This paper is an account of Dr Eric Mjöberg’s travels in the northeast Queensland rainforest region, where he went, what observations he made, and what types of Aboriginal material culture items he collected and returned with to Sweden in 1914. Mjöberg, a Swedish entomologist commissioned by the Swedish government to document rainforest fauna and flora, spent seven months in the tropical rainforest region of far north Queensland in 1913, mainly exploring areas around the Atherton Tablelands. -

Phylogenetic analysis of melanotaeniid mtDNA cytochrome b and tRNAPro-control region sequence is broadly consistent with the current taxonomy. However, the molecular phylogeny supports the elevation of M. s. australis to full species status and indicates either that it is a composite species or has introgressed with sym- patric Melanotaenia species. Phenotypically cryptic mtDNA diversity in north-eastern Australia possibly represents an undescribed species. Six major monophyletic clades present in the phylogeny were strongly supported by mor- phological data. The clades represent three biogeographic regions. Fish from northern New Guinea form a mono- phyletic clade, within which Melanotaenia and Glossolepis are polyphyletic. The divergence of this clade from those in southern New Guinea is consistent with the final uplift of the Central Highlands 5 million years BP. North-western New Guinea and associated islands represent another highly divergent, monophyletic clade of a similar age to that in northern New Guinea. The remaining four clades form a monophyletic assemblage restricted to southern New Guinea and Australia: one in northern Australia, one with a disjunct distribution in north-western and eastern Australia, one widespread throughout Australia and southern New Guinea, and one in southern New Guinea with an outlying species in northern Australia. -

A STUDY GUIDE BY KATE RAYNOR SCREEN EDUCATION 1 www.metromagazine.com.au www.theeducationshop.com.au Introduction the early years of the twentieth century, the Illin family fled St Pe- tersburg, Russia, to Australia (they went to South America earlier) to IN escape persecution by the Czar. They settled in far north Queens- land, hoping to find a ‘working man’s paradise’. Calling their new home ‘Little Siberia’, they embarked on the arduous, back-breaking task of clearing the rainforest to make way for dairy farms. Soon the Illins encountered the Ngadjon people, traditional owners of the Atherton Tablelands the Russian immigrants now occupied. Leandro Illin, 28, (pictured top right) son of patriarch Nicholas, became involved with Kitty Clark (pictured bottom right), an Aboriginal woman from the area. They had a child together and Leandro applied to the Protector of Aborigines, J.W. Bleakley, for permission to marry. Permission was denied and the police were dispatched to remove Kitty and her children to a local mission. But Leandro was a man of fierce determination and resolve, and he made every effort possible to protect ‘There must Kitty and their child, and to formally secure their union. Pioneers of Love (Julie Nimmo, 2005) is an epic saga, with the twists and have been turns of Illin family history becoming in some sense symbolic of the vast social upheavals of the twentieth century. Through a powerful personal story, we are a lot of love given insight into the complex social and historical realities of life for immigrants and Indigenous people back in the early days of white settlement. -

Specifically, it examines teaching and learning as an intCTactive process between the participants in the educational enterprise and tiieir particular environments. Guiding the study are ethnogr^hic and narrative ^^proaches which take account of human agency, especially tiie capacity of the northem communities, including teachers, pupils and officials, to interconnect the diversity of their social and economic landscapes with the formal requirements of secular schooling. In the period from 1875 to 1905, primary schooling expanded in numerical terms but was provided unevenly across the colony at both the system and community levels. Disruption was part of the estabUshing process, but the location was as much with families, communities and teachers as with the newly-formed Department of Pubhc Instruction. Where schooling took place was important. -

The Chinese Community in North Queensland
THE CHINESE COMMUNITY IN NORTH QUEENSLAND Ms. C.R. May During the nineteenth century, the Chinese, who for several thousand years had been one of the most geographically Immobile populations in the world, suddenly began migrating to distant countries. This trend can be attributed partly to the parlous condition into which China had fallen owing to the decline of the ruling dynasty. When a dynasty In China deteriorated, as tended to happen every few himdred years. It was said to have lost the "mandate of Heaven", a type of divine right to govern, and thus an opportune moment had arrived for a rival to seize the throne. Indications that this mandate had been forfeited Included official corruption, manifested in extortionate rents and taxes, banditry, the appearance of contenders for the throne and general mlsgovemment which was felt keenly at the local level. Earning a living or growing sufficient food for one's needs became a precarious undertaking and people began to look further afield for a stable means of livelihood. Despite the poor quality of life in China at the time, however, those who migrated usually did so not for their own well-being but in order to Increase the prosperity of their Immediate family and clan. Consequently, money earned overseas was often remitted home to support relatives and the expatriate was expected to return also when his duties overseas were fulfilled. Not all immigrants to Australia were poverty-stricken. Some representatives of wealthy Hong Kong firms also migrated but these were more in the minority. It should be noted that practically all Chinese emigrants came from a relatively small area of South China. -
