Mind Body Problem and Brandom's Analytic Pragmatism
The Mind-Body Problem and Brandom’s Analytic Pragmatism François-Igor Pris [email protected] Erfurt University (Nordhäuserstraße 63, 99089 Erfurt, Germany) Abstract. I propose to solve the hard problem in the philosophy of mind by means of Brandom‟s notion of the pragmatically mediated semantic relation. The explanatory gap between a phenomenal concept and the corresponding theoretical concept is a gap in the pragmatically mediated semantic relation between them. It is closed if we do not neglect the pragmatics. 1 Introduction In the second section, I will formulate the hard problem. In the third section, I will describe a pragmatic approach to the problem and propose to replace the classical non-normative physicalism/naturalism with a normative physicalism/naturalism of Wittgensteinian language games. In subsection 3.1, I will give a definition of a normative naturalism. In subsection 3.2, I will make some suggestions concerning an analytic interpretation of the second philosophy of Wittgenstein. In the fourth section, I will propose a solution to the hard problem within Brandom‟s analytic pragmatism by using the notion of the pragmatically mediated semantic relation. In the fifth section, I will make some suggestions about possible combinatorics related to pragmatically mediated semantic relations. In the sixth section, I will consider pragmatic and discursive versions of the mind-body identity M=B. In the last section, I will conclude that the explanatory gap is a gap in a pragmatically mediated semantic relation between B and M. It is closed if we do not neglect pragmatics. 2 The Hard Problem The hard problem in the philosophy of mind can be formulated as follows. -

Crispin WRIGHT: Wittgenstein on the Foundations of Mathematics, London: Duckworth 1980. Michael Dummett1 has long been encouraging philosophers of language to take up the task of constructing for natural languages semantics alternative to that originating with Frege. A classical Fregean or 'realist' semantics is characterized by its fascination with truth; for a realist, the understanding of a statement need in some way be analyzed in terms of a knowledge of its truth conditions. Dum mett envisions a likely alternative or 'anti-realist' semantics in the form of a generalization of the intuitionistic critique of classical mathematics. The nub of an antirealist semantics would be verification; the meaning of a statement is to be explained in terms of the conditions under which its assertion would be justi fied. Dummett and, recently, Crispin Wrighe have argued that the meaning-as-use doctrine of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations3 and Remarks on the Foundaticns of Mathematics4, provides the materials for a thoroughgoing anti realism. DummettS believes that the species of anti-realism deriving from Witt genstein is compatible with intuitionism in mathematics, while Wright sees in Wittgenstein an antirealism far surpassing the intuitionistic in its strictures. Wright's Wittgenstein would repudiate any philosophical semantics which pre supposes that linguistic expressions have determinate sense or extension. The austerity of this position derives from an argument for what one might term "the nonobjectivity of sense", an argument which Wright takes as summarizing the conclusions Wittgenstein intended his reader to draw from a consideration of the procedure of following a rule. I To hold that sense is nonobjective is to believe that a shared understanding of an expression in no way enjoins on speakers an adherence to a determinate pattern 1. -

Introduction William James said that sometimes detailed philosophical argument is irrelevant. Once a current of thought is really under way, trying to oppose it with argument is like planting a stick in a river to try to alter its course: ''round your obstacle flows the water and 'gets there just the same"' (James 1909, p. 55). He thought pragmatism was such a river. There is a contemporary river that sometimes calls itself pragmatism, although other titles are probably better. At any rate it is the denial of differences, the cel- ebration of the seamless web of language, the soothing away of distinc- tions, whether of primary versus secondary, fact versus value, description versus expression, or of any other significant kind. -
Mind-Body Dualism and Mental Causation
A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree by Examining Committee Members: ii ABSTRACT The Exclusion Argument for physicalism maintains that since every physical effect has a sufficient physical cause, and cases of causal overdetermination (wherein a single effect has more than one sufficient cause) are rare, it follows that if minds cause physical effects as frequently as they seem to, then minds must themselves be physical in nature. I contend that the Exclusion Argument fails to justify the rejection of interactionist dualism (the view that the mind is non-physical but causes physical effects). In support of this contention, I argue that the multiple realizability of mental properties and the phenomenal and intentional features of mental events give us reason to believe that mental properties and their instances are non-physical. I also maintain (a) that depending on how overdetermination is defined, the thesis that causal overdetermination is rare is either dubious or else consistent with interactionist dualism and the claim that every physical effect has a sufficient physical cause, and (b) that the claim that every physical effect has a sufficient physical cause is not clearly supported by current science. This book is a new attempt to clarify what is at issue in the contemporary realism debates and to suggest which form the controversies ought to take. Wright has contributed to the- se debates for quite some time and essentially taken the anti-realist side (witness the papers collected in Realism, Meaning and Truth, 1987, 21993, and the forthcoming Realism, Rules and Objectivity, both Oxford: Basil Blackwell). In Truth and Objectivity however, he takes a step back and sketches a neutral ground upon which both sides could agree in or- der to define their oppositions clearly, thus enabling fruitful discussions. His methodolog- ical suggestion for a realism debate in a given assertoric discourse is that both sides should agree on a “minimal” concept of truth for that discourse and then see whether ascent to a more metaphysically substantial concept of truth is warranted, which would constitute a realism for the discourse in question. If Wright had managed to set the agenda in a way that does justice to both sides, this book would have constituted a major contribution to contemporary epistemology and metaphysics. Wright presents his minimalism as the result of a critique of deflationism about truth, which is said to show “a tendency to inflate under pressure” (13). According to Wright, deflationism amounts to saying that the content of the truth predicate is wholly fixed by the disquotational schema “p” is true if and only if p plus the contention that claiming a sentence to be true is the same as asserting it – in Wright’s terminology: For a linguistic practice, truth registers a norm that does not differ from that of warranted assertibility. -

Schleiermacher and W. Dilthey. Hermeneutic philosophy refers mostly to M. Heidegger’s. This paper addresses natural science from the perspective of Heidegger’s analysis of meaning and interpretation. Its purpose is to incorporate into the philosophy of science those aspects of historicality, culture, and tradition that are absent from the traditional analysis of theory and explanation, to re-orient the current discussion about scientific realism around the hermeneutics of meaning and truth in science, and to establish some relationship between the current philosophy of natural science and hermeneutical philosophy. -

Expression, Truth, and Reality: Some Variations on Themes from Wright Dorit Bar-On, UNC-Chapel Hill 1. Introduction: Expressivism as an ‘Anti-Realist Paradigm’ Expressivism, broadly construed, is the view that the function of utterances in a given area of discourse is to give expression to our sentiments or other (non-cognitive) mental states or attitudes, rather than report or describe some range of facts. This view naturally seems an attractive option wherever it is suspected that there may not be a domain of facts for the given discourse to be describing. Familiarly, to avoid commitment to ethical facts, the ethical expressivist suggests that ethical utterances (e.g., “Gratuitous torture is wrong”, “What John did was morally good”) do not serve to ascribe ethical properties to objects, actions, persons, or states of affairs. Instead, they simply function to give voice to certain of our sentiments (or ‘pro/con’ attitudes). Along similar lines, philosophers have entertained versions of expressivism about the aesthetic, the modal, the mental, what is funny, even about theoretical science and knowledge ascriptions.1 In several of his writings, Crispin Wright lists expressivism among the chief ‘anti-realist paradigms’ and not a successful one at that. Insofar as expressivism purports to allow us to avoid unwanted ontological commitments, its success depends on denying – implausibly – that the relevant discourses “really deal in truth-evaluable contents”. Yet Wright thinks that these discourses do possess truth-evaluability, since they exhibit all the relevant ‘assertoric trappings’, which, on the ‘minimalist’ conception Wright develops in Truth and Objectivity, suffice for truth- aptitude and truth.2 If it were indeed true that expressivism, in every case, required denying truth- evaluability, then Wright would be correct to declare the expressivist move ultimately a ‘faux pas’ (Wright 1988: 34). -

Jaegwon Kim’s “supervenience argument” purports to show that epiphenomenalism about the mental follows from premises that any nonreductive physicalist should find acceptable. Kim regards his argument as a reductio ad absurdum of nonreductive physicalism. We reconstruct and evaluate the latest version of Kim’s argument. We argue that the premises of Kim’s argument are much less innocent than they may appear. In particular, we single out for criticism an unstated assumption about the identity conditions of events, and we argue that this assumption could be seen as all by itself implying that nonreductive physicalism is false, thus begging the question against that position. It is also dubious, we argue, whether Kim’s unstated assumption is even consistent with one of the stated assumptions of his argument, “the principle of causal exclusion”, given a standard understanding of causal overdetermination. We conclude with some polemical remarks about the conception of causation presupposed by Kim’s argument—a conception that appears to depart from that at work in science and commonsense discourse. 1. Introduction1 Many philosophers have worried that physical causation may “exclude” mental causation—physical and mental causes “compete” for efficacy, and because of some principle (the causal closure of the physical domain, for example), physical causes inevitably “win”. A DEFENSE OF NON-REDUCTIVE PHYSICALISM A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Matthew Christian Haug May 2007 © 2007 Matthew Christian Haug A DEFENSE OF NON-REDUCTIVE PHYSICALISM Matthew Christian Haug, Ph. D. Cornell University 2007 I develop a novel formulation of, and argument for, non-reductive physicalism – roughly, the view that mental properties are natural properties that are realized by, but not identical to, neural and other low-level physical properties. Non-reductive physicalism has long been the dominant view in the philosophy of mind but has recently been challenged from two main directions. The first type of attack, the causal exclusion problem, points out an apparent inconsistency in non-reductive physicalism. The second type of attack focuses on the multiple realizability of mental properties: questioning either its prevalence or its efficacy in blocking reduction. In response to the exclusion problem, I first argue that one of the claims used to formulate the problem, the completeness of physics, has two parts and that there is no single domain of physical entities that is the smallest domain of which both parts are true. The conflation of these two parts has made it appear that non-reductive physicalism is inconsistent. I then show how to use the two completeness claims as part of an argument for a form of physicalism that need not be reductive. In response to the second type of attack, I provide a novel basis for the irreducibility of mental properties. -
Realism and Anti-Realism in Mathematics
REALISM AND ANTI-REALISM IN MATHEMATICS The purpose of this essay is (a) to survey and critically assess the various meta- physical views - Le., the various versions of realism and anti-realism - that people have held (or that one might hold) about mathematics; and (b) to argue for a particular view of the metaphysics of mathematics. Section 1 will provide a survey of the various versions of realism and anti-realism. In section 2, I will critically assess the various views, coming to the conclusion that there is exactly one version of realism that survives all objections (namely, a view that I have elsewhere called full-blooded platonism, or for short, FBP) and that there is ex- actly one version of anti-realism that survives all objections (namely, jictionalism). The arguments of section 2 will also motivate the thesis that we do not have any good reason for favoring either of these views (Le., fictionalism or FBP) over the other and, hence, that we do not have any good reason for believing or disbe- lieving in abstract (i.e., non-spatiotemporal) mathematical objects; I will call this the weak epistemic conclusion. Finally, in section 3, I will argue for two further claims, namely, (i) that we could never have any good reason for favoring either fictionalism or FBP over the other and, hence, could never have any good reason for believing or disbelieving in abstract mathematical objects; and (ii) that there is no fact of the matter as to whether fictionalism or FBP is correct and, more generally, no fact of the matter as to whether there exist any such things as ab- stract objects; I will call these two theses the strong epistemic conclusion and the metaphysical conclusion, respectively.
