    1 The TENORSAX of GEORGE HOLMES TATE “BUDDY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Jan. 4, 2020 2 Born: Sherman, Texas, Feb. 22, 1914 Died: Chandler, Arizona, Feb. 10, 2001 Introduction: We became familiar with Buddy Tate very early through his recordings with Count Basie. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

Incredible how such a good musician can be almost forgotten! During the year 1944 he made more beautiful soli on his instrument than most challengers do in a lifetime! Early history: Clarinet from an early age, also studied guitar and saxophone. Worked with local bands from 1928, then worked with the “family” trio. Long spell with brother Emilio’s small band including residencies in Detroit and New York. Joined Bobby Hackett in summer of 1938, played tenorsax in Jack Teagarden’s band from February 1939. Briefly in big band led by Bob Zurke, then with Glenn Miller from February 1940 until summer of 1942. With Johnny Long’s band from March 1943, with Benny Goodman in October 1943. Joined Tommy Dorsey in December 1943. Worked with Benny Goodman and Woody Herman in 1944, U.S. Army service from spring 1945. Took part in many recordings with Eddie Condon alumni during the 1940s and 1950s (ref. John Chilton). Message: I am very sorry I did not realize how fine a clarinet player EC was!     Discography of the Riverside Label The Riverside label was established in 1953 by traditional jazz enthusiasts Bill Grauer and Orrin Keepnews in New York City. Originally Grauer and Keepnews intended to reissue classic jazz that they purchased from long defunct labels. Later the label recorded jazz, folk, comedy, spoken word, sound effects, children’s and gospel. Shortly after starting the Riverside label, Grauer went to Richmond Indiana, to see Harry Gennett Jr. to try to purchase the recordings of the Gennett label. The Gennett Record label was formed in 1918 as a division of the Starr Piano Company in Richmond Indiana. In the early 20’s, the label started recording the early jazz bands that were performing in Chicago. Gennett made the first recordings of Ferd “Jellyroll” Morton, King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band with Louis Armstrong and the Wolverines with Bix Beiderecke. The first recording of “Stardust” was made by its author Hoagy Carmichael in the Gennett Richmond studio The Gennett label had ceased operation in 1932, but many of the historic metal recording plates were still stored in Richmond. Grauer was able to purchase all of the remaining plates for $2000. Grauer began a massive reissue campaign, releasing much of the Gennett material on long playing albums for the first time. Later, Grauer obtained masters from other early jazz and blues labels, including Paramount, Circle, and QRS, and reissued that material. Although the early catalog of Riverside releases contained mostly purchased material, Riverside started recording jazz sessions on its own, including Thelonious Monk, Randy Weston, Wes Montgomery and Cannonball Adderley.
