The Urban and Cultural Climate of Rotterdam Changed Radically Between 1970 and 2000. Opinions Differ About What the Most Importa
The urban and cultural climate of Rotterdam changed radically between 1970 and 2000. Opinions differ about what the most important changes were, and when they occurred. Imagine a Metropolis shows that it was first and foremost a new perspective on Rotterdam that stimulated the development of the city during this period. If the Rotterdam of 1970 was still a city with an identity crisis that wanted to be small rather than large and cosy rather than commercial, by 2000 Rotterdam had the image of the most metropolitan of all Dutch cities. Artists and other cultural practitioners – a group these days termed the ‘creative class’ – were the first to advance this metropolitan vision, thereby paving the way for the New Rotterdam that would begin to take concrete shape at the end of the 1980s. Imagine a Metropolis goes on to show that this New Rotterdam is returning to its nineteenth-century identity and the developments of the inter-war years and the period of post-war reconstruction. The year started with a fairly general fascination for water in the broadest way. With the Dutch culture of waterbuilders, the present day pragmatic reality and the uncertain future climate change in mind I started a quest in the world of water. Along this journey I found stepping stones in the form of interesting people at Urbanism, then in Civil Engineering and later on at Dura Vermeer. Circumstances at the Faculty of Architecture enabled me to choose and follow this path in my own way, which was a very learning experience. This brought me to my main mentor Fransje who helped me consistently throughout the year with defining the project and staying focused and introducing me to Harry de Brauw and Dura Vermeer. -

Research on New Towns New on Research First International Seminar 2006
Research on New Towns First International Seminar 2006 A major challenge of our time is the rapid urbanization of the world. What role may new towns as planned urban settlements play in accommodating the incredible rise of the urban population? In its first seminar, the newly created ‘International New Town Institute’ in Almere, Holland, combined a critical reappraisal of the past with a matter of fact approach to present conditions and an Research on New Towns assessment of the potential of simulation models to support decisions on the future. First International Seminar 2006 ‘Research on New Towns’ offers twelve lectures on these subjects Editor: D.H. Community Participation in Sustainable Urban Growth, Case Study of Almere, the Netherlands
POLLACK PERIODICA An International Journal for Engineering and Information Sciences DOI: 10.1556/606.2016.11.1.13 Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 145–155 (2016) www.akademiai.com COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN SUSTAINABLE URBAN GROWTH, CASE STUDY OF ALMERE, THE NETHERLANDS Szabolcs PORTSCHY Department of Freehand Drawing, Budapest University of Technology and Economics Műegyetem rkp. 3, H-1111 Budapest, Hungary, e-mail: [email protected] Received 1 January 2015; accepted 18 June 2015 Abstract: The city of Almere, which is one of the four main cities in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, has been among the fastest growing cities in Europe ever since it establishment in 1976. The economic and demographic expansion puts significant pressure on valuable green areas around Amsterdam, and Almere has both space and potential for growth. Already at the time of its creation, the plans of a multiple-core structure city attracted mixed reviews, leading urban designers calling it ‘an anti-city’. However, with time it has developed into a mature, healthy and sustainable urban environment. With the new expansion that would add 60.000 new dwellings and 100.000 new jobs by 2030, the city faces new challenges, which require visionary strategic planning once again. The intended growth of Almere is planned to take place in an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable fashion. To achieve this and to inspire contribution to future developments, the city has defined seven principles in concurrence with international sustainability experts. Community participation is one of the strongest principals in this innovative place-making experiment. Creators of the new strategic vision imagine large-scale citizen involvement, bottom- up community and private initiative through empowerment and ownership, from the design phase to the implementation.
