The first was also a football letterman, Tom Brookshier, who did NFL color commentary for several years on CBS. Another has made his niche in broadcast- ing, as Dave Logan is the play-by-play voice for the Denver Broncos, following up a stellar career as an NFL receiver. One of the most vis- ible people on the national college football beat is ESPN’s Chris Fowler, a 1985 CU graduate who worked three years in CU’s sports infor- mation office. Another ’80s grad and SID office veteran, Jim Gray, is with FOX after stints with NBC, ABC and ESPN; he’s made a name for himself in breaking several national stories. Solomon Wilcots, who lettered two years at cornerback and played several seasons in the NFL, worked for CBS and ESPN and is now with the NFL Network. Kevin Corke, another CU journalism grad, was an anchor on ESPN after a long career at Denver’s KUSA-TV. Joel Klatt, who set nearly four dozen records as CU’s quarterback between 2003-05 started out locally with ROOT Sports before being snagged by FOX. And the latest is Matt Schick, who is an up and comer and also works college football. Behind the scenes, Peter Lasser was a top producer for TNT’s NFL football coverage, and Jay Rothman is one of ABC’s and ESPN’s most respect- ed producers, having worked college football and is now the producer of Monday Night Football. 339.

University of Minnesota Football Player Overcomes Cancer Four Times to Earn 2019 Disney Spirit Award University of Minnesota Football Player Overcomes Cancer Four Times to Earn 2019 Disney Spirit Award Growing up in St. Paul, MN., Casey O’Brien just wanted to play football and he wasn’t going to let anything stop him – not even four battles with cancer. His relentless pursuit of his athletic dreams and the uplifting hope he has given to countless other cancer patients while playing football for the University of Minnesota has earned him the 2019 Disney Spirit Award. O’Brien was presented with the coveted award – given annually by Disney Sports to college football’s most inspirational player, coach, team or figure – by Disney Sports Vice President Faron Kelley at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12. The awards show, hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Maria Taylor and Tom Rinaldi, was televised live on ESPN from the Chik-fil- A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. “I’m thankful for every day that we get to spend together as a family – the good ones and the bad ones – because I know that tomorrow is never promised,’’ O’Brien said during a speech earlier this year. “All the tests, scans, blood work, chemotherapy, loss of hair and everything else that happens when you fight cancer have been worth it.’’ O’Brien, 20, first encountered cancer as a high school freshman when pain in his left knee was diagnosed as osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

  • Lou Groza National Collegiate Place-Kicker Award
LOU GROZA NATIONAL COLLEGIATE PLACE-KICKER AWARD “STARS OF THE WEEK” 10/31/2011 Chris Boswell Jack Griffin Andre Heidari Rice Florida International Southern California College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week”. This week, the performances of three of the twenty semi-finalists are highlighted. There were few bright spots for the Rice Owls in a Thursday night loss to the University of Houston, but one of them was certainly sophomore kicker Chris Boswell. The Keller, Texas native kicked a career long field goal of 51 yards and added another from 40 yards out as well as 4 PATs in the lopsided 73-34 loss at Houston’s Robertson Stadium. Boswell leads the Owls with 58 points this season, including a career-high 12 field goals in 14 attempts. He has also made all 22 of his extra point attempts. Junior kicker Jack Griffin was the star of Florida International’s 23-20 overtime defeat of Troy University in Miami, Florida on Tuesday night. Griffin kicked a game-tying 20-yarder with 3:31 remaining in regulation, and then booted the game-winner from 22 yards in the extra period. The Naples, Florida native added a 32-yarder earlier in the game for his second consecutive three field goal performance. Griffin leads the Golden Panthers in scoring with 68 points. He is tied for second place nationally with 15 made field goals this season and has not missed an extra point in 23 attempts.
