Avant de devenir compositeur, Moondog a erré dans les rues de New-York pendant une vingtaine d’années. Ami de compositeurs tels que Steve Reich, ou encore Ph. Glass, Moondog est vite devenu un véritable gourou pour toute une partie de mélomanes. Se positionnant à la frontière entre la musique dite « savante » (terme qu’il fustigeait particulièrement !), et la musique dite « populaire » (dont il s’inspire largement), Moondog est l’un des premiers (et seul !) compositeurs à transcender en permanence les genres musicaux. Eléments de biographie de « Moondog » / Source : Wikipédia En 1932, un bâton de dynamite lui explose au visage et l'aveugle de manière permanente2. Il fréquente alors l'école pour aveugles de l'Iowa où il apprend le violon, le piano et l'orgue. Son professeur, Burnet Tuthill, lui donne aussi des cours de musique et d'harmonie. En 1943, il obtient une bourse et part étudier la musique à Memphis. L'année suivante, il se rend à New-York où il passera les trente années suivantes de sa vie. Il fait la connaissance du compositeur et chef d'orchestre Leonard Bernstein et du chef d'orchestre Arturo Toscanini, il fréquente également des musiciens de jazz brillants comme Charlie Parker et Benny Goodman. Il assiste pendant un temps aux répétitions de l'Orchestre Philharmonique de New York, mais son style vestimentaire extravagant le coupe peu à peu du monde de la musique « sérieuse ». À l'époque, sa barbe et ses longs cheveux sont la cause d'un rapprochement avec le Christ qui ne lui convient pas. Il décide de ne plus porter que des vêtements qu'il fabrique lui-même, notamment une cape et un casque de viking inspiré par le dieu nordique Thor. Il commence à composer et décide, en 1947, de se faire appeler « Moondog »3. À l'automne 1949, il commence à jouer dans la rue, le succès est tel que la foule encombre la rue, l'obligeant à se déplacer. Il finit par s'installer dans le quartier des clubs de jazz sur la 6e avenue4. C'est à cette époque que ses vêtements atypiques et sa présence à cet endroit lui vaudront le surnom de « Viking de la 6e avenue ». Les ambiances de la ville seront intégrées aux morceaux du disque On The Streets of New York (1953) avec des compositions de cette période. En 1974, il est invité à donner un concert à Francfort et découvre l'Allemagne. Il se sent alors plus proche intellectuellement de l'Europe que des États-Unis et décide de s'installer en Allemagne. Une étudiante en géologie, Ilona Goebel, fait sa connaissance dans les rues de Recklinghausen, une petite ville de la région de Cologne. Intriguée elle apprend rapidement qu'il est compositeur et décide de l'héberger chez ses parents à Oer-Erkenschwick puis à Münster en Westphalie. C'est là que Moondog passera le reste de sa vie. 3 Le talent de ce musicien atypique et marginal fut reconnu tardivement. Un de ses titres connaîtra une célébrité posthume, Bird's lament, un hommage au musicien de jazz Charlie Parker surnommé « Bird », devenu l'échantillon sonore ("sample") du célèbre Get a move on du DJ anglais Mr Scruff. Style de composition L'œuvre de Moondog en fait l'un des grands maîtres du contrepoint au XXe siècle, ce qui a priori pourrait sembler incongru, le contrepoint, le canon et la fugue étant réputés être des procédés d'écriture historiques, voire archaïques. Au début de sa carrière, Moondog était un musicien de jazz un peu farfelu qui a tenté d'ajouter quelqu'influences amérindiennes aux rythmes afro- américains qui sont le corps traditionnel du jazz. Mais il a peu à peu, selon ses propres dires[réf. nécessaire], voulu réemployer les techniques d'écriture classiques : le contrepoint, l'harmonie et la sévérité des règles traditionnelles. Il s'est ingénié à les respecter plus scrupuleusement même que les grands classiques. Techniquement, Moondog est ainsi plus proche de Palestrina et de Monteverdi que de Bach. Cette volonté pour un compositeur de jazz d'assimiler le savoir-faire classique le rapproche à certains égard de Scott Joplin, dont la technique, bien qu'il appartînt au style "Ragtime", était influencée par l'enseignement allemand traditionnel de la musique et le traité de contrepoint de Salomon Jadassohn5. Moondog a combiné les rythmes du jazz et des procédés extrêmement contraignants comme le canon et le contrepoint renversable à deux, trois, quatre ou cinq voix. Il emploie aussi, assez fréquemment, des mesures à 7/8, 5/4 et autres rythmes impairs. Ses compositions ne laissent aucune place à l'improvisation, chaque partie étant écrite avec précision. Certaines de ses compositions, comme par exemple Do Your Thing (H´art Songs, 1978 ; édition CD Kopf / Roof Music), peuvent sembler simples et répétitives à la première écoute, avant que ne se révèle une richesse rythmique et contrapuntique étonnante et une imagination mélodique inépuisable. En dépit de son amitié avec Steve Reich et Phil Glass, sa musique n'a que peu de rapport avec le courant de la musique répétitive, dont il nie faire partie. Il a écrit d'innombrables pièces pour orchestre, en général écrites en « parties réelles » (c'est-à-dire qu'il n'y a presque pas de doublure ni d'unisson, chaque pupitre étant une partie contrapuntique). Il affectionne particulièrement les saxophones, le morceau Lament (Moondog, LP Columbia Masterworks MS 7335, 1969) en étant un exemple poignant. 4 Biographie du groupe « Cabaret Contemporain» Le Cabaret Contemporain est un groupe de musiciens qui réinventent leurs instruments en développant un langage et une syntaxe originale, des techniques et modes de jeu inédits. Ces musiciens qui ont traversé plusieurs genres musicaux, de la musique contemporaine a la techno, du minimalisme au rock a la musique improvisée, développent un langage commun que transforme les sons de chaque dans un véritable et homogène son de groupe. En réinventant également un nouveau rapport interprète/compositeur, musique écrite/musique improvisée, les musiciens du Cabaret Contemporain font entendre une musique éclectique, indépendante qui est capable de parler aux grand public grâce a son pluralisme d'influences et de langages. Pour que la musique dite « contemporaine » retrouve l’idée de « plaisir », nous tentons de mettre en place une approche désinhibée et simple à la musique et sans aucun restriction stylistique. Le Cabaret Contemporain a déjà joué à la Cité de la musique, à la Gaîté Lyrique, au Lieu Unique à Nantes, au festival Musica à Strasbourg, aux « Nuits Sonores » à Lyon, au Centre Pompidou à Metz, à New-York avec Steve Reich, à Londres etc 5 .

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself.     ! MOONDOG, DÉDALUS & MUZZIX ROUND THE WORLD OF SOUND NEW WORLD RECORDS, CD, 80774-2 – 2016 Nous sommes bien étranges, dans cette revue... En 1994, le compositeur Moon- dog (1916-1999) ne jouissait pas encore de ce succès revival qu’il connaît au- jourd’hui. Il était surtout une icône pour musiciens tels Frank Zappa, Janis Joplin, Tom Waits, Jimmy Mc Griff, Charlie Parker ou Stéphane Eicher. Pourtant, dans le n°22 de décembre 1994, Laurent Jullier écrivait un article sur Moondog; Philippe Robert fit de même dans le n°64 de juin 2005 ; puis des livres sur lui ont été chroniqués ; mais personne n’a encore chroniqué ce CD, qui en raconte long aux oreilles sur ce compositeur. Peut-être parce que certains musiciens participant à ce projet sont d’éminents membres de la revue : Barbara Dang est responsable de publication, et Didier Aschour membre du comité de rédaction. Ceci d’ailleurs tendrait à prouver une cer- taine cohérence artistique des membres de la revue. Faut- il peut-être y voir aussi une extrême délicatesse, les rédacteurs préférant partager ce qui est « autre »... Ce projet Moondog réunit l’ensemble Dédalus, spécialisé depuis 20 ans dans l’interprétation du répertoire minima- liste américain – cette musique contem- poraine expérimentale, comme aime à le dire son directeur artistique Didier Aschour – et certains membres du collec- tif lillois Muzzix. Avec Didier Aschour, Christian Pruvost a codirigé cet ensemble de 14 musicien(ne)s talentueux(ses) réu- nis pour ce disque. Notons la présence exceptionnelle de l’éclectique Nathalie Duong au chant : rien que pour elle ce disque mérite de trouver sa place dans toute discothèque digne de ce nom ; et toujours au chant, et c’est surprenant, Deborah Walker, que nous connaissons surtout comme brillantissime violoncel- liste.

    ! ! ! The University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios present ! Fall Concert! 2014 Chimespace is a combination of two principal ideas: the ringing of bells and the area in which these Lawrence Fritts, Director sounds are heard. My source material derives from recordings of table bells and handbells that are part of my personal collection. In this composition I explore the relationship between the !onset of a bell and its decay and how that sound envelops the listener. Jonathan Wilson is a second-year doctoral student studying music composition with David Gompper at the University of Iowa. Jonathan received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in music composition from Western Illinois University. He has studied with Lawrence Fritts, James Romig, James Caldwell, Paul Paccione, and John Cooper. His compositional process tends to follow a concept-oriented approach, which generates the structural ideas for his works. Jonathan is a member of the Society of Composers, Inc., SEAMUS, the Iowa Composers Forum, and the American Composers Forum. ! IC1223 is a sound installation located in the lobby of the Becker Communication Studies Building. The installation explores two different soundscapes in Iowa City; sounds of the day from 1-2 PM, and the very early morning, 2-3 AM. Four computers process gathered field recordings to reveal the many different types of sounds contained in the overall soundscape. Part 1 started before tonight’s concert began, and was a transition from Night to Day. Part 2 will begin immediately after the penultimate !piece, and will transition from Day to Night recordings. Called 50 Couplets, the 40 page bilingual pamphlet includes the original English and French translations of Moondog’s words of wisdom, which he typically expressed in two line rhymes. “I discovered Moondog’s poetry for the first time by listening to his first recordings, especially More Moondog, which contains the “Moondog Monologue”,” says Lenka Lente’s Guillaume Belhomme via email. “I found more about his poetry on Moondog’s Corner, the great website run by Wolfgang Gnida, including the original version of 50 Couplets, and I thought it would be great to translate it into French.” Moondog’s 50 Couplets is the latest in Lenka Lente’s series of French language texts of 20th century avant garde writings, which ranges from Italian futurist Francesco Balilla Pratella to US saxophone pioneer Jackie McLean.
