    Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: The Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977 Allen MCCLYMONT A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Kingston University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Submitted June 2021 ABSTRACT The rise of communism in China began a chain of events which eventually led to the largest influx of Protestant missionaries into Malaya and Singapore in their history. During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), a key part of the British Government’s strategy to defeat communist insurgents was the relocation of more than 580,000 predominantly Chinese rural migrants into what became known as the ‘New Villages’. This thesis examines the response of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), as a representative of the Protestant missionary enterprise, to an invitation from the Government to serve in the New Villages. It focuses on the period between their arrival in 1952 and 1977, when the majority of missionaries had left the country, and assesses how successful the OMF was in fulfilling its own expectation and those of the Government that invited them. It concludes that in seeking to fulfil Government expectation, residential missionaries were an influential presence, a presence which contributed to the ongoing viability of the New Villages after their establishment and beyond Independence. It challenges the portrayal of Protestant missionaries as cultural imperialists as an outdated paradigm with which to assess their role. By living in the New Villages under the same restrictions as everyone else, missionaries unconsciously became conduits of Western culture and ideas. At the same time, through learning local languages and supporting indigenous agency, they encouraged New Village inhabitants to adapt to Malaysian society, while also retaining their Chinese identity.

    Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order Communiqué 2019 The Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order (IASCUFO) held its annual residential meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the Province of South-East Asia from 6 to 11 December 2019. This was the last meeting of IASCUFO under its current mandate. The Commission was hosted by the Diocese of West Malaysia and is grateful to the Most Revd Datuk Ng Moon Hing, Bishop of the Diocese of West Malaysia and Archbishop and Primate of the Province of South East Asia, and to The Revd Canon Dr Steven Abbarow, Acting Principal of Seminari Theoloji Malaysia and member of the Commission, Mrs Anne Abbarow and Mrs Maria Thomas for their generous hospitality. Members of the Commission were pleased to join in Sunday worship at the Cathedral of St Mary; All Souls’ Church, Sri Hartamas; Holy Trinity, Bukit Bintang; and St Paul’s Church, Petaling Jaya. The Commission’s work was sustained by daily prayer and celebration of the Eucharist. IASCUFO’s mandate defines and directs its work. The Commission has responsibility: to promote the deepening of Communion between the Churches of the Anglican Communion, and between those Churches and the other churches and traditions of the Christian oikumene; to advise the Provinces and the Instruments of Communion on all questions of ecumenical engagement, proposals for national, regional or international ecumenical agreement or schemes of co-operation and unity, as well as on questions touching Anglican Faith and Order; to review developments in the areas of faith, order or unity in the Anglican Communion and among ecumenical partners, and to give advice to the Churches of the Anglican Communion or to the Instruments of Communion upon them, with the intention to promote common understanding, consistency, and convergence both in Anglican Communion affairs, and in ecumenical engagement; to assist any Province with the assessment of new proposals in the areas of Unity, Faith and Order as requested.

    Transformation and Tradition in Global Mission Missions Organisations Conference, Cyprus 12-18 February 2003 Mission leaders experience 'beautiful solidarity in diversity' By Margaret S Larom In six intense days bracketed by 2000 years of Christian history, Anglicans from throughout the world explored the interlocking nature of continuity, change and context during a mission conference set in Cyprus, an island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The aim of the conference, entitled 'Transformation and Tradition in Global Mission,' was 'to explore new dimensions of our common mission.' By the end of their time together, approximately 110 men and women from 40 countries had recognised anew that the mission is God's, and that the Anglican Communion is uniquely qualified to serve that mission, if it uses the gifts God has given every member. In the view of the Rt. Rev. Jubal Neves, bishop of Southwestern Brazil, the event demonstrated a new incarnational approach to mission -- a 'beautiful solidarity in diversity.' Representing mission agencies, boards, and movements in most of the provinces of the Anglican Communion, they also represented every order in the church (bishop, clergy, laity, and religious). There were seminary deans and professors, provincial or diocesan staff members, voluntary agency executive directors and area secretaries, heads of special ministries and members of religious orders. There were members of the Anglican Consultative Council, the Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Mission and Evangelism, and various official Anglican networks. There were church leaders who work essentially alone, among indigenous people or different faith groups, and others who function in complicated bureaucracies. More than half the group was ordained.

    Intentional Discipleship: ID:JSL Bulletin Jesus Shaped Life Issue1 November 2020 Introducing Intentional Discipleship Welcome to this first issue of the Intentional Discipleship: Jesus Shaped Life (ID:JSL ) Bulletin from the Anglican Communion’s Intentional Discipleship Co-ordinating Group. In 2016 the Anglican Consultative Council called “every Province, Diocese and Parish in the Anglican Communion to adopt a clear focus on intentional discipleship and disciple-making”. Why Intentional? Because, as Archbishop Justin Welby has observed: ‘If you do not do something intentionally, you probably do not do it at all!’ The Bulletin will share good news, ideas, resources and good practice to promote this intentional discipleship. This learning will come from across the whole Anglican Communion. Your ideas, experience and resources are welcome: simply send them to us. Our goal is a change in culture to one that promotes the centrality to Anglican identity of a whole life discipleship . Biblical insights to encourage individual Christians will be shared and challenging questions asked of leaders, Churches, Colleges and other Institutions.
