PRESIDENT'S CORNER
President Ken Joe, Immediate Past President Scott Vandrick (Centennial President) Past President Mary Lou Byrne (2018-2019) & Past President Phil Miles (2017-2018)
Hello Pasadena Rotary, Our club in the face of Covid19 continues to thrive, stay strong, and make a difference. As one of the largest clubs in Southern California, this is not your average Rotary Club! We are a club of over 200 members and year-to-date we are plus 1 member!
As much as I would like to take credit, the credit goes to our leadership past and present who have established this amazing club culture and reputation in our community. The credit goes to our committee chairs and members who do the work. The credit goes to our "fun havers and do gooders!"
I want to challenge you to invite ONE prospective member to our club. Invite someone that believes in giving back to the community through service and enjoys making new friends.
I am always available to you for a socially distant cup of coffee! In Your Service,
Ken
THE SCOOT ZONE
By Justene Adamec, Bureau Chief
President Ken Joe called the meeting to order and, like magic, all of the members on Zoom were muted. Past President Phil Miles led us on his guitar, I Call Your Name by The Beatles (natch!). For the Inspiration, Debbie Unruh read the Prayer of St Francis of Assisi, which begins with "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace." The poll question was which social media sites do you use. Facebook was a clear favorite.
George Falardeau introduced new member Char Bland. Char recently ran for
Pasadena City Council. While she did not win, she received the endorsement of now Vice President Kamala Harris.
Past President Howard Raff introduced new member John Ehlers. John is an
agent and broker assisting clients with developing wealth through real estate. He only handles raw land so he wants our members who are residential and commercial real estate brokers to know he's not your competition!
Planned Parenthood is a corporate member of Rotary. One of the features of a corporate membership is that attendance at the meetings can be rotated between various team members. Rachel Abelson introduced new team member
Johanna Clark. Past President Mary Lou Byrnedonated to the Polio Pig. Her announcement
affects almost all of us: All you Baby Boomers who are over 50 and had chicken pox as a kid: Please be sure to get vaccinated for shingles!!! That chicken pox virus is dormant in your body and if you're not vaccinated it can flare up and cause shingles and believe me when I tell you that is not anything you want to get involved in! It's two shots and you need it even if you have had singles because you can get it again!
Relatedly, if you have what you think is a painful cluster of spider bites or bug bites that don't get better after a day or two, please call your doctor. My doc told me that most people who have shingles think it's spider bites, and many of them (including me) put off going to the doctor until it's too late for anti-viral meds to do any good.
Don't be like me and put it off. Get vaccinated for singles. The end.
Treasurer Fred Findley provided a thorough
but simple to understand Financial Update to the Club with Income Statement year-to-date 12/31/20, Balance Sheet and P&L Forecast ending 6/30/21.
Josh Betta introduced our speaker, Michael Alexander Ph.D. Michael is an accomplished public speaker who has trained expert witnesses and has served as an expert witness himself. He has written a book - Survive and Thrive on the Witness Stand: A 15 Step Guide. Today he shared a humorous speech on naming a child.
Board Treasurer Fred Findley
Naming a child is not the same as naming a pet. A pet isn't going to complain about their name 12 years later. Pick a name that won't subject your child to teasing or bullying. Pick a name that sounds good when you're yelling it from the top of the stairs. A middle name is just a way to give you more time to calm down about what caused you to yell.
When his wife was pregnant with their only son, they discussed many names. They tried family names. They settled on Max (although Michael wanted Maximillian and his wife wanted Maxwell). Then his brother was bit by a dog named Max.
Finally, they settled on Noah. As these things go, his wife went into labor and they went to the hospital. As they were getting her ready, Michael has a strange experience. It was as if someone whispered in his ear "Samuel." He checked his watch and it was 6:09 am.
When his son was born, he just didn't seem like a Noah. While Michael was feeding him for the first time, he was running through a list of names and when he reached Samuel, the baby starting sucking harder. So Samuel it was. Samuel is pleased to have chosen his own name.
When Michael boarded the elevator to leave, a woman with a newborn was there. She said he'd been born at 6:09 am -- when Michael had checked his watch. Michael asked his name. Noah. So the voice saying Samuel was telling him there was already another Noah born that day.
After President Ken moderated a Q&A session, members broke into the BreakOut sessions to connect or stay connected.
