8 www.BirminghamChristian.com Birmingham Christian Family Healthy Living Fight Mental Decline by Staying Socially Engaged Recent research shows that people who actively use hearing devices have a lower risk of mental decline as they age. They tend to stay more engaged in an active social life. Healthy hearing helps since using proper hearing technology decreases the effort and stress associated with discerning speech. No more tunnel hearing. Until now, traditional hear- ing aids have not been able to process sound quickly enough to help you hear all the way around you. They would focus just on the speech directly in front of you and suppress everything else. You could hear the person you were looking at, but not much else. It wasn’t perfect, but has been the best that hearing aids have been able to do. Now, a revo- lutionary hearing device allows you to hear the way you should –All the way around. The Oticon Opn™ represents a giant leap in hearing device technology. Its processor chip is 50 times faster than anything Oticon has ever built — a quantum leap in speed. That’s fast enough to break out of the tunnel and help you hear in all directions, the way you were born to hear. When Opn unwraps hearing to a full 360 degrees, many amazing things happen. Sounds are adjusted and balanced all around you, not just directly in front of you. Opn separates speech from noise and lets you focus on what is important. Opn works in harmony with your brain to process sounds exceptionally fast, yeilding better speech understanding, less listening fatigue, and better retention of conversations. Opportunity to Learn More. Birmingham Speech and Hearing will premier this exciting new hearing technology at an Oticon Expo Event August 1-4, featuring Oticon Audiologist Mr. Norm Greenleaf. Call 205-871-3878 today for an appoint- ment time to participate in the Expo and find out more about how Oticon Opn could help you enjoy better speech understanding and reduce your listening effort.

10 www.BirminghamChristian.com Birmingham Christian Family Parenting Points We have a similar relationship to God as our Who Owns What? Father. He has given us certain responsibilities and certain realms to take care of. God has placed Practicing Good Stewardship us in families, jobs, and churches and given us particular people to care for. But these things do as Children of God not belong to us, they belong to our Father. Just as We give children chores and jobs around the house to teach responsibility parents give responsibility to their children over and stewardship. A parent will delegate certain things to their children, giving things that are not their own, God grants each of them parts of the house or certain tasks that the child will be responsible us responsibility over things that we do not own. for. A parent may make a child responsible for their room. It is up to her to In Scripture, this kind of responsibility is called clean her room, put her toys away, and make her bed. The child might begin stewardship. The Apostle Paul considered himself to believe the room belongs to her; that she owns it. At Covenant Classical Schools (CCS), we consider ourselves stewards and children of God who have been given responsibilities. We have been entrust- ed with teaching our students they are loved by Christ and what it means to share that love with others. CCS is not our school, it is God’s school. The students are not our students, they are God’s students and he is their primary teacher. May we all be good stewards of the gifts and responsibilities God has entrusted to us.

When you and I pass away and go on to the gates of heaven, what do you think God will be looking for when we meet him face-to-face? Is he going to be looking at what kind of clothes we wore? What our job or career accomplished? How big and nice our home was? How many cars we had in the driveway? Do you think God wants to examine how much money you gave to charitable organizations? Personally, I don’t think any of those things will be his focus. Elbert Hubbard made a statement that really encapsulates what I believe God will be looking for, “God will not look you over for medals, degrees or diplomas, but for scars.” Living in today’s world is tough! If you are a parent, you already know that parenting is a tough business. There will be many times your heart is going to be broken by your child. Some of you reading this right now have already had your spirit crushed. Maybe more than once. Remember, the scars are really medals to show the Lord that you have done the best job you could do in raising your child. The bedrock for child rearing is this – without Jesus Christ, you cannot raise a child to greatness in what really counts. For each one of us, that meeting with the Lord is in front of us. What do you want Him to see when you stand before your creator as He examines your heart? It is never too late to become the best person, mate and parent you can be. Satan wants you to quit and give up, while the Lord speaks into your heart and simply says,”Trust me.”
