Serj Tankian (vocals) and Daron Malakian (guitar) met in 1993 as their two bands shared the same rehearsal studio. Shortly thereafter, they united under the name Soil. After several lineup changes, including the addition of Shavo Odadjian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums), System of a Down was finally born in 1995. Amid lyrical assaults ranging from the personal to aggressive political and social indictments, SOAD draws upon an unusually wide range of stylistic influences including rap, jazz, hardcore, goth, Middle-Eastern, and even Armenian music. Dynamics can change on a dime. Vocalist/lyricist Serj explains, “We don’t just concentrate on an aggressive sound, though we have that. A banda “SYNTEN OF A DOWN” Formada em 1994, Glendale, Califórnia, EUA, atualmente é composta por Serj Tankian (vocais, teclados), Daron Malakian (guitarra, vocais), Shavo Odadjian (baixo) e John Dolmayan (bateria). A banda chegou ao topo após o lançamento do álbum Toxicity, que estreou em primeiro lugar na Billboard e atingiu o topo das paradas no Canadá, inclusive na semana dos ataques de 11 de setembro de 2001 em Nova York. Permaneceu ainda assim no topo na semana dos ataques, embora sob fortes críticas políticas sobre o controverso single "Chop Suey!" que foi banido das rádios americanas devido à sua letra, pois tinha uma grande semelhança aos ataques que aconteceram. Unlike previous years, River Campus stu- dents will not be relocated, and will remain in their regular dorms for either a short-term or long-term stay, according to the Residential Life website. The former is from Nov. 25 un- til Dec. 19 (last day of finals), and the second from Nov. 25 to Jan. 22. Students looking to stay could register us- ing an online survey that closed today. Any student who has not yet reached out, or who wants to stay past Dec. 19 but doesn’t have a spring contract, should contact winterstay- [email protected]. Author: Linn Olsson Term and year: Spring term 2010 Institution: University of Gothenburg, Department of Languages and Literatures/English Supervisor: Pia Köhlmyr Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to investigate the different linguistic aspects of a certain subgenre of metal music, power metal, to get a general picture of the language use in metal song lyrics. Method: A qualitative study with song lyrics as empirical data. Material: Song lyrics from one selected band were analysed. Keywords: Metal music, power metal, Falconer, musicology, song lyric analysis. Summary/Main results: This investigation shows that the lyrics of power metal can deal with a wide range of topics; from love, freedom and oppression to grief, greed and poverty. Date: October 18, 2018 Sold Out 7th Annual Monster Energy Aftershock Wraps Biggest Year Ever With 60,000 In Attendance October 13 & 14 At Discovery Park In Sacramento, CA With System Of A Down, Deftones & More Monster Energy Aftershock wrapped its biggest year ever, with 60,000 in attendance over a sold- out weekend October 13 & 14 at Discovery Park in Sacramento, CA. System Of A Down and Sacramento natives Deftones headlined the 7th annual festival, joined by Alice In Chains, Incubus, Godsmack, Shinedown, 311, Slash featuring Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators, At The Drive In, Seether and many more. Even with expanded capacity for this year’s festival, weekend passes for Monster Energy Aftershock were sold out months in advance. The festival wrapped up with an unforgettable performance from System Of A Down, who made their Monster Energy Aftershock debut with one of their first appearances in the States in three years, as the band celebrates the 20th anniversary of their landmark self-titled first album. Saturday night was capped off by local favorites Deftones, who headlined the festival for the first time (after appearing previously in 2012 and 2015), nearly seven years since their last headlining hometown performance. On Saturday afternoon, Monster Energy Aftershock performers and special guests also came together to pay tribute to the late Vinnie Paul, who had been scheduled to play Aftershock with his band Hellyeah before his unexpected passing in June. Hosted and curated by SiriusXM’s Jose Mangin, and anchored by Hellyeah’s Kyle Sanders on bass and KYNG’s Pepe Clarke playing Vinnie Paul’s own Hellyeah drum kit, the tribute featured a revolving cast of guitarists and vocalists playing songs from Damageplan and Pantera. -
