REPORT FOR 1890.

Read at Winchester 25th April, 1891.

In presenting their report for the year 1890, the Committee of the Hampshire Field Club desire in the first place to express their sorrow at the loss they have sustained through the death of their esteemed Vice-President, the Rev. Thos. Woodhouse, M.A., Vicar of Ropley. Mr. Woodhouse was one of the five gentlemen who met for the first time on the 20th March, 1885, and founded the Club. Thus identified with us from the first, he always took an active interest in our progress and gave the weight of his ability and experi- ence to our proceedings. Whether as an organiser of excursions, or only present at our meetings, his intelligence and cousel were equally valuable. All who knew Mr. Wood- house will agree that he deserved to bear the grand old name of gentleman, and the members of the Hampshire Field Club will feel that they have lost a friend. The Committee also desire to mention with regret the death of the Rev. Canon Collier, F.S.A., which took place only a short time after he attended, as a visitor, the- annual meeting at Winchester last year. Canon Collier had retired from the Club some time before his death, but was a member, and rendered it good service in its early days. At the first Field meeting of the year, a proposal to limit the number of members of the Club to 250 was carried unanimously, and is likely to prove a wise measure. The Committee have power to elect anyone of special distinction in connection with the work and objects of the Club above XIV. that number. The roll stands at present at 251, and many candidates for membership are waiting for admission. The names of those who are in arrear for their subscriptions, and have not replied to applications made to them, will, therefore, in future, be removed from the list in accordance with Rule 6, and others admitted in their place. Since the last Annual Meeting Part IV. of the Proceedings has been, published. It is a larger number than those previously issued, and completes the first volume. The editor, the Rev. G. W. Minns, has compiled a valuable index, and for this, as well as for the able way in which he has from the beginning fulfilled the office of editor, he merits the best thanks of the Club. A proposal made last autumn to raise the annual subscription to 7s. 6d. did not meet with universal support. The object was solely to meet' the increasing expense of publishing the Proceedings and to provide more and- better illustrations; to this purpose the whole of the increased sum thus raised would have been devoted.1 The usual Conversazione under the joint auspices of the Hampshire Field Club and the Hampshire Literary and ' Philosophical Society, held at the Hartley Institute on the 23rd April, was largely attended, and the annual meeting was held at Winchester on the 29th April. The Committee feel under deep obligation to those who again permitted them to meet in that ancient City, which occupies a central position in the Coutnty, and is generally convenient to members. 1 This augmentation of the subscription was subsequently agreed to at the meeting held at Winchester, when this report was read (April 25th 1891) and was immediately adopted with regard to the admission of new members. On and after January 1st, 1892, the uniform rate of subscription will be 7s. 6d. for all. XV. During 1890 five whole day meetings were held, one after- noon botanical meeting, and one afternoon archaeological meeting in .Southampton. The meetings were as follow:— At East Meon on the 29th May, at Wonston, Stoke Charity and Micheldever on the 2nd July, at Shalfleet and Newtown (Isle of Wight) on the 25th July, at Beaulieu on the 20th August, and at Sherborne St. John, Monk Sherborne and The Vyne on the 25th September. An afternoon botanical meet- ing meeting was held at Chandler's Ford on the 12th June, and the season closed with an archaeological ramble round Southampton on the 23rd October. Special thanks are due to Mr. H. Le Roy Lewis, of Westbury Park, and to Mr. W. Chaloner Chute, of The Vyne—both of whom entertained the members of the Club with great courtesy and liberality. The Committee also desire to express their thank to Mr. W. F. G. Spranger, who kindly provided tea at the King's House, Southampton, on the 23rd October. All the meetings were largely attended and proved of great interest. W.D. H-A-IML^SHIIIE^IE FIELD CLUB. FINANCIAL STATEMENT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31st DECEMBER, 1890.
