Non-performing participants of all ages, music lovers, teachers, students can attend the classes as well as concerts and all other arrangements including taking part in 4-8 hand piano, musical understanding, lectures and dancing. Ollerup is beautifully situated about 2½ hour from Copenhagen. The school has a nice concert hall, well equipped class-rooms and rooms for practising. All bedrooms have a private bath, and the kitchen is first class!. -

THE REDISCOVERY OF PÁL HERMANN by Robert J. Elias For most of music history, the musical hyphenate ‘performer-composer’ was the rule rather than the exception – but the hyphen seems to sit atop a fulcrum, and it tips this way or that over time. Gustav Mahler was known primarily as a conductor in his day. Other than contemporaneous reports of Mahler’s brilliance as a conductor, there is no ‘hard’ evidence – such as recordings – of his performances. By contrast, archival film of Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky on the podium makes clear that their conducting prowess lagged far behind their compositional skills. The tipping point toward specialisation came with the arrival of recorded sound, and was solidified during the era of the long-play recording, from the 1950s onwards. As classical musicians took on the role of celebrities – sometimes reluctantly – record- company executives urged them to nurture their roles as celebrity performers rather than confuse the public with too many versions of their ‘brands’. Before long, the wide availability of recorded music, both historical and contemporary, along with the growing importance and dissemination of critical reviews, also caused many active performer-composers to slip their own original works shyly into a drawer, taking them out only occasionally and, often, only in private settings. Pál (Paul) Hermann was a typical performer-composer of his time. Reviews of his performances suggest that he was a superb cellist during the 1920s and ’30s – a busy chamber musician, with occasional solo opportunities. When he could, he also taught, though maintaining a serious teaching studio required a more stable schedule – and more stable politics – than was ultimately possible. -

Dual Captivity Continued ABSTRACT By the fall of Communism, also the past of Central and Eastern Europe is mostly hold eradicated, albeit it cannot but steadily survive in sublated mentality. On the field of law, this is expressed by the continuity of text-centrism in approach to law, with the law’s application following the law’s letters in a quasi-mechanical way. Consequently, what used to be legal nihilism in the Socialist regime has turned into the law’s textual fetishism in the meantime. This is equal to saying that facing the dilemma of weighing between apparently contradictory ideals within the same Rule of Law, j u s t i c e has in fact been sacrificed to the cert ai n t y in/of the law in the practical working of the judiciary. Especially, constitutional adjudication mostly works for the extension of individual rights while the individuals’ community, the state, is usually blocked in responding challenges in an operative manner. Situation in Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Baltic Republics, as well as Croatia is surveyed through a series of case studies in order to show degrees and variations of worsening. -

Le 7 octobre, le grand Maître du piano chopinien, Eugen Indjic nous offrira dans la Salle des Nations du majestueux et historiques Hôtel des Bergues un récital com - posé exclusivement d’œuvres de Chopin. -

Eugen INDJIC (Piano – France/USA) Eugen Indjic est né en 1947 à Belgrade d’une mère russe et d’un père général de l’armée de Pierre II de Yougoslavie. Il émigre aux Etats-Unis à l’âge de quatre ans et reçoit la nationalité américaine. Il découvre la musique en écoutant la Fantaisie-Impromptu et la Grande Polonaise de Chopin et commence le piano à l’âge de huit ans avec Liubov Stephani et Benjamin Kalman (élève de Emil von Sauer à Berlin). Il monte sur scène pour la première fois à neuf ans, jouant le concerto en ré mineur de Mozart avec le Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Deux ans plus tard, il commence à travailler avec Alexandre Borovsky, célèbre pianiste russe, ami de Prokofiev dans la classe d’Anna Yesipova à Saint- Pétersbourg. Il suivra son enseignement jusqu’en 1964. À onze ans, il joue déjà la Campanella et la 13ème Rhapsodie hongroise de Liszt pour la télévision NBC. Il enregistre à douze ans les Variations Diabelli de Beethoven sur le piano de Rachmaninov pour RCA Victor et donne à treize ans, son premier concert en soliste, jouant le Concerto No.1 de Liszt avec l’Orchestre National Symphonique de Washington, puis le second Concerto de Brahms un an plus tard avec ce même orchestre. Entre 1961 et 1971, il est régulièrement invité par le chef d’orchestre Arthur Fiedler et le Boston Pops Orchestra. Il a seize ans lorsque, au cours d’une tournée avec Borovsky, un critique de Copenhagen écrit de lui : « Il joue Chopin comme un polonais, Debussy comme un Français et Prokofiev comme un maître russe ». -

He started playing the piano at the age of four and at 15 was admitted to the Conservatoire in Ostrava. Masterclasses took him to Paris and elsewhere to study French Suite No. 6 in E Major, BWV 817 Jobann Sebastian Bach with Lazer Berman, Eugen Indjic, Paul Badura-Skoda, Christian Allemande (1685-1750) Zacharias and Walter Groppenberger.
