March 30, 2017 7:30 – 8:45 a.m. / Sheraton Seattle Hotel KEYNOTE SPEAKER 2017 4/5 MORRIS DEES INTERNATIONALLY-RENOWNED CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY Southern Poverty Law Center co-founder and chief trial attorney Morris Dees was born in 1936 at Shorter, , the son of cotton farmers. As a young boy he worked those fields, witnessing social and economic deprivation first-hand, and Jim Crow treatment at its worst. Dees first launched a private law practice in 1960, and would win a series of groundbreaking civil rights cases that helped integrate government and public institutions.

Dees would go on to found the SPLC in Montgomery, Alabama in 1971, along with his law partner, Joseph J. Levin, Jr. and the late civil rights leader, . Gaining prominence for innovative lawsuits that would cripple the , and other notorious white supremacist hate groups, Dees would also later serve as the finance director for former Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern in 1972, and for President ’s campaign in 1976.

The author of four books and the subject of a 1991 made-for-TV movie, Dees has been the recipient of more than 20 honorary degrees and numerous awards—including Trial Lawyer of the Year from Trial Lawyers for Public Justice; the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award from the National Education Association; The Salem Award for Human Rights and Social Justice; and the ABA Medal, the ’s highest award for exceptionally distinguished service.

KCBA’s Pro Bono Services strive to ensure that poverty never stands in the way of access to justice for the most vulnerable people in our community. Through our programs, over 1,400 volunteer attorneys in King County work to prevent homeless- ness, secure family safety, and resolve issues that threaten their homes, jobs and family stability. Last year, our Housing Justice Project, Family Law Programs, Neighborhood Legal Clinics and Volunteer Legal Services worked tirelessly to provide help to over 10,000 clients facing serious civil legal challenges that impact their ability to meet even the most basic needs for themselves and for their families. MINORITY LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS KCBF is one of the largest providers of minority law student scholarships in Washington. In 2015-16, KCBF distributed $140,000 in scholarship funds—$70,000 to each school—which were, in turn, offered to 56 minority law school students. Over 900 scholarships and nearly $2.5 million total have been awarded through this program since its inception in 1970, and over half of the scholarship recipients still practice in Washington State.
