2019 Lecture 4 28 July 2019, 4pm – 5pm ENTERPRISE: THE ARMENIANS OF SINGAPORE Dr Nadia Wright Historian and author of The Armenians of Singapore: A Short History Singapore is largely a nation of immigrants. This bicentennial year seems an apt time to acknowledge the significant contributions made to its development by one of its smallest minorities: the Armenians. Conspicuous in Singapore from 1820, individual Armenians have made their mark in the civic, social and economic life of Singapore. Two of Singapore’s national treasures – St Gregory’s Church and Raffles Hotel – as well as Singapore’s national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim, and its national newspaper, The Straits Times, owe their origin to this tiny but enterprising community. In this illustrated talk, Australian-based author and historian Dr Nadia Wright will discuss the dynamics of the Armenian community, its origin and achievements. TIME (MIN) 0:01 Hi, good afternoon. It’s a very heartwarming presence for an author, I would imagine, [Speaker: to see a full house. I welcome all of you this afternoon, especially because we have Moderator, Dr Nadia Wright here who is going to share her research on the Armenians. She’s Vidya Murthy] kindly agreed to present her findings at our regular series, HistoriaSG. The National Museum is also very happy to welcome all of you as well as the publishers of her book, and also to sponsor the venue for the release of the book. I also welcome the publishers, Entrepot Publishing, Leslie, Marcus and all your friends. Please do stay back and help to fill up the feedback forms.

Yet, unlike many ancient civilizations, we have managed to survive, and this fact is amazing in itself. Today, in the first half of the 21st century, we are again poised at a critical juncture and are facing choices that will have very serious consequences for our nation. We must compare possible trajectories for the nation’s future development and make choices that reflect our keen awareness of our responsibility to the generations to come.

  • ORANG KRISTEN ARMENIA Suatu Minoritas Kecil Di Indonesia Yang
ALLE G. HOEKEMA ORANG KRISTEN ARMENIA Suatu Minoritas Kecil di Indonesia yang Sudah Punah ALLE G. HOEKEMA* Abstract The Armenian Church in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) came into being after Armenian traders from Persia (Iran) entered to the country in the middle of the 19th century and remained here; at fi rst in Batavia (Jakarta), then also in Central Java, and especially in Surabaya. Both their church life and their attitude in society were inwardly oriented. All of their priests came from Persia. An Armenian trading network existed widely in South East Asia and contacts with the mother church in Persia and Armenia itself were very strong. Though the Armenian community contributed positively to the Indonesian society, nevertheless its closed attitude proved to be a major weakness. During the colonial time the Armenians received an equal status to the Dutch and a number of them perished due to the Japanese occupation. These factors caused the liquidation of this community around 1960. The church buildings were sold and the remaining members migrated to Netherlands, USA, and Australia. Keywords: church history, the Armenians, ethnic minority, diaspora. GEMA TEOLOGI Vol. 37, No.

  • The Founding of Singapore and the Chinese Kongsis of West Borneo (Ca.1819–1840)
99 The Founding of Singapore and the Chinese Kongsis of West Borneo (ca.1819–1840) Ying-kit CHAN* Abstract Many historians have examined why Singapore failed to be a major trading center before the nineteenth century. This paper revisits the current scholarly literature on the founding of Singapore to make two arguments. First, I argue that we cannot understand the founding of Singapore and its role in the British Second Empire without delineating Singapore’s role as a forest- and marine-goods metropolis in the precolonial Chinese trading networks of Southeast Asia. Second, I try to show how the Chinese kongsis 公司公司 of West Borneo turned Singapore into a forest- and marine-goods metropolis, formed their own political and social institutions, and collectively functioned as a third autonomous pseudostate power alongside the British and the Dutch. This reconceptualization enables us to see the founding of Singapore as a joint enterprise, and not a solely British achievement. Keywords: British Empire, Chinese kongsis, forest and marine goods, Singapore, West Borneo Introduction Britain contested with France for naval mastery in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean in the eighteenth century. At the end of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), the main reservoirs of British strength in the Indian Ocean were in Bengal and on the Coromandel Coast. The Seven Years’ War and subsequent wars between the British and French were fought in continental Europe, Canada, the West Indies, India, and the Philippines. From these experiences, the British realized that their economic and military security rested on a continental balance of power and global naval supremacy.
