Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

Buckthorn and garlic mustard are invasive species of highest priority for development of long- term management solutions, such as biological control (bio-control). This research aimed to help determine 1) if there are suitable insects that can be used to reduce impacts caused by buckthorn and 2) to implement introduction of insects to control garlic mustard and assess their establishment and success. Buckthorn. Insects were collected and reared for carrying out host specificity testing. A total of 1,733 specimens (356 species) were collected from buckthorn infestations in this insect fauna survey. In total, 39 specialized arthopods were recorded from R. cathartica (common buckthorn) and F. alnus (glossy buckthorn) in Europe. The reassessment of the potential for biological control of R. cathartica and F. alnus was conducted based on work done in Europe from 2002-2007 on potential biological control agents. -

Langston Kensington, CA November 1999; edited 2009 The following list summarizes observations of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California, during 1995-1999. Data originate from about 75 daytime and crepuscular visits of 0.5 to 3.5 hrs, in all months of the year. All of the butterfly species and some of the moths were recorded by RLL, most of the moth species and their larval host plants by JAP. A total of 145 species is recorded (30 butterflies, 115 moths), a modest number considering the extent and diversity of the flora. However, many of the potential larval host plants may be present in too small patches to support populations of larger moths or butterflies. Nonetheless, we were surprised that colonies of some of the species survive in a small area that has been surrounded by urban development for many decades, including some rare ones in the East Bay region, as annotated below. Moreover, the inventory is incomplete. A more comprehensive census would be accomplished by trapping moths attracted to ultraviolet lights. In a habitat of this size, however, such survey would attract an unknown proportion of species from surrounding areas. Larval collections are indicated by date-based JAP lot numbers (e.g. 95C37 = 1995, March, 37th collection). Larval foods of most of the other species are documented in other populations. Host plants are recorded at Albany Hill for 75 species (65% of the moths, 52% of the total); the rest were observed as adults only. -

(Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae, Gracillariinae) is described as a new species from New Zealand. It is regarded as endemic, and represents the first record of its genus from the southern hemisphere. Though diverging in some morphological features from previously de- scribed species, it is placed in genus Sabulopteryx Triberti, based on wing venation, abdominal characters, male and female genitalia and hostplant choice; this placement is supported by phylogenetic analysis based on the COI mitochondrial gene. -

C. semifascia is normally univoltine in the British Isles but bivoltine populations are now spreading in southern counties. Zusammenfassung. Novel Aspects of Host Tree Resistance to Leafminers
NOVEL ASPECTS OF HOST TREE RESISTANCE TO LEAFMINERS STANLEY H. FAETH Department of Zoology Arizona State University Tempe, AZ 85287 U.S.A. INTRODUCTION At least 10,000 species of leafminers in four orders of insects (Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera) are found worldwide. The common feature of all leafminers is that larvae feed within leaves for at least some larval stages. Larvae of facultative mining species feed internally but also externally as free-feeders, usually in later larval instars. Larvae of obligate mining species feed exclusively, and may also pupate, within leaves (Hering 1951, Powell 1980). Despite wide interspecific variation in life histories, leafminers are generally more closely associated with their feeding substrates than are free-feeding insects (Mattson et al. 1988). This "intimacy" (sensu Mattson et al. 1988) is the primary factor in directing their evolution and influencing population dynamics. For leafminers, as distinct from most freefeeding insects, selection of feeding substrates is determined solely by female oviposition choice, at least for obligate leafminers. Eggs may be cemented to the surface or embedded in the leaf, so adult females determine feeding sites not only among plants but also within leaves. For facultative leafminers, female oviposition choice determines larval feeding sites for at least some larval instars, and female choice generally plays a much larger role in larval feeding sites than it does for most external feeding insects. Confinement to a single leaf means that larvae cannot behaviorally escape deteriorating abiotic or biotic conditions associated with their substrates as agile insect larvae can, though a few species can mine more than one leaf by exiting the mine or mining through the petiole to adjacent leaves. -

Four species recorded by EMBACHER & al. (2011b) and also by HUEMER (2013) had to be eliminated from the catalogue because the speci- mens were misidentified or the records could not be verified. Two species are new for the fauna: Caloptilia populetorum (ZELLER, 1839) and Caloptilia fidella (REUTTI, 1853). (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Lithocolletinae Stainton, 1854) is described to ac- commodate two species formerly assigned to the genus Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822: Triberta helianthemella (Herrich- Schäffer, 1861) comb. nov. and T. cistifoliella (Groschke, 1944) comb. nov. Triberta cistifoliella bona sp. is restored from synonymy based on morphological characters. The new genus is biologically associated with the plant family Cistaceae of the order Malvales and is endemic to the Palaearctics. Our molecular analysis of eleven nuclear genes failed to unambiguously place Triberta in the lithocolletine phylogeny, but revealed that this genus is distinct from either clade Phyllonorycter + Cremastobombycia and Cameraria.
