The board voted 34-4 with two abstentions in favor of the plan following a two-hour discussion at its monthly general meeting at the Park Slope YMCA on June 9. Letters From Leaders Life doesn’t just go up, up and up. We all have to confront and deal with adversity at different times in our life. Determination to get through it is very important as is belief that you will get through it. I faced my toughest challenge in my life when both my parents passed away, within a year of each other, when I was 18. I had to leave my home in Brooklyn during my sophomore year at N.Y.U and go to live with my sister, her husband and their one-year-old daughter in Bayside, Queens. Because of them and an active support group of friends at N.Y.U – where I became President of the college’s Student Council – I didn’t face my loneliness and feelings of being an “orphan” until I was living alone at Harvard Law School a few years later. Given I had a lifetime aggregate sum of $4,000 to my name, I was dependent on a full tuition scholarship which I would lose if I didn’t maintain at least a “B” average. With no one from my support group present to help me get through this period of deep anxiety, I turned to the law school’s psychiatrist for a year to help get me through this dark transitional period. During this time, I learned a critical life lesson: it is certainly no sign of weakness to get professional help when needed. My next major life turning point occurred in the year 1960. I was an associate at the law fi rm of Rosenman, Colin, Petschek and Freund servicing clients such as CBS, CBS founder William Paley and other major corporations.

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies.

  • Post-Cinematic Affect: on Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales
Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Post-Cinematic Affect: On Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales Steven Shaviro Wayne State University Introduction In this text, I look at three recent media productions – two films and a music video – that reflect, in particularly radical and cogent ways, upon the world we live in today. Olivier Assayas’ Boarding Gate (starring Asia Argento) and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales (with Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar) were both released in 2007. Nick Hooker’s music video for Grace Jones’s song ‘Corporate Cannibal’ was released (as was the song itself) in 2008. These works are quite different from one another, in form as well as content. ‘Corporate Cannibal’ is a digital production that has little in common with traditional film. Boarding Gate, on the other hand, is not a digital work; it is thoroughly cinematic, in terms both of technology, and of narrative development and character presentation. Southland Tales lies somewhat in between the other two. It is grounded in the formal techniques of television, video, and digital media, rather than those of film; but its grand ambitions are very much those of a big-screen movie. Nonetheless, despite their evident differences, all three of these works express, and exemplify, the ‘structure of feeling’ that I would like to call (for want of a better phrase) post-cinematic affect. Film-Philosophy | ISSN: 1466-4615 1 Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Why ‘post-cinematic’? Film gave way to television as a ‘cultural dominant’ a long time ago, in the mid-twentieth century; and television in turn has given way in recent years to computer- and network-based, and digitally generated, ‘new media.’ Film itself has not disappeared, of course; but filmmaking has been transformed, over the past two decades, from an analogue process to a heavily digitised one.

  • Olivier Assayas
[email protected] • www.janusfilms.com “No one sees anything. Ever. They watch, but they don’t understand.” So observes Connie Nielsen in Olivier Assayas’s hallucinatory, globe-spanning demonlover, a postmodern neonoir thriller and media critique in which nothing—not even the film itself—is what it appears to be. Nielsen plays Diane de Monx, a Volf Corporation executive turned spy for rival Mangatronics in the companies’ battle over the lucrative market of internet adult animation. But Diane may not be the only player at Volf with a hidden agenda: both romantic interest Hervé (Charles Berling) and office enemy Elise (Chloë Sevigny) seem to know her secret and can easily use it against her for their own purposes. As the stakes grow higher and Diane ventures into deadlier territory, and as Sonic Youth’s score pulses, Assayas explores the connections between multinational businesses and extreme underground media as well as the many ways twenty-first-century reality increasingly resembles violent, disorienting fiction.
