With our 60th anniversary just behind us, it’s become a regular occurrence for me to meet people bringing their grandchildren here to spend time at a place that looks very close to what they remember from their own childhood visits. It’s a special honor to be part of a place so rooted in people’s memories and in the community. Even after 10 years, I still feel a burst of joy whenever people ask me where I work and then respond with, “Oh, I love Drumlin Farm!” The stories I hear from loyal visitors echo my own memories of coming here as a child and the new memories I share with my own boys, who made their first visits as what our staff fondly refers to as “backpack babies.” Behind the enduring landscape of barns, animals, and New England habitat that have remained intact since those childhood visits, today’s Drumlin Farm is bursting with innovation.     1898 - 1912 1975 - 2021 Welcome! The Orange Country Fair Committee would like to welcome you all back to the fair this year. We have missed you all as we could not hold our annual fair last year. The decision not to hold the fair (the first time since 1975) was an incredibly difficult decision but we had to consider the health and safety of both our volunteers and patrons. The Fair Committee has been working throughout the year trying to make plans for this fall, but this has not been an easy time. As such, the fair may have a slightly different look and feel from previous years. We recognize that the State of Connecticut is emerging from the emergency pandemic status but acknowledge that the pandemic is not over in other areas of the world. We continue to monitor the conditions and will make changes as needed. You are encouraged to wear masks if this will make you more comfortable to participate in our fair. We will continue to promote social distancing where possible. There may be some new traffic flow patterns in the exhibit hall and the animal building to prevent as much crowding in areas. Friday night no one will be able to enter the exhibit hall. All entries will be dropped off at the doors. Pick up plans are still somewhat in flux and will be contingent with state and federal health guidelines. Many of your favorite events are back – doodlebug and tractor pulls, horse and oxen pulls. However, you may not see all of your favorite events this year.

    Luxembourg Pancakes by Vera Blaine When I heard there will be a Pancake Breakfast here at Windsor Gardens on May 19, it reminded me of my childhood when pancakes were a staple of our diet. We frequently had the regular American pancakes but my sister, brother and I practically begged my mother to make Luxembourg pancakes as they were our favorites. My dad did not care much for those so we did not have them often. My mother's family, generations ago, came from Luxembourg, and she used an old family recipe. The pancakes resembled French crepes. They are made with a batter of flour, milk and eggs without the leavening agent, baking powder, as in regular pancakes. A large frying pan is used and the very thin pancake will be the size of a dinner plate. We ate them with sugar and a little cinnamon. I still have her recipe. We also liked the potato pancakes she made and served with homemade syrup. These pancakes have always been a popular German food. Even though my father's great grandparents came from Germany, he was not fond of potato pancakes. We did not have them very often, and the reason may have been that shredding so many potatoes for the batter was quite a chore for my mother. And now, for some trivia, February is Pancake Month. The Tuesday before Lent is Pancake Day and is also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Day is celebrated in Canada, England, Ireland and Australia with a Pancake Race. Each participant carries a pancake in a frying pan and the runners must toss the pancakes as they run and catch them in the frying pan.
