The address of Rocky River High School is: 20951 Detroit Road, Rocky River, Ohio 44116 Revised 2/17/19 A Review of the Season 2018 The 2018 Rocky River Girls Soccer (RRGS) team was the 31st team in the history of Rocky River High School Girls Soccer. The 2018 RRGS results virtually matched the 31-year historical averages with 10 wins (avg = 10.5), 7 losses (avg = 6.3), 2 ties (avg = 1.8), and a winning percentage of 59% (avg = 63%). With a senior laden team, they won their first conference title with the last RRGS title occurring in 2014 when these seniors were in 8th grade. The 2018 RRGS team went 5-1-0 in the Great Lakes Conference (GLC) sharing the title with Bay (whom River beat) and Holy Name (whom River lost to but Bay beat Holy Name). The top 3 teams in the GLC were pretty evenly matched: RR beat Bay 1-0, Bay beat HN 1-0, and HN beat RR 2-1. Those same three teams met in the District playoff with Bay beating Holy Name 3-2 in overtime and Bay beating RR 1-0 in the District final. Just as in 2017, the strength of the 2018 was defense. The 2018 RRGS team gave up only 16 goals (0.84 goals allowed/game) and achieved 7 shutouts. The 16 goals allowed and 0.84 goals allowed/game in a season are both the 5th best in RRGS history. The 2018 season schedule was a daunting challenge. The seven (7) RRGS losses were to daunting teams: Kirtland 0-1 (D3 State Runner-Up) Avon (IN) 1-2 (D1 Regional Finalist) Summit Country Day 0-1 (D2 Regional Semi-Finalist) Buckeye 0-1 (finished 15-1-1) Holy Name 1-2 (finished 13-4-1) Bishop Watterson 0-2 (D1 State Semi-Finalist) Bay 0-1 in District Final (D2 State Runner-up) Except for Buckeye and Holy Name, all teams that beat RRGS, were eliminated in their State Tournament by the eventual State Champion team. The 2018 team had eight seniors Lydia Brandt, Nastasia Braun, Allison Contenza, Beth Erml, Lauren Gifford, Alexandra Gluntz, Annie O’Toole and Chloe Reust. Contenza and Gluntz both earned a rare fourth varsity letter. In another rarity, Gluntz received both a Conference Honor and a Greater Cleveland Honor in all 4 years of her high school career. Contenza was named the 2018 Conference Player of the Year while earning another All-Ohio award this time as a 1st team player plus an All-Central Regional Team involving players from multiple states. A lot of the success of the 2018 teams can be pointed to the defense. Both Gabrielle Avila (14 games, 7 wins, 6 losses, 1 tie, 13 goals allowed, 0.93 goals allowed/game average, 106 saves) and Sabrina Rick (5 games, 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie, 3 goals allowed, 0.60 goals allowed/game average, 35 saves) were stellar with defenders Alexandra Gluntz, Chloe Reust, Samantha Miller, Ellie Duncan, and Kailey Budzar in front of them. Statistically, this team’s season, especially defensively, ranks as one of the best in RRGS history: Top 11 – Most Shutouts in a Season = 7 (11th) Top 10 – Fewest Goals Allowed, Season = 16 (5th) Top 10 – Lowest Goals Allowed/Game Average, Season = 0.84 (5th) The scoring was primarily led by Maya Patti (11 goals), Lizzie Hamker (8 goals) and newcomer Sophia Murray (8 goals). The team assist leader was Allison Contenza (11 assists). This just put Contenza into the top 10 all time. Top 10 – Most Assists, Career = 47, Allison Contenza (10th, tied) It should be noted that there are a few brains on the team graduating as OSSCA All Academics (cumulative GPA > 3.699): Lydia Brandt, Nastasia Braun, Allison Contenza, Beth Erml, Lauren Gifford, Alexandra Gluntz, Annie O’Toole, and Chloe Reust. Gluntz is also a National Merit Finalist. Rocky River High School (RRHS) is a public high school consisting of grades 9-12 with an enrollment of about 900 students whereas no student lives more than 2.5 miles from the school and RRHS is surrounded by private schools: Rocky River Magnificat High School (500 yards), Rocky River Lutheran West High School (1.4 miles), Cleveland St Joseph Academy (2.9 miles), Lakewood St Edwards High School (3.9 miles) and Cleveland St Ignatius High School (8.1 miles) that filters some of the city of Rocky River’s student athlete population.
