In game one, Raul Navarro’s two-run double in the bottom of the first put Winnipeg ahead 2-0. Kevin Lachance hit a two-out, three-run home run that capped a four-run bottom of the third, while Darren Seferina made it 8-0 in the fourth with a two-run shot. Kane County stormed back with a five-run top of the fifth that included a Javier Baez grand slam. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE CANARIES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 173-112 all-time against the Sioux Falls Canaries, including a 90-52 record in home games, and a 0-0 record at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Canaries finished 31-27 and in second place during the abbreviated 2020 American Association season. Sioux Falls ended a 10-year playoff drought and reached the American Association Championship Series where they lost the best- of-seven matchup to the Milwaukee Milkmen in five games. The Canaries were one of the original six members of the Northern League during the birth of modern independent baseball in 1993. With the St. Paul Saints electing to become the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins and the Sioux City Explorers not participating in the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canaries are now the longest-tenured franchise in independent baseball still operating in its original city. The Canaries joined the American Association as a charter member in 2006, and won their first league championship in 2008. The Canaries rebranded themselves as the Sioux Falls Pheasants in 2010 where they made a return trip to the American Association Championship Series. The club changed its name back to the Canaries in 2013. Mike Meyer is in his fifth year as Canaries’ manager. Meyer served as hitting coach for the Laredo Lemurs from 2015-16, which included the Lemurs’ 2015 American Association championship campaign. Meyer previously served as Sioux Falls’ pitching coach from 2007-14, and was a member of their championship staff in 2008. Meyer was 42-39 with six saves and a 4.20 ERA during an eight-year playing career, and was a part of the Saints’ 2004 Northern League championship club. Former Goldeyes’ outfielder Reggie Abercrombie hit 54 of his American Association-record 146 home runs for Sioux Falls from 2010-13. On June 4 th , 2014, five Goldeyes’ pitchers combined to no-hit the Canaries in the nightcap of a double header at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries beat the Goldeyes 14-5 in the first ever game at Shaw Park on June 4 th , 1999. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 7-12, in sixth place in the American Association North Division, and 5.0 games behind the Chicago Dogs and Milwaukee Milkmen. The Goldeyes just swept a rain-shortened, two-game series from the Kane County Cougars at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Goldeyes are sixth in the American Association in hitting (.263), 11 th in pitching (6.46), and fourth in fielding (.980). The Sioux Falls Canaries are 11-10, tied for second place in the South Division, and 2.0 games behind the Sioux City Explorers. The Canaries were just swept in a three-game series by the Cleburne Railroaders at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries are first in the league in batting (.315), 10 th in pitching (6.24), and 10 th in defence (.972). This is the second and final head-to-head series of the season between the Winnipeg and Sioux Falls. The Goldeyes were 5-4 against the Canaries in 2020. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes have not yet 6/12 vs. SF: RHP Christian James (1-1, 5.02) vs. LHP Ty Culbreth (4-0, 2.25) announced their starting pitcher for Friday’s game. 6/13 vs. SF: RHP Joey Gonzalez (1-2, 8.55) vs. RHP Tyler Garkow (1-2, 6.47) The Canaries go with veteran right-hander Carlos Pimentel who is 2-1 with a 4.88 ERA in four starts this season. Pimentel picked up the win vs. Houston last Saturday, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Pimentel walked three and struck out seven. Pimentel has struck out seven batters or more in all four of his starts this season. Prior to this season, Pimentel last pitched in 2019 where he was 6-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 12 starts and six relief appearances for the Atlantic League’s Sugar Land Skeeters. Pimentel allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his 12 starts. Pimentel helped the Skeeters reach the Atlantic League Championship Series where he was 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two postseason starts. Pimentel originally signed with the Texas Rangers as an international free agent in 2006, and reached the Triple-A level four straight years from 2013- 16. Pimentel has appeared in eight Major League spring training games for the Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and San Diego Padres in which he has not allowed an earned run in 11.1 combined innings while striking out 14. Pimentel is in his 14 th season of professional baseball, and is 90-75 lifetime with a 4.24 ERA in 334 games, 220 of them as a starting pitcher. Pimentel logged 100.0-plus innings seven times in an eight-year stretch from 2009-16, including back-to-back years of 140.0-plus innings in 2015 and 2016. Pimentel is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in two career starts against Winnipeg. Tonight will be Pimentel’s first career start at The Ballpark at Jackson. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 16 th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 25 th overall within the organization. During his first 15 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .544 overall winning percentage (784-657), 11 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and again in 2020 after guiding a team that played all of its games on the road. Forney’s .551 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-20) is the fourth-highest in league history (there have been 58 total American Association managers through the 2020 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. TENNESSEE BOUND: Due to the ongoing closure of the Canada/US border, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have partnered with the Jackson Generals professional baseball club to host Winnipeg at The Ballpark at Jackson to begin the 2021 season. The Generals were a Double-A Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2019. The franchise hosted the Southern League All-Star Game on two occasions, and won four Southern League championships. The Generals are located in Jackson, Tennessee, which is 208 kilometres southwest of Nashville and 140 kilometres northeast of Memphis. THOMPSON HEADED TO CARDINALS: Right-handed pitcher Cory Thompson had his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Thompson had one save and a 0.00 ERA in 12.0 innings pitched, striking out 19 and walking only four. Thompson is the fifth Goldeye to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization in 2021, and the 84 th in franchise history. DOUBLE DOWN: Following postponements both Tuesday and Wednesday, the Winnipeg Goldeyes now have 10 double headers that have either been played or remain on their 2021 schedule, which would set a franchise record. The Goldeyes played nine double headers during the 2009 season. The pandemic-shortened 2020 season ranks third with seven double headers. GOLDEYES SIGN CANADIAN RIGHT-HANDER: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Jake Polancic on Thursday. Polancic was 2-0 with a 0.92 ERA in 20 relief appearances in 2019 for the Short Season-A Northwest League’s Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks).

  • City Officials Covering All Bases at Ballpark This Summer
May 25, 2021 Media Contact: Kenneth Cummings (731) 499-1142 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Officials Covering All Bases at Ballpark this Summer Jackson is ready to knock it out of the park JACKSON, Tenn. – With the City of Jackson issuing a nationwide Request for Proposals for the future use of the Ballpark at Jackson, the Ballpark is entering into a new and promising era. “We are very excited,” Mayor Scott Conger says when asked about the future of the Ballpark. “This Stadium is a treasured asset of this City, and, with its prime location right off I- 40, we are very excited to see The Stadium 2.0.” Opened in 1998 and situated in a beautiful location alongside the Interstate, the Ballpark catches the attention of all who pass by it. Says Mayor Conger, “The Ballpark announces to the world: ‘We are in Jackson.’ It’s a tremendous resource built by our community for our community, and it’s time for it to live up to its full potential.” The Stadium most recently was under a license and use agreement with the owner of the Jackson Generals. But that agreement required the team continue to be part of minor league baseball. The Generals lost that status when Major League Baseball restructured its minor league system earlier this year and did not invite the Generals to be part of the new system – making the Generals the only team in the former Southern League not to receive such an invitation. This loss of affiliation put the Generals’ owner in material breach of its license agreement with the City.
