About the collection: The Philomathean Society, founded in 1856, was the first student organization at Carroll. The importance of student organizations to student life has only grown over the decades with dozens of groups in existence today. This collection contains the meeting minutes, scrapbooks, and documents of many groups that have come and gone at Carroll and helped define its history. Notes: This collection is arranged into series: General Series (1926-1996): This series contains materials published by the Office of Student Activities regarding all organizations. Fraternity and Sorority Series (1910s-2013): Fraternities and Sororities have been an important part of Carroll student life since the early twentieth century. This series contains a wide variety of materials from all the different greed societies that have existed at Carroll; some of these materials include documents about the founding of the chapters, meeting minutes, scrapbooks, and correspondence between the chapters and the administration. The Independents Series (1948-1977): During the height of Greek life’s popularity (from about the 1940s to the 60s), the small number of students not in a fraternity or a sorority joined together and called themselves the Independents. This series contains meeting minutes, scrapbooks, and programs from events. Honorary Societies Series (1917-2010): Honorary Societies invited students who excelled in specific areas of academics or performance to join them. This series contains various society charters, meetings minutes, and publications. Interest Groups Series (1854-1991): The most numerous and diverse type of campus group, Interest Groups are clubs founded by students with a shared interest or goal. The very first campus group, The Philomathean Society, falls into this category. This series contains meeting minutes, publications, posters, and event programs. Waukesha, WI. Acquisition Information: The objects in the Student Organizations Collection come from various donors, usually the organization itself or the relative of one of their members. Donors to this collection include: Billy and Dorothy Oakes, Eunice Hoffman Fisher, E. Ben Winke, Ruth Nehs, Sigma Delta Nu Sorority, the Delta Zeta Sorority, and the Alpha Kappa Psi sorority.
