  • LOVE BIRDS (102 Min) Directed by Paul Murphy Starring Rhys Darby, Sally Hawkins, Emily Barclay
REVIEW: THE LOVE BIRDS (102 min) Directed by Paul Murphy Starring Rhys Darby, Sally Hawkins, Emily Barclay After playing wingman to Flight of the Conchords and salesman for many others (as well as appearances in Jim Carrey's Yes Man and Brit comedy The Boat That Rocked), Rhys Darby finally gets a film to call his own. While his post-Murray screen career has largely depended on his FOTC role or his manic stand-up persona, here, he's the straight guy in a very straight movie. Though the film gives him a lame, if very cute, duck as a sidekick, chirpy goofy English actress Sally Hawkins as a love interest and a Queen soundtrack which does threaten to turn this into We Will Rock You: The Movie. But the songs generate some of the biggest laughs in what is an endearingly funny, if sugar-coated local romantic comedy. And one which seems to have a surfeit of supporting characters, and a weak opening among its flaws. Oh and some intrusive product placement. It is a very nice advertisement for Auckland too, though it might be best to see it outside the city where your fellow cinema patrons aren't cooing "'oooh look Northcote" to each other. And in one memorable scene it puts a fine case for a cycle lane on the harbour bridge. With his various comic foils, web-footed and otherwise, it allows Darby to restrain himself and carry the film as its romantic lead, one who doesn't have much in common with Hugh Grant, as has been the film's sales pitch, but whoe resembles a distant cousin to Hugh Jackman.

And where do we come from? Australia’s greatest Olympian Ian Thorpe, iconic Indigenous actor Ernie Dingo, and TV presenter and Queen of Eurovision Julia Zemiro set off on an epic journey of genetic time travel to find out. DNA is the instruction manual that helps build and run our bodies. But scientific breakthroughs have discovered another remarkable use for it. DNA contains a series of genetic route maps. It means we can trace our mother’s mother’s mother and our father’s father’s father, and so on, back through tens of millennia, revealing how our ancestors migrated out of Africa and went on to populate the rest of the world.

  • Top Pick Tuesday 21 March 8.30Pm Final
1 Top Pick Tuesday 21 March 8.30pm Final Bullied Hosted by Ian Thorpe, Bullied is a controversial and compelling insight into the issue of school bullying that brings victims and their classmates together in an effort to help understand the impacts of bullying and create strategies for change. Chloe is 16 years old and suffers from a rare genetic disorder that causes her significant physical disability. From birth, her life has been a fight for survival, and she’s battled to be treated the same as any other child. But since starting High School, Chloe has endured relentless verbal and physical bullying. The physical threats especially, have left both Chloe and her parents fearful of her attending school. The consequences of her becoming involved in a fight or a fall could be devastating. Chloe has tried to ignore her bullies, but nothing she has done has helped so far. Even interventions by her parents and the school have failed to alleviate the problem. Living in a remote town, Chloe’s options for an alternative school are limited, and now she’s at risk of having to drop out of formal, school-based education entirely. Now, both Chloe and her parents have decided to take a stand. Her family don’t want to see the bullying behaviour destroy Chloe’s chances for a proper education, so they’ve agreed to allow her to take hidden cameras into school, in an attempt to gather evidence of her bullying. They hope it’ll be a solution to her torment and create a permanent and positive change at the school.

  • Frank Woodley Comedian / Professional Show Off
Frank Woodley Comedian / Professional Show Off After 20 years in the much loved, Perrier Award-winning duo Lano and Woodley, Frank said Good Bye to being one half of a double act in 2006 with a national tour that took in 34 markets and sold more than 125,000 tickets. Since hanging up his hat, Frank has been busier than a bee (bees are allegedly flat out). His smash hit solo show Possessed played across Australia and the Edinburgh Festival with packed houses and rave reviews. In addition, his animated short, Chicken of God, received an AFI nomination and he won the coveted Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe for his role of Candide in the Malthouse Theatre production of Optimism. Frank was also a regular guest on ABC TV’s music quiz show Spicks and Specks and Network TEN’s Good News Week and an audience favourite on Thank God You're Here. Australia’s most visually compelling comedian was never far from the stage – doing live stand up in the unique song singing, limb flinging Woodley way. It was no surprise that Frank’s 2010 solo tour, Bewilderbeest, quickly sold out around the country, firmly cementing him as once of one of Australia’s most-loved comedians. In 2012, Frank was back on stage with his new show Bemusement Park. 2012 also saw the much-anticipated debut of Woodley on ABC TV. Created by, written, produced and starring Frank as the title character opposite Justine Clarke and newcomer Alexandra Cashmere, Woodley is a romantic comedy filled with virtuosic physical mayhem.
