    Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis to the People of God August 20, 2018 “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Cor 12:26). These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons. Crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers alike. Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient. Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults. 1. If one member suffers… In recent days, a report was made public which detailed the experiences of at least a thousand survivors, victims of sexual abuse, the abuse of power and of conscience at the hands of priests over a period of approximately seventy years. Even though it can be said that most of these cases belong to the past, nonetheless as time goes on we have come to know the pain of many of the victims.

If you are the sort of Catholic who has been asleep in the pews at any point during the past fifty years—as everyone who works here at ChurchMilitant.TV once was themselves —don’t feel bad or weirded out. You are like the vast majority of Catholics who have been lulled into a sense of complacency and indifference by leaders in the Church. Among many of these leaders, the older ones were the revolutionaries, or the disciples of the revolutionaries, and they have taken control of many aspects of Church life. That was a generation or so ago—stretching back to the 1970s to 1990s. Their names are well known: men like Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco, Cardinal John Dearden of Detroit, Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee (an openly active homosexual), Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany, New York, Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester, New York, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, DC. These were the marquee name destroyers of Catholic tradition, but they had MANY other allies in the US episcopate and lower clergy in those halcyon years. In diocese after diocese, they tore the Church apart, introducing innovation after innovation meant to dislodge the Church from its traditional moorings.

    Report on Key Findings in Correspondence Concerning Theodore E. McCarrick “Follow the Path of Truth Wherever it May Lead” May 28, 2019 he former Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick ordained me to the priesthood 25 years ago today. TI served as his personal secretary in the Archdiocese of Newark (September 1994 – June 1995) and also assisted him in a secretarial capacity during his many visits to Rome in my 19 years of ministry there. After long consideration, I have made the decision to place in the public domain some of the correspondence and other information related to McCarrick that I possess in my many years of service to him. I have spent time in prayer and discernment about the moral basis for revealing these. My decision follows attempts since September 2018 to share and discuss these with the Holy See and other Church leaders. Realizing full well that the debate about McCarrick has become highly politicized, I wish only to present facts that will help the Church to know the truth. From the outset of this report, I pledge my unswerving affection, loyalty and support for Pope Francis and his Magisterium in his tireless ministry as the Successor of Peter, as I manifested also to Pope Benedict XVI, grateful for their paternal solicitude and efforts to address the scourge of abuse. Indeed, my actions in releasing this report at this time are encouraged by the Holy Father’s motu proprio “Vos Estis Lux Mundi” (“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Mt 5:14), based on the overriding principle that it is imperative to place in the public domain, at the right time and prudently, information that has yet to come to light and impacts directly on allegations of criminal activity, the restrictions imposed on my now laicized former Archbishop, and who knew what and when.

I remember the night most vividly: the blessing of the new fire and the paschal candle on the steps of the church in the dimming dusk; the darkness of the church slowly illuminated as the Light of Christ spread from candle to candle; the procession of the catechumens in the wake of the paschal light toward the font of rebirth; the water trickling over my forehead as the words of baptism were pronounced, and me worried about getting my tie in the font, and the sweet smell of the sacred chrism of my anointing and Confirmation, which lingered on the ride home, and even until the next morning. Since that time, I have sought to give my life entirely to Jesus Christ and His Gospel, and to live according to the dignity of that baptism, to know ever more deeply in what font I have been washed, by whose Spirit I have been reborn, by whose Blood I have been redeemed. I have failed at this endeavor many times and in many ways. Nevertheless, my rebirth in the waters of baptism is the central, defining fact of my life, to which, by God’s grace, I always return. In fact, the moment of baptism is the central and defining reality of all our lives.
