TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 2017 Spa Friday SPA SPEED BUT NO POLE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Friday 5 May 2017 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing set the fastest lap but missed out on pole position during an incident-packed qualifying for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the second round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). A red flag, traffic and other dramas entertained the fans during the 25-minute session, in which Stéphane Sarrazin recorded the quickest time. However, with the starting grid determined by the average of two drivers’ best laps, the #9 TS050 HYBRID crew of Stéphane, Nicolas Lapierre and Yuji Kunimoto will start third. In the #7 TS050 HYBRID, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi earned another front- row start and they will line up in second, alongside the pole position-winning Porsche #1. World Championship leaders Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima, in the #8 TS050 HYBRID, start from fourth after a qualifying session which saw the first two rows of the grid separated by less than a second. The drama started almost immediately when all cars, including Mike, Kazuki and Stéphane, were forced to abort their first flying laps due to a red flag, caused by an accident for an LMP2 car. When the action resumed, Stéphane delivered a very quick lap to take provisional pole position. After the driver changes, Kamui showed potential to put the #7 car into top spot but, with only a few metres to go on his first flying lap, the #4 ByKolles spun directly ahead. Kamui reacted well to avoid an impact but his lap time was ruined and, with used tyres, he was not able to take pole position with his next lap. Nicolas took the wheel of the #9 targeting pole, but a track limits violation and time lost in traffic meant he earned third place at the chequered flag. Sébastien finished the session for the #8, and the Silverstone race winners complete an all-TOYOTA second row in fourth. Despite a disappointing result today, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is optimistic all three cars can compete for victory in Saturday’s race on a track where the team has finished on the podium twice before in WEC. TS050 HYBRID #7 (Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi) Free practice 3: 2nd (1min 55.238secs). 27 laps Qualifying: 2nd (1min 54.693secs average) Mike Conway (TS050 HYBRID #7) : “It’s good to start from the front row again. I was generally happy with my lap but at the end a Porsche went off and I lost a little time. We definitely had a shot at the pole but Kamui had traffic on all of his laps. I think we have a good race car and we can expect another close battle with Porsche.” Kamui Kobayashi (TS050 HYBRID #7) : “My first flying lap was good enough to get pole position I think because it was similar to Mike’s lap. But someone spun right in front of me. It’s a pity but starting second is okay and the car felt pretty strong. We didn’t get the luck today but the target is still to win the race tomorrow.” TS050 HYBRID #8 (Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson, Kazuki Nakajima) Free practice 3: 1st (1min 55.233secs). 27 laps Qualifying: 4th (1min 54.907secs average) Sébastien Buemi (TS050 HYBRID #8) : “I did what I could but to be honest we cannot be satisfied with our qualifying. The car felt okay but I’m not happy with the lap times so we will try to improve for the race. I am happy for car #9 to set the fastest lap, they have done a great job this week and Stéphane’s lap was brilliant.” Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 HYBRID #8) : “It was a difficult qualifying for our car. We just didn’t quite have the speed so it wasn’t what we hoped for. We need to see what we can do for the race. Starting from fourth we still have plenty of chance for the race if we can find some improvements.” TS050 HYBRID #9 (Stéphane Sarrazin, Yuji Kunimoto, Nicolas Lapierre) Free practice 3: 3rd (1min 55.448secs). 28 laps Qualifying: 3rd (1min 54.701secs average) Stéphane Sarrazin (TS050 HYBRID #9) : “We had an amazing car today, it was really flying and I am sure we will have a good car also for the race. I haven’t done a qualifying session since last year so I put myself under a bit of pressure. I did my maximum and it was a quick lap; I really enjoyed it.” Nicolas Lapierre (TS050 HYBRID #9) : “It was a messy qualifying for me which is a pity because Stéphane did a fantastic lap. We had a good strategy at the beginning but I had some traffic and it wasn’t a great qualifying. In the end we are third which is not bad and we learned a bit for the race, so we are looking forward to that now.” Free practice 3 results: 1st #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 1min 55.233secs 27 laps 2nd #7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +0.005secs 27 laps 3rd #9 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +0.215secs 28 laps 4th #1 Porsche (Jani/Lotterer/Tandy) +1.171secs 24 laps 5th #2 Porsche (Bernhard/Bamber/Hartley) +2.863secs 24 laps 6th #26 G-Drive (Rusinov/Thiriet/Lynn) +6.475secs 25 laps Qualifying results: 1st #1 Porsche (Jani/Lotterer/Tandy) 1min 54.097secs 2nd #7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +0.596secs 3rd #9 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +0.604secs 4th #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +0.810secs 5th #2 Porsche (Bernhard/Bamber/Hartley) +1.343secs 6th #26 G-Drive (Rusinov/Thiriet/Lynn) +7.161secs A German translation of this press release is available on www.RacingByTMG.com . REVISED DRIVER LINE-UP FOR NEW ERA AT TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Thursday 4 February 2016 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing today revealed the driver line-up which will lead it into a new era of World Endurance Championship competition. A completely new TS050 HYBRID car has been developed for this season, with significant changes to all areas, including monocoque, engine and hybrid system to meet the team’s ambitious performance targets. On the driver front, 2014 World Champions Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Buemi are again joined by Kazuki Nakajima for a second consecutive season together. In the other car, former TOYOTA Formula 1 racer Kamui Kobayashi steps up from test and reserve driver to a race seat for 2016, replacing the retired Alex Wurz. He will race alongside Stéphane Sarrazin and Mike Conway. Race numbers for the 2016 season will be revealed on 5 February by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, organisers of the WEC and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Kamui’s elevation to a race seat leaves a vacancy as test and reserve driver, which will be announced, along with full technical details of the TS050 HYBRID, at a launch event on 24 March at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. The new driver line-up was announced earlier today at a TOYOTA GAZOO Racing press conference in Tokyo, Japan, at which the team’s new TOYOTA GAZOO Racing identity was also revealed. As well as an updated logo, a 2015 show car displayed the new black, white and red livery which will be modified for the TS050 HYBRID.

***Updated to include quote from José María López*** TOYOTA GAZOO RACING WINS AT SILVERSTONE Sunday 16 April 2017 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing scored a dramatic victory in the 6 Hours of Silverstone after a thrilling opening round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). In a race defined by several rain showers, the #8 TS050 HYBRID of Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima earned victory inside the final 15 minutes in front of 50,200 spectators (weekend figure). As well as the usual winners’ trophies, the #8 crew also claimed the Royal Automobile Club International Tourist Trophy, first awarded in 1905 and won by motorsport legends such as Tazio Nuvolari, Graham Hill and Stirling Moss. The pole-sitting #7 TS050 HYBRID of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López set the fastest lap of the race but lost over an hour due to an accident and finished 23rd. José María visited the circuit medical centre and then travelled to hospital for a precautionary scan which confirmed he suffered no injuries. Although the race started in cool, dry conditions and the two TOYOTAs ran in first and second, the weather soon intervened; after 45 minutes a shower struck and light rain fell intermittently after that. Close to the second pit stops, the #7 suffered an anti-roll bar problem which created handling difficulties and caused Kamui to lose performance and drop to fourth. Anthony, now at the wheel of the #8, took over the lead and a battle with the #2 Porsche. But with two hours completed, the weather worsened and created a very challenging situation.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

  • TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 2017 Spa Preview
BELGIUM BECKONS FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Monday 1 May 2017 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will race with three TS050 HYBRID cars for the first time when the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) heads to Belgium for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps this weekend. Having won the first race of the year, at Silverstone last month, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is ready for one of its three home WEC events; the Spa circuit is located just 120km from the team’s headquarters in Cologne, Germany. Spa also represents the final competitive action before the highlight of the WEC season; the Le Mans 24 Hours on 17-18 June. With that in mind, the team will utilise both of its permitted 2017 aerodynamic configurations. The #7 crew of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López will use the high-downforce TS050 HYBRID with which they earned pole position at Silverstone. Their race ended when José María crashed in damp conditions. After a period of rest, he is expected to confirm his race fitness in Thursday’s practice sessions. Silverstone race winners and World Championship leaders Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima, in the #8 TS050 HYBRID, will also drive the high- downforce car, which concedes top speed in favour of more grip around corners. To enhance its preparations for Le Mans, the #9 TS050 HYBRID will use a low- downforce configuration which is optimised for the long straights which characterise the Circuit de la Sarthe. At the wheel, Stéphane Sarrazin joins WEC debutant Yuji Kunimoto and the returning Nicolas Lapierre.

  • F1 Debrief – Insanity Personified in a Circle
F1 Debrief – Insanity personified in a circle Christine: This is F1 Debrief - Insanity personified in a circle. Coming up on this show, we bring out the big guns to talk all things Indy 500. Our last F1 Debrief show was all about Fernando Alonso’s Indy 500 adven- ture, which is now just days away - very exciting! We got quite a bit of feedback telling us we didn’t know what we were talking about, which is a fair assessment. So to rectify the situation, we’ve roped in Pat W of the I Watch Too Much Racing blog, and Lukeh, both of whom are IndyCar fans and experts and can tell us where we’re going wrong. So, hopefully from this chat we can all learn a bit more about what to expect this weekend, and I'll be taking copious notes in case this situation should ever arise again. Mr C: Pat, firstly, give us the rundown on what's going. What is Fernando Alonso doing? Pat: Well first of all, hello, it's good to be back. It's been a while. What's he doing? He says he's going for the triple crown which is the three biggest races in the world, arguably. Which is the Monaco Grand Prix, which he's won already, the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Part of me wonders if that's what he's doing, whether that's his real motivation, or whether he just wanted to do something different because he's bored. But I think he does want to do Indy, genuinely.
