential to put the #7 car into top spot but, with only a few metres to go on his first flying lap, the #4 ByKolles spun directly ahead. Kamui reacted well to avoid an impact but his lap time was ruined and, with used tyres, he was not able to take pole position with his next lap. -

The following seven shows were originally released over seven consecutive days, covering the history of the sport from the 1900s all the way up to the present day. This omnibus now gathers all the shows up together in one, for easy listening. Enjoy. History of F1 – 1900s to 1940s Welcome to Sidepodcast’s History of F1. This series will take us back to the beginning of the 20th century, when Formula 1 was all about honour, it was a gentleman’s sport, and it mostly involved getting to the end of the road without falling in a pothole. We’ll travel through time (not literally, of course), to see how Formula 1 became the corporate and money‐orientated sport that it is today. The F1 championship, and all the official records, date back to the 1950s, but the essence of F1 can be traced all the way back to the early 1900s. Back then it involved heavy cars. Drivers would be accompanied by a mechanic because reliability was such a problem, and the track was just a simple road in France. I say simple, but actually, the races were long and tough. The first proper motor race was called the Paris‐Bordeaux because… well, it went from Paris to Bordeaux. It was 1200km, and the winner achieved it in 48 hours. Average speeds were a rocketing 29.9 miles per hour. 1901 saw the first race with Grand Prix in the title, the French Grand Prix, taking place at Le Mans. -

How to stay in pole position: hire a boss who has worked on the floor for Strategy Magazine Amanda Goodall is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management at Cass Business School in London. If you had to make a guess about who will win the Japanese Grand Prix, how might you choose? In data spanning the entire 60 year history of Formula 1 Championships, my co- author, Ganna Pogrebna, and I have found that it has a lot to do with leadership. F1 teams that are led by former drivers or mechanics outperform those who are led by either managers or qualified engineers. We also find that when a team leader has 10 years of competitive driving experience, instead of zero years, there is a 16 per cent higher chance of their team performing well in a Grand Prix race. That is a big effect. Our research reveals that the best leaders are those who have previously ‘walked-the- walk’ – individuals who are experts in the core business of their organization. I will return to this later. The first notable point about this study is that it shows that leaders matter. Leaders matter! Isn’t this a no-brainer? So, leaders influence performance. This seems obvious, right? Maybe, but proving it is a lot harder. There are thousands of books on leadership. Most books are based on anecdote not evidence -- usually one ‘man’s’ (because it so often is) stoic story. Individual accounts of leadership may offer entertaining bed-time reading, but they can rarely if ever be generalized to other organizations, let alone other sectors. -
