John Albert Cooksley Family Tree. For Michael Cooksley. (Page 1 continued) (Last update) Friday, 19 September 2014

John Albert Cooksley and Alice Rosina's marriage failed about 1902 and by 1904 she was living with Frederick Turbutt. His marriage had ended with his wife Ann Turbutt going to live with Thomas Gregory. After Ann Turbutt died in 1902 Thomas Gregory married Charlotte the widow of Matthew Lear. When Alice Turbutt moved in with Frederick she took her youngest child Robert Cooksley with her. She then had a daughter Charlotte Annie Turbutt with Frederick Turbutt. When Ann Turbutt went to live with Thomas Gregory she took her three daughters by Frederick: Ann, Rebecca and Daisy Turbutt, with her. Ann (mother) died quite soon after and Thomas' new wife Charlotte had a close relationship with the Turbutt daughters. Rebecca in particular appears to be close to Thomas and Charlotte. Daisy actually returned to live with her father Frederick. It was interesting that Daisy Turbutt kept in touch with Robert Cooksley until he left to join his sister Alice (Scott) in Canada. Towards the end of her life Charlotte Gregory lived with Rebecca's daughter Daisy Ludlow and her husband. Charlotte Turbutt never married but was cared for by Rebecca and various members of the Darby family.

No study like this can ever be complete but enough has been uncovered to provide a fascinating story.

This is a story of a close knit family group brought together by a series of chance events. Within this group Charlotte Gregory and Rebecca Turbutt stand out as unifying forces.

This was like the script of a TV series dealing with another part of London but apparently without the frictions.

Southwark seems to be a friendlier more caring place.

Faraday Street; after the War in 1945 Rebecca Darby and Charlotte Annie Turbutt were at 51 Faraday Street Southwark. Rebecca had replaced Daisy as Charlotte's companion. Next door was Laura M J Darby at 53 Faraday Street Southwark. A short distance away at 37 Faraday Street was Daisy Alice Maud Ludlow, who lived there until 1949. The next year at 51 Faraday Street Southwark were Rebecca Darby, Charlotte Annie Turbutt and Frederick Darby. Next door at 53 Faraday Street Southwark were Ernest W Darby and Laura M J Darby. Death records suggest that Laura was born about 1880 and Ernest 1910. This indicates that they are a generation apart but their actual relationship is unknown. Frederick and Ernest Darby were probably back from serving during the war. In 1948 the London Electoral Register had Rebecca Darby and Charlotte A Turbutt at 51 Faraday Street Southwark and Ernest W Darby and Laura M J Darby at 53 Faraday Street Southwark. There were the same entries 1949 – 1951.

In 1951 Rebecca Lillian Jones (nee Presland) married Harry S Scotchford in Paddington. This is easier name to trace. They were at 10 Chesson Street, Barons Court, W14 at least until 1961.

Meanwhile in 1948 Frederick Darby was listed for 152 Albany Road Camberwell Southwark. Then in 1949 Frederick Darby and Joyce Darby were at 152 Albany Road (see above for marriage to Joyce); and in 1950 Frederick Darby and Joyce F Darby were at 150 Albany Road. Back in Faraday Street in 1948 at number 37 was Daisy Ludlow and also Charlotte Gregory. Thomas Gregory probably died 1935 in Southwark aged 64. The next year Sidney C Ludlow had rejoined the household. Charlotte Gregory died 1950 aged 84.

In 1950 Daisy and Sidney Ludlow moved to 11 Marriott House, Hill Road, Lewisham SE6, where they remained until at least 1960.

Next in 1953 at 51 Faraday Street there were Frederick R Darby, Joyce F Darby, Rebecca Darby and Charlotte A Turbot – Frederick and Joyce had joined the household. Next door were still Ernest W Darby and Laura M J Darby at 53 Faraday Street Southwark. These entries continued to the end of the relevant London Electoral Resisters in 1960.

The deaths of the remaining players were: Qtr 1 1965 Laura J Darby died aged 85 Qtr 2 1966 Rebecca Darby died Deptford aged 75 Qtr 1 1979 Ernest William Darby died Lambeth aged 68 born 20 Nov 1910 July 1990 Charlotte Annie Turbutt died Lambeth aged 85 born 25 Nov 1904 Jan 1992 Frederick Robert Darby died Southwark aged 66 born 5 May 1925 Sep 2002 Joyce Florence Darby died Lambeth aged 75 born 5 May 1927

It would be expected that Rebecca's children would stay nearby. Daisy Ludlow, James Lear and Frederick Darby were all living in parts of Southwark. Rebecca Presland having married Alfred Jones was too difficult to trace. Her later days with Harry S Scotchford located her in Fulham. It was more surprising that the two families of Frederick Turbutt kept in contact, and also a son of Alfred Darby by his first marriage: even Robert Cooksley and James Gregory were still in touch, despite obvious possible family conflicts.
