In agroecosystems, pollination and control of crop pests provide benefits worth billions of dollars annually. Effective sampling and monitoring of these beneficial arthropods is essential for ensuring their short- and long-term viability and effectiveness. There are numerous methods available for sampling beneficial arthropods in a variety of habitats, and these methods can vary in efficiency and effectiveness. In this paper I review active and passive sampling methods for non-Apis bees and arthropod natural enemies of agricultural pests, including methods for sampling flying insects, arthropods on vegetation and in soil and litter environments, and estimation of predation and parasitism rates. Sample sizes, lethal sampling, and the potential usefulness of bycatch are also discussed. Introduction To sustainably use the Earth’s resources for our benefit, it is essential that we understand the ecology of human-altered systems and the organisms that inhabit them. Agroecosystems include agricultural activities plus living and nonliving components that interact with these activities in a variety of ways. Beneficial arthropods, such as pollinators of crops and natural enemies of arthropod pests and weeds, play important roles in the economic and ecological success of agroecosystems. -

In general, areas with more vegetation cover have greater abundance and diversity of these bees. This study investigated the effects of forest fragmentation on assemblages of the euglossine bees in the region of Rio Branco municipality, State of Acre, and surrounding areas. Ten forest fragments with varying sizes were selected for the study and were classified as urban or rural. The bees were sampled between December 2005 and August 2006. A total of 3,675 bees in 36 species and 4 genera were collected. In general abundance and richness of bees did not differ statistically between urban and rural fragments. The index of edge in fragments was a predictor of richness and diversity of bees. The connectivity estimated was also an adequate predictor for richness. Fragments with greater similarity in relation to their landscape structure were also more similar in relation to faunal composition. -

This study was carried out with cultivated Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl., Lecythidaceae) in the Central Amazon rainforest, Brazil, aiming to learn about its pollination requirements, to know the floral visitors of Brazil nut flowers, to investigate their foraging behavior and to determine the main floral visitors of this plant species in commercial plantations. Results showed that B. excelsa is predominantly allogamous, but capable of setting fruits by geitonogamy. Nineteen bee species, belonging to two families, visited and collected nectar and/or pollen throughout the day, although the number of bees decreases steeply after 1000 HR. -

However, studies on the diversity of arboreal ants are less frequent in the Amazon. In this paper we list arboreal ant species sampled in understory along four transects in a forest remnant in a South Amazonian landscape. The list includes 32 species, of which three (9 %) are new records for the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, one of these species being sampled for the first time in Brazil. Key words. Amazon, biodiversity, arboreal ants, Formicidae, neotropical region RESUMEN Las hormigas habitan y explotan los hábitats más variados desde el subsuelo hasta el dosel del bosque. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre la diversidad de hormigas de la vegetación son menos frecuentes en el Amazonas. En este artículo enumeramos las especies de hormigas recogidas en el sotobosque de un remanente de bosque en un paisaje del sur de la Amazonia. -

Nov.-19 UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE TUMBES FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS AGRARIAS ESCUELA PROFESIONAL DE AGRONOMIA ESPECIES DE EUGLOSSINI (Hymenoptera: Apidae) DEPOSITADAS EN EL MUSEO DE ENTOMOLOGIA - UNTUMBES • Carolina Del Pilar Pisco Espinoza • Pedro Saúl Castillo Carrillo • Jorge Luis Purizaga Preciado INTRODUCCIÓN • La importancia del estudio de los insectos radica a que algunas especies se le atribuyen las grandes pérdidas que ocasionan en la agricultura. • Otros son benéficos para la humanidad, porque intervienen en la polinización de las plantas y otros que actúan como entomófagos. • Sin embargo, actualmente tanto los polinizadores como los entomófagos vienen siendo afectados por el excesivo uso de agroquímicos aplicados en los campos de cultivos. • En tal sentido es necesario el reconocimiento de la biodiversidad de especies de EUGLOSSINI (Hymenoptera: Apidae) insectos benéficos que presentes en nuestros agroecosistemas y ecosistemas naturales y que se encuentran en este caso registrados y depositados en el Museo de Entomología de la Universidad Nacional de Tumbes. 1 Nov.-19 OBJETIVO Identificar y registrar los ejemplares de Euglossini (Hymenoptera: Apidae), presentes en el Museo de Entomología de la Universidad Nacional de Tumbes, Perú. EUGLOSSINI DISTRIBUCIÓN Y NÚMERO DE ESPECIES • Las abejas de las orquídeas son insectos de colores llamativos distribuidos únicamente en el Neotropico (desde Mexico hasta el norte de Argentina). • Se agrupan en la tribu de EUGLOSSINI, dentro de la Familia Apidae, la cual incluye todas las abejas. Al contrario que otros miembros de su familia, como las abejas domésticas, las abejas de las orquídeas son generalmente solitarias. • Hay aproximadamente 200 especies de abejas de las orquídeas, clasificadas en cinco géneros: Aglae, Exaerete, Eulaema, Eufriesea y Euglosa. -

Tubaro Consejero de estudios: Dr. Daniel Roccatagliata Lugar de trabajo: División de Ornitología, Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia” Buenos Aires, Marzo 2018 Fecha de defensa: 27 de Marzo de 2018 Sistemática y ecología de las hormigas predadoras (Formicidae: Ponerinae) de la Argentina Resumen Las hormigas son uno de los grupos de insectos más abundantes en los ecosistemas terrestres, siendo sus actividades, muy importantes para el ecosistema. En esta tesis se estudiaron de forma integral la sistemática y ecología de una subfamilia de hormigas, las ponerinas. Esta subfamilia predomina en regiones tropicales y neotropicales, estando presente en Argentina desde el norte hasta la provincia de Buenos Aires. Se utilizó un enfoque integrador, combinando análisis genéticos con morfológicos para estudiar su diversidad, en combinación con estudios ecológicos y comportamentales para estudiar la dominancia, estructura de la comunidad y posición trófica de las Ponerinas. Los resultados sugieren que la diversidad es más alta de lo que se creía, tanto por que se encontraron nuevos registros durante la colecta de nuevo material, como porque nuestros análisis sugieren la presencia de especies crípticas. Adicionalmente, demostramos que en el PN Iguazú, dos ponerinas: Dinoponera australis y Pachycondyla striata son componentes dominantes en la comunidad de hormigas. Análisis de isótopos estables revelaron que la mayoría de las Ponerinas ocupan niveles tróficos altos, con excepción de algunas especies arborícolas del género Neoponera que dependerían de néctar u otros recursos vegetales. -

Informed by phylogenetic results from thousands of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and mitochondrial DNA barcodes, we revise the genus, providing a new morphological diagnosis and a species-level treatment. Analysis of UCE data from many Rasopone samples and select outgroups revealed non-monophyly of the genus. Monophyly of Rasopone was restored by transferring several species to the unrelated genus Mayaponera Schmidt and Shattuck. Within Rasopone, species are morphologically very similar, and we provide a ‘bird guide’ approach to identification rather than the traditional dichotomous key. Species are arranged by size in a table, along with geographic range and standard images. Additional diagnostic information is then provided in individual species accounts. We recognize a total of 15 named species, of which the following are described as new species: R. costaricensis, R. cryptergates, R. cubitalis, R. guatemalensis, R. mesoamericana, R. pluviselva, R. politognatha, R. subcubitalis, and R. titanis. An additional 12 morphospecies are described but not for- mally named due to insufficient material. -
