Kim Dameron was hired as the 24th head coach in Eastern Illinois football program history on January 10, 2014. He became just the fifth head coach in the NCAA Division I era. Dameron spent the 2013 season as the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech where he directed a much improved defensive unit. The Bulldogs finished ranked 69th in the nation in total defense under Dameron’s direction after being ranked 120th the previous season. Dameron’s defense was the fourth most- improved squad in the FBS last season. An experienced defensive coach with more than 15 years as a defensive coordinator Dameron takes over an Eastern Illinois program that advanced to the FCS playoff quarterfinals last season. It will be Dameron’s second stint in Charleston as he previously worked as the defensive coordinator at EIU in 2000 as a member of head coach Bob Spoo’s staff. During that 2000 season, Dameron helped transform the Panthers defense as they rebounded from a 2-10 season in 1999 to 8-4 and Ohio Valley Conference Champions in 2000. Prior to the 2013 season at Louisiana Tech, Dameron spent two years at Cornell, serving as safeties coach in 2011 and defensive coordinator during the 2012 campaign. In his first season with the Big Red in 2011, Dameron relied on a pair of first-year safeties, Josh Barut and Andrew Nelson, to do a bulk of the work. He helped develop the duo quickly, with both ranking among the top 12 in tackles in Ivy League games in 2011. His young defense was gutted due to injuries, only putting his starting unit on the THE COACH DAMERON FILE field for one complete half all season. He coached first team All-American defensive back William Hampton. Dameron moved on to Cincinnati in 1996 to take a position as the defensive secondary coach. The 1996 squad ranked 13th nationally in total defense and 14th in pass efficiency defense. In 1997, he was promoted to defensive coordinator. The Bearcats won the 1997 Humanitarian Bowl, defeating Utah State. That season the defense was ranked fifth nationally in rushing defense and 33rd in total defense. In 1998, he added special teams and academic liaison duties. Four former Bearcats under Dameron's tutelage went on to the NFL. Dameron and his wife, Debbie, have one daughter, Krystle.
