  • Masculinity, Aging, Illness, and Death in Tombstone and Logan
ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER 791-51 DOI:10.5937/ ZRFFP48-18623 DANIJELA L J. P ETKOVIĆ1 UNIVERSITY OF N IŠ FACULTY OF P HILOSOPHY ENGLISH D EPARTMENT (IM)POSSIBLE MARTYRDOM: MASCULINITY, AGING, ILLNESS, AND DEATH IN TOMBSTONE AND LOGAN ABSTRACT. The title of this paper alludes to Hannah Arendt’s famous claim that in Nazi concentration camps martyrdom was made impossible, for the first time in Western history, by the utter anonymity and meaninglessness of inmates’ deaths (Arendt, 2000, p. 133): the paper, in contrast, examines two contem- porary films which, while intersecting normative/heroic masculinity with debilitating illness and death, allow for the possibility of martyrdom. Tomb- stone and Logan , directed by George P. Cosmatos and James Mangold respectively, depict the last days of such pop culture icons of masculinity as John Henry “Doc” Holliday and James Howlett, aka Logan/Wolverine. The films’ thematic focus on the (protracted) ending of life, which is evident not only in the storylines and dialogues but also in the numerous close-ups of emaciated, bleeding, scarred and prostrate male bodies, afflicted with tuberculosis and cancer-like adamantium poisoning, invites, first, a discus- sion of the relationship between the cinematic representations of normative and disabled masculinities. Specifically, since normative masculinity, as opposed to femininity, is synonymous with physical and mental strength, power and domination – including the control of one’s own body – the focus of this discussion is if, and how, the films depict Doc Holliday and Wolverine as feminized by their failing/disobedient bodies, thus contribut- ing to the cultural construction of gender. Secondly, the paper discusses the halo of martyrdom with which the films’ dying men are rewarded as emo- tionally deeply satisfying to the viewer: in Logan and Tombstone , death is not averted but hastened for the sake of friendship, family, and the protec- tion of the vulnerable and the marginalized.

  • Arizona Euro-American History
Arizona History AZT Passage 17-Alamo Canyon by Preston Sands This passage of the Arizona Trail travels through historic mining country. One of Arizona’s largest silver strikes, the Silver King Mine, occurred in 1875 in the mountains north of this area. As a result, a silver rush of sorts brought in many prospectors and would-be miners, all hoping to cash in on the mineral riches that were surely to be found in the area. One of these men was J. DeNoon Reymert. A lawyer and journalist by trade Reymert founded and published the Pinal Drill, the area’s first newspaper, in the lively boomtown of Pinal during the early 1880’s. Reymert’s best known contribution to the area may have been his discovery of a rich silver mine a couple of miles west of today’s Arizona Trail route. This silver strike became the Reymert Mine, which spawned a large mining camp to support the mine workers, and a secondary mill town nearby, known as DeNoon. While the town of DeNoon was short-lived, the town of Reymert, along with the Reymert Mine, lingered on until the 1950’s, reportedly producing around $700,000 dollars of silver during its lifetime. Reymert is a ghost town today, with abandoned mine workings being the only evidence of its existence. Along the horizon to the east, a massive cliff wall known as Apache Leap towers over the surrounding hills. Apache Leap takes its name from a tragic incident that was said to have taken place atop its rocky crest. While there is no official documentation of the incident, the story is considered by many to be historical fact.

  • Representing History
Representing History The Pianist To Kill A King Why use film? History is currently `in vogue’ with the media. Documentaries cover the five terrestrial channels, historical non-fiction tops the best selling charts and Simon Schama, Michael Wood and David Starkey are now superstar presenters. Time Team and Restoration positively encourage us to take a `hands on’ approach – we can now affect what happens to our heritage directly. Historical films are also as popular as ever, with Pirates of the Caribbean currently topping the UK Box Office (although historians may argue exactly which historical period it is from!) and there are still many costume drama classics that draw in audiences across the world. Films that attempt to show history are sometimes derided by historians and critics for their lack of accuracy and sometimes hilariously bad casting - John Wayne as Genghis Khan anyone? However, if we view historical films as documents to begin an investigation, and if we look at how the film itself works, as well as examining how it purports to tell us about the past, the result can be a rewarding and enjoyable journey. A film can capture a feeling for a time; can create a mood and a picture of the past that perhaps, with further historical research and examination of the other contemporary art forms (drama, literature, painting, music etc.) can make that world come to life. © Film Education 2003 1 Curriculum Links The case study films below have been chosen both for their specific links to historical topics but also because of their filmic interest, either as a new take on a particular subject or an innovative way of telling a story.

Masaryk University Faculty of Education Department of English Language and Literature The Lawmen and the Outlaws of the Old West Bachelor Thesis Brno 2019 Supervisor: Author: Mgr. Zdeněk Janík, M.A., Ph.D. Jan Václavík Václavík, Jan. Strážci zákona a psanci Divokého západu. Bakalářská práce, Masarykova univerzita, 2019. Václavík, Jan. The Lawmen and the Outlaws of the Old West. Bachelor Thesis, Masaryk University, 2019. Anotace Bakalářská práce ‚‚ Strážci zákona a psanci Divokého západu ‘‘ si klade za cíl prozkoumat dějinné okolnosti období Divokého západu a zaznamenat jeho charakteristické znaky. V druhé části se práce zabývá životy strážce zákona Wyatta Earpa a psanců Butche Cassidyho a Sundance Kida a analyzuje o nich natočené filmy. Annotation The bachelor thesis ‘‘The Lawmen and the Outlaws of the Old West’’ aims to explore the historical background of the Old West period and mark its distinctive features. The second segment of the thesis inquires the lives and analyses the movies regarding the famous lawman Wyatt Earp and the outlaws known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The first proposed conclusion is that both a lawman and an outlaw could have unexpectedly recourse their lives on the different side of the law. The last proposed conclusion is the fact that despite the eventual high-quality cinematisation, the audience’s perception of the Old West era can be heavily biased by the myths and inaccuracies the filmmakers have created in traditional western movies.

  • Doc Holliday V2
Cold Open: “I’m your huckleberry.” If you haven’t seen Tombstone you should. Best Western ever. My favorite movie. And my favorite character from that movie is Doc Holliday. And I also thought that Holliday, portrayed by Kilmer, was heavily fictionalized by Hollywood. Turns out, maybe not nearly as much as I thought. John Henry Holiday, better known as Doc Holliday, was a Wild Western anomaly. He was a gambler, drunk, gunslinger, and quite possible a thief - BUT - he also an educated Southern dentist raised by well-to-do plantation owners. He was a complicated and fascinating man who we only know through the descriptions of those who knew him, some of whom liked him and admired him and others who despised and reviled him. This was a really fun story to suck into, so let’s head back to the Wild West - been awhile since we visited - today, on Timesuck. PAUSE TIMESUCK INTRO I. Welcome A. Happy Friday Bonus Suckers! • Slain from Famous Shootout Getting New Epitaphs, by Allen G
Slain from famous shootout getting new Epitaphs, By Allen G. Breed/ The Associated Press This article appeared in the Prescott Courier 5/21/2011 Tombstone, Arizona-Past boot hill graveyard and around the bend where Arizona 80 becomes Fremont Street, a larger than-life statue of a man rises from a low sandstone pedestal, Clad in a duster and a broad-brimmed hat, a sawed-off shotgun over one shoulder, Wyatt Earp stands guard at the entrance to this dusty town that calls itself “too tough to die.” Since the October 26th 1881, “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral,” the famed frontier lawman has loomed large over this former boomtown. The silver deposits that gave birth to the city have long since been played out, but Tombstone has survived largely by mining the legend of the West’s most infamous shootout. And in popular culture, the Earp brothers have always been the good guys; the Mclaury’s and Clanton’s the bad guys. But something peculiar has happened at the O.K. Corral: The white hats and the black hats have all gotten a bit grayer. Hanging on the stucco wall surrounding the little amphitheater where the fusillade is re-enacted daily is a tiny bronze plaque. Unpretentious and easy to miss, it is dedicated, not to the badge-wearing Earp’s or their lunger TB friend Doc Holliday, but to the memory of the brothers Tom and Frank McLaury-two of the men who died that day. Beneath oval portraits of the two is a short, but enigmatic epitaph: “One owes respect to the living, but to the dead, one owes nothing but the truth.” To movie-goers who thought they knew the real story of the O.K.

Occupation Gambler, lawman, saloon keeper, gold/copper miner Years active 1865–1897 Opponent(s) William Brocius, Frank McLaury Spouse Urilla Sutherland (wife) Celia Ann "Mattie" Blaylock (Common-law wife) Josephine Sarah Marcus (Common-law wife) Children none Signature Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (March 19, 1848 – January 13, 1929) was an American gambler, investor, and law enforcement officer who served in several Western frontier towns. He was also at different times a farmer, teamster, bouncer, saloon-keeper, miner and boxing referee. He is best known for his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral along with Doc Holliday and two of his brothers, Virgil Earp and Morgan Earp. During the 30-second gunfight they shot and killed three outlaw cowboys that they had been feuding with for several months. He and his brother Warren were also noted for the vendetta against those they believed were responsible for maiming Virgil and killing Morgan. Although his brother Virgil had far more experience as a sheriff, constable, and marshal,[1] because Wyatt outlived Virgil and due to a creative biography written by Stuart Lake that made Wyatt famous, he has been the subject of and model for a large number of movies, TV shows, biographies and works of fiction. Wyatt's modern-day reputation is that of Old West's "toughest and deadliest gunmen of his day." Wyatt Earp 2 Early life Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth, Illinois, on March 19, 1848, to widower Nicholas Porter Earp and Virginia Ann Cooksey (who were wed on July 30, 1840, in Hartford, Kentucky).
