The starting point is the electrostatic potential, which is obtained in any introductory course of electromagnetism from the Coulomb potential and the superposition principle for any charge distribution. The necessity to develop solutions to the Laplace and Poisson differential equations is also recognized, identifying the Coulomb potential as the generating function of harmonic functions. Correspondingly, the convenience of expressing the electrostatic potential in terms of its multipole expansion in spherical coordinates, or as integral transforms based on harmonic functions in different coordinate systems, is also established. These connections provide a motivation for teachers and students to acquire the necessary mathematics as a basic tool in the study of electromagnetic theory, optics and quantum mechanics. Variations of these concepts have also been made over the years such as the discrete exterior calculus and the finite element exterior calculus. In this work, motivated by the recent studies of nonlocal vector calculus we develop a nonlocal exterior calculus framework on Riemannian manifolds which mimics many properties of the standard (local/smooth) exterior calculus. However the key difference is that nonlocal \interactions" (functions, operators, fields,...) are not required to be smooth. Also any point/particle can interact directly with any other point/particle in the studied domain (at least in principle). Just as in the standard context, we introduce all necessary elements of exterior calculus such as forms, vector fields, exterior derivatives, etc. We point out the relationships between these elements with the known ones in (local) exterior calcu- lus, discrete exterior calculus, etc.

These lecture notes contain, in a slightly expanded form, the material presented at the Summer School in Differential Geometry held in January 2012 in the Universidade Federal do Cear´a-UFC, Fortaleza. The course aims at giving an overview of some Lp-extensions of the classical divergence theorem to non-compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary. The red wire connecting all these extensions is represented by the notion of parabolicity with respect to the p-Laplace operator. It is a non-linear differential operator which is naturally related to the p-energy of maps and, therefore, to Lp-integrability properties of vector fields. [5] for triangular meshes to topological border of subsets of n Z . The core of the method relies on first-order estimation of measures associated with our discrete elements (such as length, area etc.). We show strong consistency (i.e. pointwise convergence) of the operator and compare it against various other discretizations.

    Proceedings of Symposia in Applied Mathematics Discrete Laplace Operators Max Wardetzky In this chapter1 we review some important properties of Laplacians, smooth and discrete. We place special emphasis on a unified framework for treating smooth Laplacians on Riemannian manifolds alongside discrete Laplacians on graphs and simplicial manifolds. We cast this framework into the language of linear algebra, with the intent to make this topic as accessible as possible. We combine perspectives from smooth geometry, discrete geometry, spectral analysis, machine learning, numerical analysis, and geometry processing within this unified framework. 1. Introduction The Laplacian is perhaps the prototypical differential operator for various physical phenomena. It describes, for example, heat diffusion, wave propagation, steady state fluid flow, and it is key to the Schr¨odinger equation in quantum mechanics.     MEAN VALUE THEOREMS FOR RIEMANNIAN MANIFOLDS VIA THE OBSTACLE PROBLEM BRIAN BENSON, IVAN BLANK, AND JEREMY LECRONE Abstract. We develop some of the basic theory for the obstacle problem on Riemann- ian Manifolds, and we use it to establish a mean value theorem. Our mean value theorem works for a very wide class of Riemannian manifolds and has no weights at all within the integral. 1. Introduction The mean value theorem (MVT) is a fundamental tool in the analysis of harmonic functions and elliptic PDEs. Recalling the elementary setting of harmonic functions in Euclidean space, the MVT states that the value of a harmonic function at a point can be exactly recovered by taking the average value of the function over any sphere, or ball, centered at the point of interest (i.e. the mean value property holds for all harmonic functions). More generally, if the function is sub{ (or super{) harmonic, the MVT states that the integral average of the function over a sphere gives an under{ (or over{) estimate for the value of the function at the center; see for instance [10, Theorem 2.1]. In this setting, where the MVT becomes an inequality, one considers whether or not integral averages are suitably monotone (as a function of sphere radius) and whether the value of the function can be recovered from a limiting process. The importance of the MVT for the theory of harmonic functions and elliptic PDEs is readily apparent, as a fundamental tool in proving both the weak and strong maximum principle, the Harnack inequality, and a priori estimates.
