WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Nerthus, that is, Mother Earth “Tacitus’ much-quoted account in Germania ch. 40 of the ceremonies related to the goddess Nerthus in the area around Schleswig-Holstein or Jylland is of particular interest here for several reasons. First of all, it suggests that the images of the Bronze Age petroglyphs depicting the hieros gamos and processions related to a fertility deity had parallels in southern Scandinavia as late as AD 100, when Tacitus wrote his account. Secondly, it provides the first reliable evidence that the ceremonies were now associated with a named goddess, who must therefore have had her own mythology and background. This in turn implies that enacted rituals to do with the goddess probably had a mythological parallel.” —Terry Gunnell, The Origins of Drama in Scandinavia, (1995), p.53. In literature, Terra Mater (Mother Earth) first appears as a distinct figure of the old heathen religion in the Germania. Despite intense scholarly debate over the motivations of its author, Germania, written by the Roman historian Tacitus around 98 AD, was probably intended as an accurate account of the customs and conditions of the Germanic tribes who posed a threat on the northern border of the Roman Empire for several hundred years. While his moral observations of the Germanic tribes in contrast to the Roman way of life have led some scholars to propose that this was his chief aim in writing it, this is not sufficient as a general interpretation of the text.1 Not only does Tacitus criticize the Germanic way of life almost as often as he praises it, but much of the material has nothing to do with moral issues and cannot be explained simply as filler. -

Simultaneously Germanic warrior, pagan demi-goddess or supernatural figure, and Christian saint, Judith arbitrates amongst the seemingly incompatible forces that shaped the poet’s world, allowing the poem to serve as an important site for the making of a new Anglo-Saxon identity, one which would eventually come to be the united English identity. She becomes a single figure who is able to reconcile these opposing forces within herself and thereby does important cultural work for the world for which the poem was written. -

REMINISCENCES IN THE POPULAR TRADITIONS OF THE MIDDLE AGES OF THE HEATHEN MIGRATION SAGA. 15. THE LONGOBARDIAN MIGRATION SAGA. What there still remains of migration sagas from the Middle Ages, taken from the saga-treasure of the Teutons themselves, is, unfortunately not much. Among the Franks the stream of national traditions early dried up, at least among the class possessing Latin culture. Among the Longobardians, it fared better and, among them, Christianity was introduced later. Within the scope of Roman history, they appear in the first century after Christ, when Tiberius invaded their boundaries. Tacitus speaks of them with admiration as a small people whose paucity, he says, was balanced by their unity and warlike virtues, which rendered them secure in the midst of the numerous and mighty tribes around them. The Longobardians dwelt at that time in the most northern part of Germany, on the lower Elbe, probably in Luneburg. Five hundred years later, we find them as rulers in Pannonia, whence they invade Italy. They had then been converted to Christianity. A hundred years after they had become settled in North Italy, one of their Latin scholars wrote a little treatise, De Origine Longobardorum, which begins in the following manner: "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, here begins the oldest history of our Longobardian people. There is an island called Skadan, far in the north. There dwelt many peoples. Among them was a little people called the Vinnilians, and among the Vinnilians was a woman by name Gambara. -

Beverly, Jr. 2014 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Since the beginning of Beowulf scholarship, much debate has been given to whether the poet emphasizes the paganism of his pre-Christian characters, or the Christianity practiced by himself and his audience. Proponents for each stance have given sound arguments, often through comparing Beowulf to other works of heroic Germanic literature, particularly Icelandic sagas and Eddic poetry. In this thesis, I, myself compare Beowulf to works such as Volsunga Saga, Hrolfssaga Kraka and Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda. As I acknowledge and expand on prior scholarship, I argue that the Beowulf poet portrays pre-Christian Germanic society as one accommodated within his own, by showing how the poet develops his hero according to virtues from the pre-Christian past, and which were still celebrated by his contemporary audience. -

It was a belief system that was integrated into the culture and based on oral stories and general practices more than a ritualized system of worship. The recorded Norse myths were not written until after the conversion to Christianity, so influence from the new religion can be interpreted in the stories; nonetheless, one can also ascertain the important elements of the mythology from said tales. The religion of the Teutonic people reflected their lives and lifestyles. The way of life for the Germanic people was and still is integrated into the character of their culture. When Christianity came to be accepted in the area, the Teutons did not fully give in to the values imposed by the church, but instead created a Germanic version of Christianity that maintained some ofthe Norse people's core values. An original version of Christianity arose in the North that found itself often in conflict with the Roman Church. The character of the Scandinavians, seen in their heathen religion, permeated and reshaped Christianity until it reached the Protestantism that is known today.
