April 8, 2012 Easter 10/16/11—061 St. Luke—page 2 October 16, 2011 Dear Parishioners, I ask you to recall the Year 2005 when St. Luke’s recalled for the entire year its 100th Anniversary—a year of Remembrance and Celebration for the founders of this great parish and all those who have helped it grow and kept it strong for those years and now for the years that have followed. I mention this because this year Priests and Brothers are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of their foundation. In 1911 the United States had recently been removed from the list of mission receiving coun- tries to those that could be mission sending countries because we were growing so rapidly. The “Catholic For- eign Mission Society of America” (the formal name) was founded by Father James Walsh and Father Thomas Price headquartered in Ossining, NY. The first missioners actually went to China in 1918. The Maryknoll Sis- ters were founded in 1912 by Mary Josephine Rogers for the same purpose. In 1975 Maryknoll Lay Missioners were formally established although they had been working informally with Maryknoll since the 1930’s. Today Maryknoll Priests, Brothers, Sisters and Lay Missioners are working throughout the world. Next weekend the Church asks us to celebrate World Mission Sunday. This weekend we welcome Brother John Blazo, a Maryknoll Brother who will share with us the nature of mission in the world today. We welcome Brother Blazo and thank him for his work in the missions. Next week will be the Second Collection for World Mission Sunday. Please be generous. This week is always a special time at St. Luke’s. This year as we celebrate our Annual Forty Hours we also celebrate the Feast of St. Luke. We welcome Father Jack Kolodziej, an of St. Francis de Sales, from Fa- ther Judge High School as our Forty Hours speaker. Sunday and Monday evening we will have Evening Prayer and a Homily and Tuesday evening a Closing Mass and homily. All Services will begin at 7:30. Tuesday is also the Feast of St. Luke. Our School children will celebrate the Living Rosary and have a treat Tuesday afternoon. Plan to make these days special for your family as well. At Sunday’s 11:30 Mass, in addition to the Opening of Forty Hours, we will install the Pastoral Council for this year. Please take note of their names in this week’s bulletin and speak to them if you have observations or concerns about the Parish. On Tuesday at the close of Forty Hours we will commission new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and bless all our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who are a big help at church, visiting the homebound and taking communion to Abington Hospital on Sundays. This is an important ministry in the Church. Following up on last week’s October Count report there was a slight improvement this past weekend: 2006-1,741 2007-1,831 2008-1,731 2009-1,577 2010-1,409 2011-1,397 I would be most happy to hear any insights you may have on these declines. I was very grateful to receive a phone call this week from a parishioner who shared honestly some thoughts. By phone or in writing I’d like to hear from you—no anonymous messages please.

Finally this week I will make my last home visitations for this year. I thank those who arranged to be home and all those who welcomed me. I regret it was such a small part of the parish but will continue each year to visit sections of the parish. (Please note that Monday I will be visiting Brooke Road earlier: 2:00 - 4:00 if you can be available.) Enjoy this beautiful week and let us continue to pray for each other. Through St. Luke’s intercession may the faith and service of this beautiful parish continue to grow and spread the Kingdom of God. St. Luke, pray for us.
